An interesting and lively mole, unlike the boring 12, is deep enough and diverse, the wine influence is not something that is clearly pronounced, its presence is felt more indirectly, but it clearly serves good; very good work with the fortress - in 43% they have packed everything that is required, no thoughts about the subtil or lack of power; the balance is sustained, soft, pitey, at times something like Highland Park.
    • Nose
Open, dry, soft smoke, smoked chicken, smoked bacon, lemon, burnt needles, light tar notes, cooled coals, wet ash, grain, then grape colors, ripened grappa, dried herbs, thyme, yarrow, tansy.
    • Taste
Smoky woody, astringent, oily, wine sweet, charcoal, spicy wave, pepper, cardamom, ginger, spicy oak, grapes.
    • Finish
Spicy, ginger, dried herbs, oak, in the background light grape notes, burnt caramel, ash, caramel, charred wood, stout.

Whisky tasted just after a Brora 30 (release 2003) ... that was not so ridiculous! This Caol is not surprising or transcendent, but it is well done. That's not bad.
    • Nose
Peat and banana. Smoke rather discreet.
    • Taste
Subtle and measured. Frank attack on dry peat, cereal, hay. The banana and the orange zests bring gaiety and depth to this pleasant but too watery mouth.
    • Finish
Smoke plays here the first role. The sweet / fruity accompanies it.

  3. Willie JJ scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

I'm always in two minds about sweet wine finishes. Tokaji never seems
to work, while Sauternes seems very reliable. This one is fine I think.
It doesn't have perfect balance, but it's quite more-ish.
    • Nose
Plenty of 'malt in front of a peat fire' notes about this but the usual Caol Ila vanilla is replaced by a white wine acidity.
    • Taste
Very sweet with grape and kiwi adding acidity again. Plenty of malt and coal smoke washing about as well.
    • Finish
Fruity and sweet before the spice kicks in towards the end.
