    A very good whisky!

Maybe Armin Fuchs and I would not have directly guessed that this is a Japanese Whisky at first - it could as well be some Island-Scotch.

It is very clear, very pure and a real solid character!

It is a quite light and smooth Whisky but with very powerful aromas at the same time.

Interesting: Distilled in 2000 - the Sherry cask (obviously refill (!)) offers all the classic aromas which Armin Fuchs and I love about great matured Whiskies.

We do not get this level of quality from today's Scotch Whiskies ...

Why is that? Casks like this should be available, we think!

No false notes, old and classic aromas (only 14 years old), great wood-quality.

So many 'modern' Japanese Whiskies are timeless in quality.

... but for us really almost all of the 'modern' Scotch Whiskies are just 'modern' ... only a few exceptions we met ...

Tasting with Armin Fuchs in January 2016.
    • Nose
      Real complexity!

French dressing (with salt, pepper, fine oil and vinegar), smoked things, bacon, caramel and later caramel-chocolate.

There is a wonderful light citrus note throughout (lemon).

Citrus-raddish-malt, plum pralines, wet rocks in the background.

Lemon smoke and an old fruit sweetness.

More salt, motor oil - scouring powder, service station with new tires, seaweed, old upholster furniture, sour apples and grassy-mossy-resinous notes.

After swinging the glass the first time:

Smoky, more seaweed at first, brine, honey and spicy wood. Then comes a wonderful BBQ: Marinade of cloves, orange peel, soft vinegar, pepper, marjoram and savory - all put on smoked meat. There is some lemon sorbet in the background ...

Developing with smoked molten dark chocolate.

Oranges, chocolate covered raisins, dried figs, a light broth and also the sea air.

Later some barley and hay in the shed and a very special mackerel inlaid in oil (from the tin). Finally also hints of peat.

And everything in balance and complete roundness!
    • Taste
      Very drinkable without water.

Sherry cask, wood and smoke, coal and some ashes, a lot of citrus (e.g. lemon juice, lemon peel, orange peel), tartness.

Many herbs, scouring powder, chocolate covered raisins, sweet and smoky malt, earthy grassiness and an old (!) vanilla - peeling itself right out of the old (!) Sherry cask.

... in the distance is cooling a classic fish soup at the beach, everybody is sitting in the warm sand, breathing the salty air from the sea ...

On the other hand at the same time is a strawberry-rum-jam, also pure rum and other fruits pickled in rum as well as boiling red fruits.

Later again the mackerel, more 'beach', old furniture + upholstery and hints of some flowers very subtle in the background.

A culinary experience - an excellent aperitif!
    • Finish
Soft and mellow (but not short) finish.

Old Sherry cask, dark chocolate with coal and smoke, hints of peat, dark and slightly sweet malt with leather and heavy red wine.

      The spiciness is very pleasant.

'Nockerln', cooked potatoes, appetizing, salt, again the sea air, old wardrobe, some mint. Slightly dry and very atmospheric!

Hints of dark beer and beef roulades.

      Very round.

    What a gem!

What a noble Japanese 'Islay' Whisky!

    Very satisfying, honest and rich.
    • Nose
      Fruit sweetness, peat, cherry jam, warm plum compote, smoke of wood and coal, coal cellar, marmalade, play of smoked ham with chocolate and salt, noble old furniture, burnt meat, roasts stain (sour-sweet), from time to time flows caramel through the dense aromas, leather (tart, and also imbued with alcohol), decomposing lemons, peated smokey lemon juice;

      bread, tart leather;

hints of oatmeal gruel, Minestrone and gooseberries.
    • Taste
      Extremely oily!

Spiciness of wood, herbs, spices, Fruit sweetness (cherries, plums, oranges, grapes), citrus, peat, woodsmoke, salt, leather, sugar sweetness (!), bacon, burnt dark cake, hints of cocoa, bright jams (also marmalade), apple jelly.
    • Finish
Wood smoke, peat, fruits: cherries, oranges, grain, green vegetables and salad, meat, salt, leather, sweetness, cherry brandy, raspberry brandy, bread crust, old wardrobe, cocoa powder, grass, burnt cake, some wood.

Not as funky as some other Hanyus but it is good. With a balanced, thick, heavy mouthfeel, wonderful aromas and almost oily springbank-like palate, and that nice funk permeating throughout, I am scoring this very highly. Didn't win the "right" to buy this bottle. This is from a purchased sample.

N: Rather light & subtle distillate supported by sympathetic oak. Notes on varied fruits, soy and shoe polish to name but a few.
T: Curious and exotic herbal malt.
F: Herbal oak, popcorn and flapjack.
C: What an excellent & distinctive cask. Blog
