Whisky Reviews for Caol Ila 1984 RS

6 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 87.62 points

Very peaty and fresh for a 30-year old, and not very complex. Not bad, but not my style and too immature for a 30-year old.
    • Nose
Lemony peat, vanilla, acetone, some tropical fruits (kiwi maybe), and almonds.
    • Taste
Sweet vanilla, sweet rum flavour (banana?), peat and some oak.
    • Finish
Lingering vegetal peat, some bitterness, no hint of the rum.

  2. MrRancho scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

Excellent! Very easy-going, interesting and entertaining (!). Amazingly cute. The smoke is only present at the beginning and then goes behind the other flavors. But I can not find the rum.
    • Nose
smoky, greasy, hay, kitchen herbs, cotton candy, some marshmellows. After a while (possibly by air and hand warmth) acacia honey and citrus peel.
    • Taste
Syrup, lemon, smoke, milk chocolate, some oak (but hardly noticeable), honey
    • Finish
Medium long, sweet, salty, slightly woody bitter

This is still very fresh on the palate, a bit too fresh and uninspired to be honest, but the palate packs a smoky, sweet, citrus-laden punch. I also did not notice the Rum cask finish at all (I tasted a sample without any info on the label).

Notes By Riegger .. Caol Ila 30yo 1984-2014 Riegger's Selection Ripe, soft and smoky! The three keywords that best describe the whole thing.

Nose: rich smoke, some peat, reminiscent of fresh sea air, downright maritime, straight grain, even slightly sweet behind the Rauchfasade. All in all, very complex.

Palate: at first very soft and round, the smoky note shows itself only gently and comes to its best advantage after swallowing. Slight saltiness, fine wood smoke, reminiscent of barbecue.
Then some white chocolate with pepper.
The 56% are barely palatable, very round, only on the tongue you can tell the cask strength.
After a while, flavors of caramel and vanilla appear. Very complex.

With a little water: the smoky note remains perfectly preserved, on the palate it is almost a flatterer.
Looks almost fruity and sweet behind the smoke.

Quite a special Caol Ila with a weird combo of sweet/ savoury taste. When I got a dram of this and wrote my findings I was at a restaurant. Perhaps the reason for all these food notes.
    • Nose
Quite different from what I expect from a Caol Ila. Lampoil, diesel engine, wind from the sea. Turns sweeter into beef teriyaki with lots of sauce.
    • Taste
Sweet, weird and salty. Liquorice, leather and rubber. Salty bacon and spinach from that weird industrial/ diesel note. Sultanas.
    • Finish
Industrial smoke and a sweet savoury honeyed ham.
