Nicely peated. Short aftertaste. But great price/value

Delicate and fresh, peat smoke, green fruit, slightly malty, slightly citrusy, heather honey, vanilla, apples, grape, some moist hay, with iodine notes in the background
    • Taste
Delicate, smooth, slightly smoky, citrus, apples, heather honey, vanilla, a pinch of pepper, a pinch of dried herbs, a slight bitterness of oak

Nothing special, not particularly complex, but one of the cheaper Penicillin to drink. I always recommend to friends who have not had contact with peat, it has such a delicate smoke that it should not scare anyone.
    • Nose
green apples, some herbs and smoke
    • Taste
sweet, a little smoke, apples, herbs, very delicate
    • Finish
      mild, short, uncomplicated, quickly transient

    nice smoke, unfortunately young looking

  8. Stanzeflasche scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

Peach, pear, apple, all very ripe, it goes well with fruits from the orchard. Thick honey. The peat is light, a little earthy, it's quite cereal, on wheat and puffed rice. A good dose of vanilla. Behind, floral essences, daisy, jasmine. A bit chalky. In the mouth, it is light, on cooked fruits. Malt, dry land. It's fresh, greenery, a hint of anise. Pleasant finish, not too short but not very consistent, with a slight return of greenery again. It's a bit dry. Anise returns after a while.

Peated Irish should be contraversial yet it is distinctive one. Reminds Islays although being specific.

Not impressed at all, for me in this price range much better whiskies can be found.
Nose is really okay but everything else is disappointing

  12. Mr. D. scored this whisky 81 points Expert Senior

I can't say I liked the peaty Irishman; Ireland is good for its classic flavors, and beyond the peat, it's somewhere else.
    • Nose
      83 83
Unusual, grassy haze; there are mineral-tablet notes; aromas of lemon, apple, duchess are clearly perceptible.
    • Taste
      81 81
Continuation of the aroma, the bitterness of the herbal infusion; Irish themes make their way: vanilla, apple, pear; but everything is flat, there is not enough depth.
    • Finish
      80 80
      Short, dry; smoke and lemon.

  13. rozzy scored this whisky 64 points Expert Junior

Very confusing flavors, in a bad way. Way too much grain, and weird smoky taste. I can't do anything with it and I really don't want to. I do make 'Irish coffee' with it.

  14. Don Cassi scored this whisky 72 points Expert Senior

Sweet, slightly smoky and relatively mild on the nose, with an association with Chinese food (plum jam?). After a while also aniseed.

Again very mild in the mouth, with a certain dryness, wood and fruit notes (banana).

The finish is still dry, woody and slightly smoky. Behind it a slight metallic bitterness.
    Length: 5/10

Overall nice smoker for friends of mild malts.

    Grade: 2-

Connemara Peated. Consumed Nov 2018. Soft 'band aids' up front. Apple, banana, toffee pennies, peat on a longer sniff. Typical notes, but in a pleasant way - not sickly etc, light estery. Rounded. Taste is similar. Burnt apple pie, woody, estery, interesting burnt scone, little toasted banana, banana loaf, fudge with lingering peat and salt. Really weird how that sweet caramelised banana note comes through all the peat. Really interesting. Can't work out how much I like it, but it's all gone, so...(3.5/84)

    - not quite as mild and significantly smokier than that

Connemara made a huge wow-wow during Irish Whiskey tasting, it's different in a way that made it easy and pleasant to drink. I am slightly disappointed with the finish.
(n)20 hint of smoke not overwhelming, lets some citric and vanilla flavours to join the game
(t)20 almost follows the nose, a part from more sweetness from ex-bourbon barrel appears now joined by wood notes and fresh fruit. Smoke is still there
(f)19 I'd like to point out that smoke changes to prunes and slight almost chocolaty bitterness emerges and vanishes as quickly as it comes
    (b) 20 well balanced but nothing complex, easy drinker

Irish whiskey and peat - do these two go together? Connemara's peatiness has its own style, which is distinctly different from Islay's peat bombs: it is more herbal, restrained and well-integrated. Light and floral on the nose, there is a mix of heather honey, citrus and whiffs of smoke. On the palate, the clean and peppery arrival is followed by an aromatic kick of lemon zest, bitter tea and hints of salt. The peat smoke returns in the finish, lingering on the tongue. Although slightly uneventful and simple, this malt offers a nice variation from the 'Irish theme'.

