Man oh man! 10 years with some quality barley can really showcase what Arran is all about. The sweets take first place in this dram, but as it develops in the glass more and more tropical fruits. The twinges of oak and tannin play in the finish with some alcohol heat making for a quite rewarding dram!
    • Nose
      88 88
Vanilla pudding and white cedar chests. Fresh lumber and bakery notes. Biscuits and sweet cardamom syrup with citrus in there too. They typical Arran tropical fruit begins to muddle its way up as it opens, coconut and mango pudding with some more stone fruits (peach or yellow plum)
    • Taste
      87 87
The palate is very light, sweet stone fruits and clementine syrup. More bakery notes, muffins or sweet cakes, something along that line. Rich syrup note and sweet barley grist in the bottom with bay leaf for sharpness.
    • Finish
      83 83
Medium-Short; more on the shorter side. The vanilla takes hold and mingles with oak shavings and spice cake. White tea leaves and harsh tannins mingle with something like cooked spinach and more of the bay leaf note. Really quite someting fro 10 years!

A malty whisky as used to be common in Scotland. I think he's great.

    • Nose
Sweet-but-sharp, slightly bitter, dusty, citric, fizzy.

With water, the sharpness mellows, becoming earthy with wet leaves
    • Taste
Creamy, mainly sweet but with a nice sour note to balance.

With water: swims very well, notable scotch mist, sour apples and bananas, chalky and bright
    • Finish
Medium, sharp at first but mellows to sweet, vanilla, chocolate emerges late on

  12. Vladimir Ziryanov scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

First of all, a catchy drink, yes, there aren’t any very light shades, but it’s powerful, assertive, varied and pleasant
    • Nose
      91 91
initially some dark notes (even remotely even sherry extract seems strange), strong tea leaves, later turning into menthol-pepper tones, the degree is felt, presses, but does not bother, some dark fruits like cherries and cherries, and again black tea with green leaves tobacco
    • Taste
      90 90
the same profile, but additionally light fruit skips
    • Finish
      90 90
bright, long-lasting, spicy, juicy, alcohol pleasantly irritates the receptors, causing them to swallow saliva and arouse appetite :)

    Balance (22)
Awesome molt! Not likely for his age (90)
    • Nose
Vanilla, unripe melon, peanuts, sponge cake from the fridge, wax pear, dry wood, duchess ... apple shampoo on violet petals, pineapple. Bright aroma, juicy ... after standing up fruit jelly and a little citrus on the farm (23)
    • Taste
Fatty, oily, spicy, fruit and chocolate (23)
    • Finish
Spicy, oily finish. Notes of acetone and fruit, vanilla and creamy ice cream, menthol ... wood and a hint of smoke, chocolate crumb with cucumber skin (22)

It's all about pure malt here which drives me crazy about that Arran!
    Brilliant job!

  18. Marko_I did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

At the first sip (only) a yummy-keksig-robust cereal whisky, if you just a little further sniffs into it and it's then with the citrus, green herb and herb notes really interesting, for around 50-60 € was then 'ne great bottle.
    • Nose
Cereal, a little vanilla & banana, a bit of hay and dry herbs, a touch of white pepper ... not too hot or closed, but I have the impression that could help a drop of water: on the one hand creamy, vanilla, white chocolate, on the other hand but also for a short time sharper, the white pepper is more intense, a splash of lemon is added ... then it's green again, melon peel, fresh green beans, hay
    • Taste
crispy, biscuit, grainy ... shortbread, vanilla kipper, a little honey, browned toast, with white pepper again, with water shimmering slightly bitter bitter citrus notes, grapefruit, lime, and cucumber / melon peel
    • Finish
long, warm, dry, somehow light and spicy, the white pepper and the corn sound, the bitter citrus notes are still there

  19. Torfding scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
less malty than expected, but the aroma is present; freshly cut grass with a little chives, slightly sweetish, vanilla, pear and other bright juicy fruits, yellow apples; Over time, the chives give way and make room for even more apple
    • Taste
light apples and weeping fruits (especially light), spicy, some oak and a hint of tea
    • Finish
medium length with an eternally long reverberation on the tongue; malty, spicy and strong, warming, the fruit notes are also here, a little salty and chocolaty

N: Fresh fruity! Aromatich but not alcoholic. Next to the fruity there's a grassy touch, like mown wet grass. Not too sweet but mainly the freshness dominates.

