Serge over at Whiskyfun has this at 89 points... I wouldn't go that far, but I'll say this is certainly underrated. Performs better (and seems older, or at least, more mature) than its stated age would have you suspect. Good balance between the different cask types as well as between spirit and wood. Recommended at under 40 €...

A soft but "dark" nose, as if both ex-sherry and heavily charred ex-bourbon casks had been used. Lots of roast aromas (coal, ash, char, coffee etc.) alongside a soft, jammy fruitiness - mainly red berries. The smoke is there, but it, too, is rather soft and never dominates. In a sense, this is a unicorn: a well-balanced, harmonious malt from idiosyncratic Edradour. Okay, there's still a farmy aspect to the smoke, but overall, this borders on the dreaded "smooth." I'm actually not mad at this! Pretty decent for its price segment.

Very (and I mean: very) soft on arrival. Sweet and spicy initially, with the smoke coming up big about halfway through and the wild berries and red-fruit jams wafting along in the background. Again: not half bad! Super sippable and lusciously sweet, but a residual bitterness in the background (acrid smoke) prevents it from getting outright cloying.

More than okay for its age. Of course the peat smoke lingers the longest, but it's accompanied for a good long while by earthy, herbacious notes and soft but lovely echoes of juicy refill sherry casks.

Fine smoke, peat, some bacon, grassy, fresh, some white pepper, oak, spices. Nice dram, interesting.

  4. Malzbrenner scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

A 10 standard from Ballechin with a decent 46% vol. bottled. Certainly polarizing, but in my opinion greatly underestimated and of great quality in its price segment.

Sour fruits, ham-flavored smoking chips, raspberries, apricots, vanilla, the longer the whisky is in the glass, the more fruity it becomes in the fragrance. The smoke is very nicely integrated and surrounded by a great sweetness.
    • Taste
      87 87
Very mild on the palate, oily sweetness and soft fruit notes at the beginning, vanilla and spices follow and finally a strong, slightly bitter spice sets in. The smoke can be tasted clearly, young and impetuous but harmonizes perfectly with the sweetness. Impressively well done!
    • Finish
      85 85
Amazingly long in the finish, there is once again a sparkling freshness paired with light bitter and smoke notes. Over time, a bitter tone spreads, which is not particularly annoying, but prevents a harmonious finish.

Nose: toasted cereal, graham crackers, also the sharpness of celery, currant juice, a little pencil eraser, some sheep wool, a little bitter brushfire smoke. Rose petals.
    • Taste
      87 87
Palate: On the palate the fire is actually warm kilned wood, clean burning, not a brushfire. Some cayenne and prune juice, cane sugar, a little mint and some walnuts.
    • Finish
      83 83
Finish: cane sugar, some green olive brine and currant candies, and the brushfire smoke returns. Tobacco. Bitter dark chocolate. A touch of cough syrup keeps this from a higher score for me.

Main problem of this dram is its price. It really tastes kinda like a watered down Ardbeg Ten. Its not as interesting. And its not even as pleasant as Ledaig Ten. Imo not worth the price.
    • Nose
      peat
    • Taste
peat, ash (kinda like Ardbeg Ten lite), little "watery", very mild sweetness
    • Finish
      black tea, caraway,peat

It is not super complicated. Straight smoke with a nice citrus note. And this hay or stable component, which presents itself from the nose to the finish. The price / performance ratio is, in my opinion, good. I like him. Nice for a barbecue or for a nice video evening.

The color of ten-year-old Ballechin is a bright gold. Sweet phenolic smoke. That is the first association. In the background you can smell a very interesting smoked lemon with a peel. There is also something like old hay or banana. With some rest, the lemon turns orange.
    • Taste
      84 84
Strong mouthfeel. Lively and sweet at the beginning. The hay and the lemon are immediately available. Then it becomes peppery. The oak is coming.
    • Finish
      84 84
The smoke remains in the mouth for a very long time. Very slight bitterness begins. Dark chocolate. The oak is also noticeable here. The stall influence is still there. Very interesting.
