hometasting the excellent, Laphroaig-esque Ballechin 10 .. what an (affordable) discovery.. such a cracking 10 yo!.. i read that whiskyfun placed an 89 karat golden ring on this and i can see why it is exaggerated and true at the same time.. there is certainly a lot of enthusiasm for this whisky.. it elicits a lot of enthusiasm.. it is utter whisky-pleasure, a reminder that good whisky musn’t be expensive and a renewal of the Scots’ unparalleled ability to hone in the art of distilling and that of playing with wood and time.. as i said, a lot of enthusiasm :)

Heavily peated (>50ppm). Heavy legs. The distillate works magically with the peat, I’d call this lemony peat. However, all flavours except the peat flattened out quickly once it landed on the palate. Happiness and the high expectation gained from the nose has unfortunately turned into disappointment.

[78-82] I'll gladly welcome another dram.

    N 28
Ashy, earthy peat. Lightly medicinal. Lemony. Unripe pineapple. Brine. Freshly crushed peppercorns. A whiff of red apple slices and damp wood. Creamy sherry influences (dark ripe fruits) slowly surface although hidden behind the heavy peat. Getting really sweet after 20 minutes.

    P 24
Sour, sweet, heavy peat, charred oak. Bonfire. Heated peppery spices slowly transform into cinnamon and cloves. A handful of Brazil nuts. A bit dry on the edges. Fruits (figs, red apples) are rather subtle here.

    F 22
Mid, slightly dry finish. moderate smoke. Rather plain here. Watered down nuts and oak. Very mild fruits.

Smoke, iodine, sweet fruits, vanilla, menthol, ash. Bright, pretty pleasant and i would even say balanced nose

again smoke, now earth, vanilla, sweet, peppery. The taste seems half empty
    • Finish

rather short. smoke, sweetness, light pepperiness, then dryness and menthol with vanilla, again seems that something is missing here as well

A beautiful smoke dominates, only occasionally other notes perceptible. Solid malt

Smoke (campfire, bacon), monotonous with no other notes
    • Taste
      85 85
Velvety, lots of smoke. There is also vanilla and a slight sweetness. Increasingly spicy and dry. Succeded!
    • Finish
      80 80
Monosyllabic again. Almost all that remains is spice (oak), smoke is unexpectedly reserved. Seems older than it actually is.

Sympathetic, complex nose, with a fine, grainy, vegetable peat, all highlighted by a fairly round Sherry. Fruits, but also vegetables, vegetables, and a little vanilla at the end. Hay. Dry land. In the mouth, the Sherry takes over, it is more gourmet, chocolate nun, sponge cake, caramel. Slightly oaky, with some varnish, some charcoal. Final correct but not exceptional, long just enough, on earth, smoke. Stable hints.

This came from nowhere and took me by surprise. Loads of dark fruits, pineapple, banana, oranges, vanilla and earthy peat. Musty. A little dirty, in a good way. It drowns easily though, so I wouldn't recommend more than a couple of drops of water.

Clearly peaty aroma. Lots of smoke. Sweet smoke. Lots of vanilla and caramel. You can clearly feel the malt drying on the peat.
    • Taste
      84 84
Sweet peat. Smoke. Sea. Sea breeze. Salt. Quite oily and thick in the mouth. Then comes the spices. There is a certain spiciness. Black pepper. Caramel.
    • Finish
      82 82
Spices. White pepper. Caramel. Sweet smoke. Sea. Salt. Medium-long finish.

Something between pomade, burnt horn, horse hair and candle soot, there is also a little sherry, the smoke tends towards ash. It would be clear where the Ballechin 14 Manzanilla for the local shop came from ... Time to look for something older made of refill / bourbon. Good material for not too much euros (45?).

Peated expression from the small distillery of Edradour. Not only it adds some smoke to the basic 10 y.o. expression, but gives a complex earthy taste to a basis of wood and sherry notes.
Quite different from a maritime island peated whisky, yet with strong, round and warmingly balanced flavours.
    Totally worth the price.

