Nose

In vegetal territory clearly, with acidic red apples, some man perfume stuff like musc and vetiver (not the first time I encounter that in a dry sherry), nutshells and green bark, even slightly meaty with a very slight sulfury twist (barely perceptible, no worries). With aeration, the sherry profile becomes more standard, while staying austere : tobacco, leather, slight cocoa, acidic cherries ... Nice nose but quite acidic, austere, and clearly alcohol seems to keep it a bit muted.

Taste

Sharp arrival, the proof isn't joking. Then again red apples and great vegetal development : Turkish coffee, gentiane, walnuts, bitter cocoa, a slight red wine note to round it off. Quite great, but "sharp and straight". Shows great complexity though, there are some very peculiar masculine vegetal notes, some rubbery tones, and many odd spices I can't quite identify. The old-school objective is achieved. Intense yet not so demonstrative though.

Finish

Probably the best part, red acidity makes a great come-back : rhubarb, redcurrants, even raspberries, alongside excellent and very complex OBE notes, by tiny metallic touches. Great finish.

Comments

I waited the very end of the dram to dry a drop of water and I should have earlier, as it clearly helps the nose and palate gain some spontaneity. I'll think of that for the rest of the sample. As is, it's just a bit too sharp for me to be a total winner, but it's something, and it's good to have an un-modern, sharp and vegetal sherry sometimes, this is not your everyday Glendro.

Chestnutoloroso sherry
Nose

Deep notes of sherry, "darker" than the nose promises. Dark chocolate, espresso, old wood, raisins, dates, sour cherries, toffee, a hint of wood polish. No off notes, a clean nicely sherried malt.

Taste

Intense sherry notes, obviously, with tons of dark fruits - blackcurrant, raisins, prunes, cherries, orange zest and strawberry marmelade. Nice notes of toffee and milk chocolate add up to the good impression. Some pepper, too.

Finish

Slightly spicy and tannic, but this is countered by truffles and notes of dark rum. Quite long.

Comments

A very nice sherried malt, although probably not much of the distillery character is left.

Nose

Almond past, tannins, dates, plums and forest fruits - blackberries. Cassis, some vegetables - cooked peas, syrup, nuts and ploughed fields.

Taste

Forest fruits - cassis, sweet and sourish candy like yelllow and pink (Dutch) foamcandy. I also find this in Inchgower and some good Edradour whisky. Later spices - cloves.

Finish

Fudge, orange, some vanilla, spices and finaly raisins.

Blair Athol 25 yo 1988/2014 (59.5%, La Maison du Whisky, Artist #4, first fill sherry, cask #7494, 567 bottles) Four stars One L, bravo! Colour: full gold. Nose: this one too is very floral, and despite the fact that it’s first fill sherry, it’s not a sherry monster at all. Some wonderful notes of IPA beer (Lagunitas, really – but I have to confess I know five IPAs, max), so probably fruity hops, then rather oranges, almond oil, orange blossom and a little fresh butter. The sherry tends to make it a little sour and ‘cellary’, but that really works. Old wine barrel. With water: becomes a little muddy, but that’s far from being a fault in this context. Also mead. Mouth (neat): really punchy, a tad metallic at first, then we have the same notes of fruity hoppy beer, perhaps strawberry drops, some mead again for sure, then overripe mirabelles that are about to ferment. Hard to know what’s from the sherry or not, but I enjoy this rather ‘antique’ style. With water: malt and oranges come out. And more Lagunitas ;-). Finish: medium, a little grassier. Orange juice, a few herbs, quinine… Wouldn’t that be Campari-orange? Comments: I find this excellent. We’re far from ‘wham-bam’ whiskies seen elsewhere, and it might be a little introspective, but it’s worth your time. SGP:451 - 87

Nose