T: The taste doesn't keep up with the nose. Water improves it a bit, but still not on par... The tastes are in the same line as the nose.

    F: Short, clean and dry.

C: Not spectacular. The nose is very promising, if only the palette and finish could keep on par... Tastes like too much water was added, only there’s still the alcoholic kick. I won't buy a bottle...

Tasted during a blind tasting competition in June 2015. I scored on the low side because it tasted "off", in my opinion. When the bottle was revealed it became clear to me that was due to the bere barley.
    • Nose
Straf, droog, beetje zweetsok, gekookte andijvie, rabarber. Later ook grastonen.
    • Taste

  28. pilgrim77 scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

Aromas of cereals and freshly baked bread initially dominate the nose, but a bit of patience allows fruity notes (zesty citrus fruits and sweet berries) and honeyed vanilla to come through. A drop of water accentuated the lovely baking aromas and added some vibrant grassy/herbal notes to the mix. Rather old school on the palate, with plenty of peppery spice alongside something more industrial (oily and metallic). Reminds me a bit of some older Lochsides I tried a while back! A slightly bitter edge announces the finish (a hint of young-ish spirit?), which isn't as long as I would have hoped. Certainly unique, and with a profile distinct from the standard Arran range.

Blind tasting of a sample. A fresh, natural profile.
    • Nose
Apple, cereals, grapefruit, banana, vanilla, peach, caramel, limestone and fig. With water more lime and a little honey and strawberry.
    • Taste
Peaches on syrup, apple, cereals grapefruit, straw, lemon, vanilla, caramel, strawberry, fig, honey and white pepper. Something slightly fishy. With water some orange.
    • Finish
Wild peach, apple,  grain, caramel, honey and almond. A bit too short.

Tasty at the Whisky Festival 2015.
    • Nose
Without hay-grass honey, vanilla malt, crispness, cereals, citruses, chlorophyll-evoking smells, freshly cut grass.
With water, it loses its grains, smoothes, tans. (87 b)
    • Taste
The exact reflection of what smells in the fragrance is all about dryness and wood. With water, the impression is sweeter, the dryness only sounds when it is soft. (87 b)

  37. Falnor scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Lots and lots of cornflakes, bread, biscuit and other 'grainy' stuff. Sweetness from honey and frosties. Very creamy, vanilla and oil.

    Excellent malt. Very different indeed.

Tasted with Whiskyclub Spakenburg on 24th of January 2015
    • Nose
Sweet and deeply malty! Peach, banana, shoe polish (really?) fresh bread crust and a heap of vanilla.
    • Taste
Very heavy arrival. There's lots of aroma's very densely packed. Mostly sweet, ripe fruit but coated with this heavy malty layer. Oatmeal cookies!
    • Finish
Good, long, malty finish. Ends in a nice, satisfying bitter.

  39. Erik Elixir scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Tasted with Whiskyclub Spakenburg Around Scotland - Island hopping 01-2015
    • Nose
spices - pepper, fruity - bourbon fruits, some floral notes, leather, citus - lemon and honey

I was expecting more 'organic' and malty notes
    • Taste
fruity - wine gums, citrus - lemon, pepper and grains - cookies
    • Finish
medium drying with spices - pepper, fruity and bitter fruits

This Single Malt Scotch whisky was produced in 2004 as a collaboration between the Agronomy Institute of Orkney College (University of the Highland & Islands) and the Isle of Arran Distillery. It has been matured for over 8 years in American oak barrels and bottled at 46% without chill-filtration or the addition of artificial colouring and the Isle of Arran Distillery. Limited edition of 5,800 bottles.Tasting Notes by Arran
    • Nose
Malty and herbal initially with hints of vanilla and freshly cut hay. A veritable hedgerow of aromas is at play whilst honey and sweet fruits emerge with a dash of water against a back-drop of rich, toasted oak.
    • Taste
Ripe apples and oak dominate at first before a full-bodied spiciness envelopes the palate and cuts through the sweetness.
    • Finish
The bold malt re-appears to mingle beautifully with the spices which soften over time. The influence of the Bere Barley is dramtic and unmistakeable; offering a taste of whisky as it used to be.