  18. Jonathan Kleß scored this whisky 88 points Expert Junior

I think this should be a 2016/2017 batch:
Substantial meaty flavours with a well spiced edge to it. Form is light and crisp, without any funkiness from the peat really coming through.
Very pleasant herbal complexity in the nose too. In other mainland peaters I find the ashiness can quickly overpower, here it is relatively integrated.
Manages to be different from Islay, while still seeming pretty deliberate and consistent.
    • Nose
Very fresh, expressive. Herbal, lemon zest, light honey. Crushed apple mint. Fresh orange juice. Wacholderschinken. Grilled pork. Ashy smoke. Embers of a campfire.
The medicinal notes stay low in the background. A slight grassy side with broken branches (quite pleasant in this case). White pepper and vanilla.
    • Taste
Light texture and soft entry, with a quick development. Starts soft and honeyed, before the citrusy side kicks back in. Big notes of squeezed limes. Fresh coriander and parsley.
The peat shows in form of more grilled pork products, very clean and well integrated.
    • Finish
Clean, slightly spicy. Lots of ash, dried ginger and cardamom. A few whisps of vanilla and honey. Green peppercorn.

Iodine, lots of smoke, malty and grain. Slight acidity at the end.
    • Taste
      84 84
Very fruity for such smoke. Peat in the foreground, but currants right behind it. A bit peppy.
    • Finish
      82 82
Medium long (especially for peat). Sweetness and ash.

  21. Malzbrenner scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

A 10 standard from Ballechin with a decent 46% vol. bottled. Certainly polarizing, but in my opinion greatly underestimated and of great quality in its price segment.
    • Nose
      87 87
Sour fruits, ham-flavored smoking chips, raspberries, apricots, vanilla, the longer the whisky is in the glass, the more fruity it becomes in the fragrance. The smoke is very nicely integrated and surrounded by a great sweetness.
    • Taste
      87 87
Very mild on the palate, oily sweetness and soft fruit notes at the beginning, vanilla and spices follow and finally a strong, slightly bitter spice sets in. The smoke can be tasted clearly, young and impetuous but harmonizes perfectly with the sweetness. Impressively well done!
    • Finish
      85 85
Amazingly long in the finish, there is once again a sparkling freshness paired with light bitter and smoke notes. Over time, a bitter tone spreads, which is not particularly annoying, but prevents a harmonious finish.

Nose: toasted cereal, graham crackers, also the sharpness of celery, currant juice, a little pencil eraser, some sheep wool, a little bitter brushfire smoke. Rose petals.
    • Taste
      87 87
Palate: On the palate the fire is actually warm kilned wood, clean burning, not a brushfire. Some cayenne and prune juice, cane sugar, a little mint and some walnuts.
    • Finish
      83 83
Finish: cane sugar, some green olive brine and currant candies, and the brushfire smoke returns. Tobacco. Bitter dark chocolate. A touch of cough syrup keeps this from a higher score for me.

Main problem of this dram is its price. It really tastes kinda like a watered down Ardbeg Ten. Its not as interesting. And its not even as pleasant as Ledaig Ten. Imo not worth the price.
    • Nose
      peat
    • Taste
peat, ash (kinda like Ardbeg Ten lite), little "watery", very mild sweetness
    • Finish
      black tea, caraway,peat

  25. hogsheadwhisky scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

It is not super complicated. Straight smoke with a nice citrus note. And this hay or stable component, which presents itself from the nose to the finish. The price / performance ratio is, in my opinion, good. I like him. Nice for a barbecue or for a nice video evening.
    • Nose
      86 86
The color of ten-year-old Ballechin is a bright gold. Sweet phenolic smoke. That is the first association. In the background you can smell a very interesting smoked lemon with a peel. There is also something like old hay or banana. With some rest, the lemon turns orange.
    • Taste
      84 84
Strong mouthfeel. Lively and sweet at the beginning. The hay and the lemon are immediately available. Then it becomes peppery. The oak is coming.
    • Finish
      84 84
The smoke remains in the mouth for a very long time. Very slight bitterness begins. Dark chocolate. The oak is also noticeable here. The stall influence is still there. Very interesting.

