Disappointment I would say taking into account the age of this malt. The nose is really pleasant and promising but the taste… I’ve got a feeling that they soaked into the cask cereals together with their packaging. Well, it’s drinkable and even somewhat pleasant whisky but a quarter of century maturation just went down the drain.
    • Nose
Light and sherried, a bit earthy, yellow ripe apples and banana touch, honey, candied orange zest, raisins
    • Taste
Sweet, slightly oaky, chemical and some metallic notes, cereal, cardboard, oatmeal
    • Finish
Short, getting dry after a while, nutty, a bit malty and sweet

Big age statement, low expectations. With artificial colorant and measly 40% ABV, the presentation of this Tomintoul illustrates that old habits die hard. That said, the nose opens up beautifully, showcasing persimmon, chamomile and a dash of pepper. After a sweet soda pop arrival, the palate is hit by an avalanche of spices, overshadowing sour fruits, coconut and floral notes. The oak keeps the upper hand into the dry and tannin-rich finish, giving away the impact of mediocre casks. I have mixed feelings, this whisky appears to be a bit beyond its peak.

[May, 2017]  When I am on the road in Scotland I usually do some re-tasting of standard whisky releases using miniature bottles.   This miniature was bottled on February 28th, 2014.

The colour is pale straw and the texture shows a few fast legs and late fat tears.  The nose offers a delicate sweet profile with some nice OBFs (lacquer paint).  The mouthfeel is smooth and mellow with no hot moments.  It coats just the tongue (what is nevertheless better that no coating at all).  The taste again is vanilla sweet and mellow with some hints of different fruits.  The finish is of medium length.

A delicious dram with no spikes and no flaws - just a nice malt to sip and enjoy (and to forget about taking notes of it)...

Smooth edged, easy to drink whisky. Not the kind of whisky you will remember.
    • Nose
Fruity fresh. Green apples. Orange peel. Some recently cut gras. Very gentle.
    • Taste
Smooth start. Buttery, oily. Butterscotch candy. Then a spicy oakiness. Not that complex, but very enjoyable.
    • Finish
      Medium long, malty finish.

    • Nose
Very light and reserved. Yellow apple with a hint of marzipan. Some hay.
    • Taste
Soft. Slightly grassy sweetness with a subtle nuttiness. Rather short.
