  1. HammerHead scored this whisky 77 points Expert Senior

A whisky that clearly does not benefit from the prevailing industry standard bottling features at that time. Smells and tastes ok, but also very thin. Furthermore too short of a finish.

The current natural 46+% bottling is a very big improvement over this.

Nice mixture of salt, fresh citrus notes and nutty-malty tones. A touch of seaweed, spruce honey and apples. Later also nut cake and mint.

On the nose, dark chocolate and red berries show up and the tea and dry oak diminish after about 10 minutes in the glass. The finish becomes less floral and more raisins or brown sugar after about 10-15 minutes.
    • Nose
Sherry and woodchar competing with salted caramel

lemon rind (becomes shortbread lemon bars with time)

      concentrated tea and dry oak
    • Taste
Quick hit of oak and smoke

       a prolonged taste of Sherry

quick succession of walnut, sea salt, and cinnamon

      dark bittersweet chocolate
    • Finish
fades to oak and bitter floral (orange blossom) with a
      whispering of cinnamon

  9. Waykid scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

This was okay, but the enhancement they made with the upping of the volume of alcohol to 46,3%, NC and NCF was just remarkable. The basic character seems the same and the distillate was strong enough even for 40% but what really bothered me here was what I associate with the colorant  - there was this off-putting, over-sweet and somehow greasy (not in a good way) note. So, even in contemporary malts, everything is not going the wrong way!

The Bunnahabhain 12 years is clearly a real Islay whisky and has all the characteristic flavors of smoke, iodine, seaweed, salt. But he is the most subtle I have tasted so far from the peated Islay's. It is wonderfully fresh and soft, despite its 46.3%, but it has those clear maritime connections. A delicious whisky! Especially if you want to enjoy the flavors of Islay one night but do not want to let everything dominate by Islay
    • Nose
Subtle smoke, vanilla, raisins, pear, marzipan, soft sherry tones. He has a clear fresh scent and is reminiscent of a beach walk where someone has a campfire. With one teaspoon of water: Vanilla, hay, wild flowers and fruity notes come through better. Honey and marzipan.
    • Taste
Light smoke and iodine / seaweed, vanilla, pear, juicy raisins. Has a nice balance of salty and sweet tones. Has a clear maritime character. He has a light and fresh mouthfeel With one teaspoon of water: Sweet vanilla pears, soft salty, fresh and fruity, sherry tones, soft smoke with a hint of iodine / seaweed, spicy and malty.
    • Finish
It has a medium warm, peppery aftertaste with a fine balance of salty and sweet notes.
