BLINDVERKOSTUNG

Nose

Sweet and salty peat of course, but unlike with other young Islay Malts it doesn't cover up any signs of immaturity with thick smoke. It's certainly a young Malt, but the distillery character shines through the peat with a lively fruitiness of pears, not-too-ripe melon, tangerine, orange zests, bananas and a dash of lime juice. After a while bbq'ed pineapple come to the front, always accompanied by sea salt, ozone, seaweed and smoke. Some minerality and a distinct yeastiness like in a bone-dry white wine in the background. Very nice nose. A heavily peated Laddie Ten, anyone?

Taste

The attack and development on the palate are perfect. No need to add water, it couldn't possibly improve anything (although a few drops don't hurt). Sweet and spicy attack on melon, lime leaves, salty seaweed and maybe a little oyster juice, garnished with a little chilli and surrounded by light, but pungy smoke. In the middle a nice grassiness appears together with a touch of vanilla. It's a light whisky, but not a simple one. I love the touches of pineapple and melon that were apparent in the nose and that reappear in the background. Delicious.

Finish

Long, with more maritime pleasures, sea salt, sweet juicy peat and some citrus.

Comments

I think this is a bit underappreciated here on WB regarding its rating. It's a crystal-clean, dry and engaging expression of a heavily peated young Islay Malt, but it's really different from any Southern Shore Islay you'll come across; it lacks the medicinal, tarry and barbeque-y flavors, but you won't miss anything. The light and fruity Bruichladdich character shines and sparkles through, and that's what makes this whisky special. I really think it's a great one.

Nose

Bacon, leichter Rauch, angenehm malzig und überraschend frisch.

Taste

Nose: a very malty nose on entry until the phenols kick in. Then we get tar smoke and copious amounts of ash with gasoline and some eucalyptus. It’s not as fierce and deep as the Octomore Islay barley I’ve reviewed recently.

Palate: certainly an oily mouth feel, with a lot of ash, leather and soot , pepper and bitter oak with a hint of kippers and sea salt as well as mocha.

Finish: bitter chocolate on top of smoky ashy burnt toast. Dry.

Conclusion:

A very decent pc. Though I’ve had better older PCs (for example the PC11 OB). If you compare it to the Octomore Islay Barley, it’s much more affordable, but It’s not as fierce and complex as it’s bigger peatier brother. I think if you calculate the BFYB factor you get a wonderful malt for 1/3 the price as the Octomore, which is hard to beat.