  26. Totoro scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Serge over at Whiskyfun has this at 89 points... I wouldn't go that far, but I'll say this is certainly underrated. Performs better (and seems older, or at least, more mature) than its stated age would have you suspect. Good balance between the different cask types as well as between spirit and wood. Recommended at under 40 €...
    • Nose
      86 86
A soft but "dark" nose, as if both ex-sherry and heavily charred ex-bourbon casks had been used. Lots of roast aromas (coal, ash, char, coffee etc.) alongside a soft, jammy fruitiness - mainly red berries. The smoke is there, but it, too, is rather soft and never dominates. In a sense, this is a unicorn: a well-balanced, harmonious malt from idiosyncratic Edradour. Okay, there's still a farmy aspect to the smoke, but overall, this borders on the dreaded "smooth." I'm actually not mad at this! Pretty decent for its price segment.
    • Taste
      86 86
Very (and I mean: very) soft on arrival. Sweet and spicy initially, with the smoke coming up big about halfway through and the wild berries and red-fruit jams wafting along in the background. Again: not half bad! Super sippable and lusciously sweet, but a residual bitterness in the background (acrid smoke) prevents it from getting outright cloying.
    • Finish
      85 85
More than okay for its age. Of course the peat smoke lingers the longest, but it's accompanied for a good long while by earthy, herbacious notes and soft but lovely echoes of juicy refill sherry casks.

Tasted Whiskyschiff Zurich 2017 --> very nice!
May 2022: Bottle almost empty. Still a nice whisky...
    • Nose
Smoke, citrus, later going slightly towards orange, heather or hay, honey, milk chocolate, very slightly fresh cherries
    • Taste
Honey sweet, smoke, citrus, caramel, vanilla, medium-bodied, cinnamon and cherries, hints of hay
      very slightly sharp
The sweetness covers the sharpness and is always present
      Already relatively complex
    • Finish
The honey sweetness remains, as well as smoke and vanilla, cherries
      Overall medium length finish

A good whisky for the money. The smoke is more reminiscent of campfire smoke and smoked meat. In addition, a certain mental freshness in it. But you also notice that there were sherry casks in the game. There are dark aromas and a bit of bitterness, which does not look very elegant.

    • Taste

Not as full and strong as the nose seemed to promise. A little pepper, some peat and sweet smoke, sal ammoniac. A little flat, some roasted meat still far at the background.

Peated smoke, sweet fruits, furniture polish, fresh leafs, dry hay, cake, vanilla and dust notes on nose.

Peated smoke, coal dust, dried fruits notes on palate.

Spices, dust, peated smoke, red apples notes on long finish.

  33. Marko_I did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

Tasty, the kind of smoke fits perfectly to the Edradour basic character, ~ € 45 fit.
    • Nose
strong smoke, rather heavy, sweetish, earth, farm (not maritime or phenolic or grassy-bitter), a touch of mushrooms, smoked bacon & leather, the sweetness goes slightly towards orange marmalade (but he does not get over fruity)
    • Taste
Strong, full-bodied, almost greasy, the smoke is ashen, burnt meat, to tart sweetness, bitter chocolate sugar beet syrup, old leather, medium pepper sharpness
    • Finish
Long, warm, again properly baked crust of sweet marinated meat, pepper, then camillan

  34. Rosebank88 scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

First malty flavors, leather and a smoldering peat smoke. Gradually pepper, coal dust, dark chocolate, chestnut honey, dark beet syrup and a tinctuous Floralität follow.
    • Taste

    • Finish
Long, roasted chestnuts and peat smoke.

After the nose, I would have expected a grenade and also the 46% are promising, in the finish and taste, he unfortunately falls off a bit. Dr alcohol is barely noticeable
    • Nose
surprisingly strong phenolic sweet smoke. with time comes only a metholfrische, but is very well involved. eventually floral notes of fresh hay and fruity hints
    • Taste
Unfortunately, the taste is a little disappointing after the nose. light and almost watery, even the dominant smoke is barely noticeable. confusing...
    • Finish
In the finish, the cold ash-smoke comes back but not as violent as in the nose. Something salty but otherwise flat. rather medium

Nose: earthy smoke, hot coals, salty smoked ham, malty sweetness (slightly flowery / soapy with time), acidic yeasty notes, citrus fruits Heavily smoky, dry and earthy. One time a little different smoker. You have to like it - I'm not sure here yet ^^
Taste: sparkling fresh with lemon, again this fierce yeasty notes, warm glowing smoke, ashen and dry when swallowing, an aroma of smoked meat and grill spice spreads in the mouth, a hint of sweetness comes through and mixes with the warm ash to a medium-long finish.
Something completely different but you have to feel like it. For me certainly nothing to drink every day (Ok that should not make anyway ^ ^). Good whisky with character but still quite young and impetuous.

