From memory maybe a little better than the latest bottlings. The batches also seem to vary a lot.

    Tried from a line-up of 5 Bunnahabhain 12 year old from across the decades. The complete line-up was 14788, 11502, 5890, 101374 & 156568.

This was my favourite. Placed 2 of 5.

N: Sweeter still with more toffee and obvious Sherry/winey notes. Spearmint, tarragon, green fir, dry driftwood. The maritime theme is still there but it’s far less on oily or salt and is more minerally with wet granite, crushed charcoal dust and damp soil.

P: A little thin but surprisingly tropical with toasted pineapple, dried mango, quite dry with dark chocolate.

F: A little short, vegetal and green. Celery and a minty freshness.

  4. vlad78 scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Good, rather dessert whisky, a little watery, lacking in body, from this it loses a little.
    • Nose
      87 87
Iodine, salt, some industrial notes. Further, dried fruits rise in the glass: raisins, prunes, dried apricots, a little sour fresh berries. Perhaps it is a dogwood.
    • Taste
      84 84
Sweet, with a touch of salt and dried fruit, a little iodine, marine, industrial (as if you were walking on the sea under a diesel engine in wet weather). Unfortunately, a little watery, tumbling away rather quickly.
    • Finish
      83 83
Slightly sweet, slightly salty and short.

40% version found at the end of March 2018 during a vacation in a small supermarket on Kefalonia and emptied within 2 days with my best friend.

    • Nose
Comparatively bright and grassy, with a light caramel note and lemon yoghurt. A touch of sultanas, as well as vanilla and marzipan. Finally a whiff of red apple parts.
    • Taste
A touch of smoke, but also loads of caramel accompanied by some subtle spices (cloves and pepper). Toasted almonds as well as peanut skins. Slightly tannic as well.
    • Finish
      Lingering caramel, spices and oak.

    • Taste
Apple, banana, lemon, marzipan, honey, cinnamon, coffee, chocolate, raisins, apricot, hint of almonds and sea salt.
    • Finish
Medium, coffee, chocolate, lemon, raisins, apricot, honey, almonds and a hint of sea salt.

  8. Calmar scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

A young and slightly watery sea lap flavored with a good portion of dried fruits.
    • Nose
Restrained, moist, tart oak notes, green grass, wood dust, dirty raisins and dried apricots, a little sea brackish shades, rosin.
    • Taste
Slightly watery, sweet-oak, peppery, dried fruits, dried apricots, raisins, light industrial notes.
    • Finish
Spicy, warming, a little mineral-metallic notes, a little sweet dirty raisins and dried apricots, peppers, orange confiture, a little salt and vegetable shades.

    • Nose
Nice mixture of salt, fresh citrus notes and nutty-malty tones. A touch of seaweed, spruce honey and apples. Later also nut cake and mint.
    • Taste
Soft and light with malt, kelp and salted nuts. Will be more maritime and slightly fruity.
    • Finish
      Long, salted nuts.

On the nose, dark chocolate and red berries show up and the tea and dry oak diminish after about 10 minutes in the glass. The finish becomes less floral and more raisins or brown sugar after about 10-15 minutes.
    • Nose
Sherry and woodchar competing with salted caramel

lemon rind (becomes shortbread lemon bars with time)

      concentrated tea and dry oak
    • Taste
Quick hit of oak and smoke

       a prolonged taste of Sherry

quick succession of walnut, sea salt, and cinnamon

      dark bittersweet chocolate
    • Finish
fades to oak and bitter floral (orange blossom) with a
      whispering of cinnamon

  14. Waykid scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

This was okay, but the enhancement they made with the upping of the volume of alcohol to 46,3%, NC and NCF was just remarkable. The basic character seems the same and the distillate was strong enough even for 40% but what really bothered me here was what I associate with the colorant  - there was this off-putting, over-sweet and somehow greasy (not in a good way) note. So, even in contemporary malts, everything is not going the wrong way!

The Bunnahabhain 12 years is clearly a real Islay whisky and has all the characteristic flavors of smoke, iodine, seaweed, salt. But he is the most subtle I have tasted so far from the peated Islay's. It is wonderfully fresh and soft, despite its 46.3%, but it has those clear maritime connections. A delicious whisky! Especially if you want to enjoy the flavors of Islay one night but do not want to let everything dominate by Islay
    • Nose
Subtle smoke, vanilla, raisins, pear, marzipan, soft sherry tones. He has a clear fresh scent and is reminiscent of a beach walk where someone has a campfire. With one teaspoon of water: Vanilla, hay, wild flowers and fruity notes come through better. Honey and marzipan.
    • Taste
Light smoke and iodine / seaweed, vanilla, pear, juicy raisins. Has a nice balance of salty and sweet tones. Has a clear maritime character. He has a light and fresh mouthfeel With one teaspoon of water: Sweet vanilla pears, soft salty, fresh and fruity, sherry tones, soft smoke with a hint of iodine / seaweed, spicy and malty.
    • Finish
It has a medium warm, peppery aftertaste with a fine balance of salty and sweet notes.

