N: Its not easily penetrable but I’ve a feeling I'm going to like this, lets see. Initially sweet corn and it’s grain like - bready like a loaf with some wood varnish. Overall its a gentle, sweet, boozy nose with a soft-blanket freshness, pineapple, mango and spices. Rather clear cut.
T: I thought this would be hot or harsh, but not a bit of it. If you're quick you can detect pineapple cubes from the young spirit on arrival. Develops on popcorn, [non-salted] potato crisps and young oak which mellows rapidly to a waxy buttered corn. Is this rye, or corn?
F: Some freshness lingers before the fundamentals settle in, namely vanilla, corn, fudge and caramel. Simple as.
C: If you want caramel-covered popcorn in a glass - here it is. This dutch rye is entitled 'Smile' and i can see why. Scoring wise it has limited complexity overall and a fairly uneventful nose, but the overall result is fundamentally and simply delightful. See if you don't want another dram after. Go, the Dutch!