hefty, earthy peat smoke, fermented, yeasty, "hot", alcohol, maybe there is some sweetness and sherry in the background

with water: less alcohol, more accessible, more sherry and vanilla
    • Taste
feisty, smoky, sherry sweetness, dominant menthol (!), ash tray, peppery, alcohol, fermented, smoked ham

Has a menthol cigarette dissolved here? Never had anything comparable, interesting, very special, can stand a lot of water. Edradour-typical "peffrig hot fermented alcoholic"
    • Nose
Strong, earthy smoke, fermented-alcoholic, "spicy / hot", the alcohol is dominant, some sweetness, maybe sherry in the background
With water: less alcoholic, much more accessible, sherry becomes clearer, vanilla comes
    • Taste
Strong smoky, slightly sherry-sweet onset, violent menthol! Ashtray, peppery, alcohol, fermented, Black Forest ham
With water: milder, sherry-sweeter, smoke and menthol remain dominant and can not be drowned with plenty of water, cereals come, oak as well

    • Finish
      Long, sweet and fruity.

I really like edradour whisky, but this ballechin is not my favorit one of andrew symington.

pleasantly fresh, but powerful malt. Quite complex malt that knows how to please round and fruity. He shows me every time from a different, beautiful side. My surprise of the year 2014.
    • Nose
Islay-typical smoke that gradually gives way to a strong citrus note, tangerine and hay with some fresh grass
    • Taste
Again smoke with lemon and white pepper. Enormous sweetness with Arkazienhonig and cane sugar
    • Finish
medium to long ... sometimes sweet and fruity, sometimes fresh and peppery

As you would expect from Edradour you get what you expect: a heavy peated whisky with the typical Brennereicharakter!

I didn't find no hospital. Only some socks that were on constant duty for at least 72 hours together with some ham and danish cheese. On some days (thank God only on some days) I also find the typical Edradour-curd-soap in it which is disgusting. Apart from that, the expression is delicious. One of the biggest peated standard bangs for the buck under 50 Euros.

On the other hand I have to admit that I personally would prefer a bottle of the discovery series #4 (oloroso) and a bottle of discovery series #6 (bourbon) over this one (vatting of bourbon and oloroso casks).84 points

I do love my peaty whiskies with lots of smoky notes and spices. This has none of that. Tastes like it has been knocked up in a hospital. I was really looking forward to drinking this especially after reading other members notes. Very disappointed.

I bought this at the distillery, should have asked for a taste of it first.
    • Nose
Straight away it smells like a first aid kit, swirl it around and take a couple of deep sniffs, bleached floor, germoline antiseptic ointment and swimming baths foot dip. Terrible.
    • Taste
Smelt like TCP and tastes like it. Sickly sweet and dry and very medicinal. If it has one redeeming feature, it is quite smooth to drink, which sounds a bit weird considering what it tastes like.
    • Finish
Very dry and bitter on the tongue, like an old battery. Old stale ash tray on the death.

the smoke lasts a long time
behind it then citrus, yellow fruits and also a freshness
    • Taste
      cold smoke, then sweetness immediately
      Smoke and again sweetie
Honey, tangerine, some oak and spices
    • Finish

A wonderfully successful example, does not come to the Arbeg TEN but does not hide from Islay!
    • Nose
Islay-like peat smoke, it is easy to see the difference to BenRiachs bacon smoke, behind it fruity notes. No alcoholic burning.
    • Taste
Smoldering licorice, little to no sherry. Pleasantly mild, no dilution necessary.
    • Finish
Long and dry, for his 10 years surprisingly much barrel.

Great nose, if the taste was a bit more pepp perfect.
    • Nose
Nice cold smoke, some smoked bacon, behind the smoke sweet and a bit floral.
    • Taste
Sweet, grassy, no smoke in the mouth. Very balanced and round. In between times a little bitterness.
    • Finish
Fresh and soft, some spice remains in the mouth.

Not very complex, but heavily peated indeed. A tad too simple for my liking.
    • Nose
Leather, hospital, tar and lanolin. Some sweetness, but that's unspecific.
    • Taste
      Body: warming, almost sharp. Drying.
Palate: Tar, Tar,and even more tar. Feels like a campfire extinguishing in your mouth, dry and ashy. Close to the nose, there is some sweetness behind that, but it won't come out and play. Even a bit salty.
    • Finish
Long. The ashes fading away, more candies now.
