  1. ffmdino did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

a solid malt, but a bit simple for a 21y
    would have expected more
    • Nose
Vanilla, more earthy, nutty, slightly rubbery, a little more caramel, malt no longer young, banana with honey, oak older with polish, slightly spicy, somewhat solvent, late fruity dark tart

from the 1920s: very earthy decreases, raspberry, vanilla toffee mix, dusty increases, dark fruity, dark sugar, a musty note
    • Taste
      soft and round
Wholemeal waffle with maple or sugar syrup, malt older, oak increases, spicy, slightly bitter, late dark caramel
    • Finish
      medium to long
Oak, spicy, warm, bitter, late dark toffee

    Blind Tasting: February 2021
    • Nose
      91 91
Full of mature pears! Citrus and foam bananas. Very floral, with newly cut grass. Wow!
    • Taste
      90 90
Floral, with a lot of mature pears, heather, vanilla and some oak wood. The citrus is there, but not as present as on the nose.
    • Finish
      85 85
A little too short, but comfortable. Needed a bit more alcohol. Floral honey, some vanilla and cedar wood.

My favourite out of their standard line up. Good strength on the palate, which is not a common trait for standard OB.

A really nice whisky to drink. Relatively fresh and lively for its 21 years. I liked it, but there won't be a large bottle for the current 160 € or more.
    • Nose
Sugar beet. Honeycomb. Orange oil. Candied citrus fruits. Cocoa butter. Some molasses. Wood sugar. Grassy and somewhat floral notes. Suggested elderflower. A little thyme. Tree sap.
    • Taste
Glucose. A little persimmon. Sea buckthorn. Tree sap again. The grassy and floral notes are a little drier now. Also meadow herbs. Now it will be more sour and citrus fruits. In addition a little wax.
    • Finish
Hay. Grapefruit. Rather fresh and juicy wood tones. It's getting drier.

  8. YD84 scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Grass, burnt sugar, tropical fruits, melon, citrus, spices, honey, shortbread. Slightly savoury. A slight vegetal note on the palate (none on the nose) which subsides with water. The nose is absolutely beautiful, but the palate doesn't quite live up. Still a very good whisky.

The translucent golden color is like the morning sunlight through the leaves.
    • Nose
      92 92
The faint bourbon floral fragrance with the aroma of grass, a touch of chocolate, citrus, tannin, and marzipan. Overall, it is softer, more stable and complex than in 18 years, and the pungent feeling of alcohol is weaker.
    • Taste
      91 91
At the moment I entered the entrance, I fumbled, it was so complicated and distinct. The taste is layered on the tongue layer by layer, honey, sweet citrus, tannin, light spices, spicy flavor, and the fusion is so perfect and comical. Every churning of your tongue brings about a comfortable change, making you a little bit reluctant to swallow.
    • Finish
      89 89
Long, slow harvest, and finally with youthful youthfulness and tenderness

  10. Marcel74 scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

It takes some time to open, the nose is amazing
    • Nose
Barley sugars, fresh, flowers and heather, sour apples, vanilla pudding,
    • Taste
Vanilla, a bit thin in the taste, sweet, and tropical fruit, banana mango apples chewing gum vanilla..

Edit: after an hour the flavors are much fuller and spicier and it comes into its own much more.. the flavor layers really come out..
    • Finish
Sweet with a pepper but relatively short in the beginning, after an hour in the glass and after a few sips it develops like a mature whisky and the aftertaste lasts for a long time.

  11. Gråmantel scored this whisky 81 points Expert Senior

I had 3 miniature bottles with Aultmore so I opened them all and compared them because I have never tried anything from this Speyside distillery before. 12y, 18yo and 21yo Foggie Moss. A small simple clumsy test in peace and quiet.
    • Nose
The 12 year old is very citrus in the scent. Grapefruit. Grassy. Honey. No peat here but there are a lot of floral and light herbal scents. I get minerality. A little cask influence but not much.

The 18-year-old is immediately more chocolatey, nuttier and 'darker'. More woodspice. Dried hay. More earthy than the 12th. Sweet woodspice.

The 21-year-old was surprisingly grassy and alert. Cucumber water? After a while comes a difficult sweetness that I find in the 12th but not in the 18th, although here in the 21st it is more noticeable. Bärté.
    • Taste
The 12-year-old has a grassy honey combo in the taste. Not even whisky screaming out flavors. With a little water, I experience it sweeter. A little vanilla from the barrel.