    • Nose

Very aromatic smoke. Slight herbal note. In the background some vanilla, maybe honey? Is there also oak? The (green) apple remains in the foreground.
Actually a great nose ..... or not!? ... but just fine.
    • Taste

    Batch Variation

Since Beam took over Cooley several years ago, Connemara was put in new livery, but the typical shape of the bottle was kept (contrary to, for example, Kilbeggan). The Peated Single Malt, sometimes referred to as ‘The Smokey One’, now got the mention ‘Original’ on the label, but the recepy of this double distilled, peated irish whiskey remained the unchanged.

The nose is pleasantly smoky with loads of vanilla, apple juice, banana peel and a surprising hint of white chocolate. A little bit of seaweeds and some mild ashes appear. This reminds me briefly (very briefly, mind you) of young Caol Ila. Some pencil shavings and almonds make it rather pleasant.

Unfortunately the body is quite flat and it is completely devoid of spiciness. First I get some sweet and sour fruit (think agrums), before some smoke develops. Reminds me a bit of smoked bacon now. Quite nice, despite being very light.

In the medium long finish it finally shows some spices.

It is better than I remember from previous releases, but it is still not a grand whiskey. Thank the Maker for batch variation!

An easy to drink dram and maybe a good one to start with peated single malt whiskies. Does not ask to much of the connoisseur.
    • Nose
Citrus fruits, pears, apples (if you ever smelled squeezed apples in the fruit juice production, you know what I mean), aromatic peat smoke, grass, maritime air, bloomy.
    • Taste
Honey, peat smoke, spiciness, gras. A silky mouthfeel. Light and smooth.
    • Finish
Short finish with the leftovers of the peat smoke and a little sweetness.

With a 'peated' you expect at least a strong presence of ehh, peat. But in the scent very slightly, and also barely present in the taste. Anyway slight smell and taste, little character. Some fruity and sweet, no 'burden' of alcohol. In other words, simple and easy whiskey for the untrained drinker. For experienced 'turf' enthusiasts, this whiskey does not have much to offer in my eyes.

The comes quite soft, smoke is there, not extreme but very aromatic. Kräuer, a lot of green apple, in the background you can find some vanilla or honey, maybe some oak. Good nose, but pretty one-dimensional ....
    • Taste
Very soft mouthfeel, a little more% would do that well for sure. Great sweetness, stimulating saliva, peat smoke is above all else.

Such a very light to toddler drink with a small smell of smoke. The term "peated" in the title does not fit the overall tone.
    • Nose
Flowers, apricot compote, heather honey, lemons, a little light smoke in the background. The smell is rather light than somehow smoky
    • Taste
Very sweet - vanilla, honey, oranges, lemons, trace elements of smoke, tea, milk chocolate. The taste is very delicate and the overall tone is very fruity.

An interesting marriage of the Irish profile and the delicate peat. It's balanced, well done, and the reduction is not especially noticeable. To consider for peat lovers who would like to discover Irish whiskey.
    • Nose
I was expecting a very peated whiskey, but that's not the case. The peat is finely lemony and delicate, not invasive. It is accompanied by fresh citrus and spring flowers.
    • Taste
Quite peculiar, I must say! A mixture of dry straw, citrus, and crushed flowers. Some peppery spices. Peat is here discreet.
    • Finish
A slight fruity dryness remains in the mouth, followed by dust and a few volutes of smoke that go up in the nose.

    • Nose
The distinctive honey-candy sweetness that blends in with the use of it is the rubber-smelling scent of Mercury wheels. Candy, potted soil freshly after the flower pouring. (85 b)
    • Taste
Peat, earthy, honey, peach smoke, the body is oily but somewhat sparse on the tongue. Spicy reverie. (83 b)