One of the most maritim whiskys in my mind
    • Nose
      Salty, seaweed, nutty, toffee
    • Taste
      Pure seabreeze, salty, maritim
    • Finish
Medium short and again the sea

My rating is such high because it is one of my favorite daily drams. It's very salty, maritim and has a breeze of the sea. When drinking with closed eyes I feel I'm at a sea port and can smell the salty sea. I can almost feel the seaweed. Self-evident that I also like Sushi...

Tested in a blind test, I had a pretty big sample from Cyra (thanks!). At first drink, some bitter taste came to me, but it was receding at other dishes. I did not guess Bunna, I tipped some Balven whisky I did not drink yet. It will come to me as a basic, cheap drink.
    • Nose
Heavy style, malt, a lot of cocoa and woodiness, with a slight honey sweetness, cinnamon. Warm impression. (82 b)
    • Taste
A lot of wood, bitter chocolate, occasional glowing honey, a bit of bitter and varnish flavor. (81 b)

  22. Rom scored this whisky 84 points Expert Junior

Sweet nose, orange, milk chocolate, light nuts and dust, peat suggestion. Sweet mouth, like nose more light tannins and pepper, long finish on orange. Pleasant.

  23. HammerHead scored this whisky 78 points Connoisseur

A whisky that clearly does not benefit from the prevailing industry standard bottling features at that time. Smells and tastes ok, but also very thin. Furthermore too short of a finish.

The current natural 46+% bottling is a very big improvement over this.

I bought it back in 2009 and haven't tasted it for a while. I must say I got dissapointed. I used to love this dram before, but not know. No finish what so ever, and not much taste either. Maybe my bottle have lost its taste over time, I don't know.

    Nothing compared to the 12y @ 46,3 % ABV
    • Nose
Soft, salty.  Grassy. Some white fruits. Lightly sherried.
    • Taste
Grassy, salty. Not much there,  watery. It is easy to drink.
    • Finish
      Barely.

  27. Igor scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

Full of substance, deep, rich, complex, sophisticated - all convinced me to catch a liking of that fine spirit immediately, - a true firecracker of flavours.
    • Nose
Belgian patisserie, dried banana chips, jam filling, honeyed malt, tropical fruits, dried fruit, dewberry, red raspberry, sea breeze, marzipan, sweet sherry, little smoke, caramel and nougat bar.
    • Taste
Harmonious, silky-soft smoothness. Light-bodied. Chocolates, cinnamon powder, cocoa, oatmeal cookies, raisins, figs, caramel candies, small trail of Pedro Ximenez/Oloroso?, salty almond, lemon juice.
    • Finish
Pleasantly lingering aftertaste. Very light, delicately flavoured and skilfully balanced. Subdued citrus fruit, wild honey, cashew nuts, dried apricots.

  30. Jonkers scored this whisky 79 points Expert Senior

The nose promises a lot but that isn't noticible in the taste.
    • Nose
Malt and oak and a hint of (peat) smoke. Very salty and very fresh (seaweed). Vanilla and some caramel. Almond and chocolate. Complex.
    • Taste
Spicy and light peppery. A little sweetness from pineapple. Some chocolate and malt but also some almond and salt.
    • Finish
At the beginning spicy. Dry and malty. Superficial and not very impressive. Short.

    A classic!

  32. D3US scored this whisky 78 points Expert Senior

This is not bad. The salty tang is nice, so is the citrus note. Not a very big gun though.
    • Nose
Fresh, citrus fruit. A big sea wind note, salty, coastal. Some licorice or anise. Lemon & lime, malt.
    • Taste
Heavy malt, a slight bitterness, salty licorice. Citrus fruit again, vanilla now as well. A bit drying and prickly towards the end.
    • Finish
The slight bitter note is here again, but it's still fresh. The sea breeze is back. Vanilla and malt together with that bit of licorice is left at the end.

This one I bought when I was visiting Bunnahabhain in 2009, and my wife likes this one very much, because it is so smooth

  37. karloff scored this whisky 81 points Specialist

A nice quality malt but not to everyones tastes i imagine. This was also a fathers day gift x
    • Nose
Very nutty with a bit of smoke. The smell of old leather is strong in this one
    • Taste
A medium body with alittle sea salt. This malt is so woody it's like chewing on a stick but in a good way
    • Finish
a long and dry finish, it's also what i would call a warmer

  38. CrilleVBG scored this whisky 75 points Expert Senior

The aroma of this whisky is so bad, I don't know what to say. I hesitated to drink it..
    • Nose
The smell of old socks is there. A sour smell of old basement...
    • Taste
A sweet taste, with a hint of smoke. But feel little diluted..
    • Finish
Very short finish, I want it to be twice as long, at least.