The 18-year-old has a slower pace, it takes time to make himself known. Sherry sweetness but definitely no bomb. Oily mouthfeel. Spicy.

The 21-year-old tastes younger than 21, a little pinched on the tongue. This one is also oily like the two younger editions.
    • Finish
The 12-year-old's oiliness remains with a fresh sweet aftertaste. Vanilla. Medium but not as long as 18. A little bitterness at the back of the tongue. Good balance.

The 18-year-old is relatively dry in the aftertaste but it has a good spiciness that I like. Medium.

The 21-year-old I expected a more impressive finish but it is no longer than the 18-year-old. Not bad but a little too easy to forget. The 21 is more like the 12 here as well as in many other aspects. The 18-year-old is the one who stands out from them.

      12 - 83p
      18 - 86p
      21 - 81p

    • Taste

Continuing from the nose, mostly floral notes.
    • Finish

Similar to the 18, I find this one a little undervalued here. Great flavors and nicely balanced.
    • Nose
      88 88
fruity, sweet, summery fresh, honey with lemon zest and fresh hay, plus malt with vanilla and caramel, which brings with it a kind of sweetness reminiscent of coconut (something different), a few herbs such as lavender / rosemary,
    • Taste
      88 88
Here, too, the fruit component is the first to stand out, juicy fresh oranges, plums and apricots, slightly acidic accompanied by the lemon / grapefruit, vanilla comes with a slightly chili-spicy oak note. Spicy-malty, everything always framed by a herb and spice note typical of Aultmore.
    • Finish
      87 87
medium-long finish, slightly bitter with milk chocolate and sweet caramel,

Interesting nose, taste a bit monotonous. The finish remains in the mouth as a light note ...
    • Nose
      89 89
Very spicy. A lot of carnation with a sweetness that rounds off the nose. No sugar sweetness, rather agave syrup. Something juniper in the back. Maggi?
    • Taste
      86 86
Malty, vanilla, cereals. Not a sweetie. Grassy. Slightly bitter.
    • Finish
      87 87
Enjoyable. Vanilla and wood notes remain a bit ...

Unexpectedly easy-to-drink, you can drink it effortlessly and make people feel very happy without any burden. If it is not a certain barrel taste, it is impossible to speculate that it is 21 years of wine. All kinds of flavors are very clear, and there is no messy flavor, just like crafts that have been carefully polished.
    • Nose
      Fruity, flowers and spicy.
    • Taste
Jam, wooden barrel, blueberry or citrus flavored cheese.
    • Finish
      general.

  20. de Geest scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

Has a spring-like appearance in open wooded surroundings. With one sweetie.

Sharp edge, after which soft, greasy and fruity.

    Subtle yet rich aftertaste

Young nose, spicy / sweet taste and bitter finish. Billowy. Price is not too friendly, however it's an interesting drink.
    • Nose
Fresh and floral. Vanilla, honey, citruses, oak and yellow fruits. Touch of grass.
    • Taste
Powerful and oily. Big oak with vanilla. Spices: pepper, ginger and nutmeg. Mixed fruit jam and citruses.
    • Finish
      Medium length, bittersweet.

Solid, well made and balanced, the Aultmore 21 year old is probably not going to win any awards for complexity, but is entirely pleasant nonethless. It's also fairly expensive, clocking at at £175 at an airport near you. At that price, unfortunately I really can't recommend it as a bottle purchase - however, if you get a chance to try a dram somewhere it's certainly worth 20 minutes of your time.

    [Sample]

N: Classic Speyside nose with good oak showing. Its a fruity/jammy nose with earthy/plant notes.
T: Fruity and jammy just as on the nose which has a good balance turning to a grain led finish
F: Wonderful 'heart of the kernel' stuff with a waxy, fresh finish.
C: Excellently integrated and open but i struggle to justify its £120 price tag [Mar ’15]

    Scores a B

  28. MaltMartin scored this whisky 81 points Connoisseur

I like the nose, but the palate is a little thin to my taste. The finish is too bitter. I would have expected more depth in a 21 yo whisky.
    • Nose
Unexpectedly fresh and grassy for a 21 year old. Lemon curd. A bit honey. Lavender and heather. Flowery notes of freesias as well.
    • Taste
Toasted oak with a peppery punch. Followed by vanilla and ginger. Cedar wood at the background. The influence of the bourbon casks is clear, but it lacks character in my view..
    • Finish
Not that long. A lot of bitterness. Stuffed peppers and nutmeg. Liquorice

The Aultmore 21 is, sadly, a boring whisky, paling near the 12 year old....
