    Yes, I'm in heaven
    • Nose
At the very beginning is this beautiful slightly sour-sweet barrel note
which strongly reminds of an old Kawasaki
and a bit similar to older Glen Gariochs

      _______________________________________________
a fullness of aromas that almost irritating

an old summer house, you slowly open the front door
a wealth of smells comes to meet you
the dust is flickering in the sun
and shines on a small barrel
it smells like mild thick cucumbers with the sherry in the barrel
      or they were melons
      Melons in sherry
You try to imagine what happened here
on the sideboard lies a piece of dusty chocolate
it smells like the old sherry again
Your gaze falls on a broken chair
someone had tried to glue a new leg on
fresh and old wood in an exciting interplay
      he was disturbed
Your look goes over the old dusty furniture
      and the worn leather chair
a pepper mill lies broken on the floor
Your eyes are looking for the peppercorns on the ground
You can find it between dusty raisins and chocolate
      What happened?
the air is heavy and stuffy
      You open the patio doors
a lush exotic garden after a summer rain
the air smells spicy and soft
      life is Beautiful
You step out of the gloomy room into the damp, warm garden
Melons with firm flesh that smell ripe and sweet after the rain
Kiwifruit and sweet vanilla pods mix with the intense smell of eucalyptus
an apricot is on the ground
      Their sweet meat attracts insects
      the moist mint smells
You turn around and look back into the house
sweet - sour sherry, raisins, chocolate, pepper and old furniture
Her smell has come out into the garden
as if an old story would dissolve
      in new sweet events
    • Taste
You open your lips and get a silky cool kiss
Your tongue tingles sweetly for ripe fruit
      Melon, kiwi,
      interspersed with fine acid
      bitter chocolates
      exotic grasses
      Vanilla and mint
      then comes Melon & Sherry
      You close your mouth
and feel how seductively sweet and tart your tongue tastes
      tea flavors
      marzipan
      eucalyptus
      a primeval forest feeling
beautiful old barrel flavors stick to your palate
like the sweet juice of hot apples
    • Finish
      long…
      intense spicy
      getting sweeter
      eucalyptus

He always comes back with beautiful barrel flavors

You think he's gone a long time
there you taste it again on your palate
      mmh, he came again
      A big movie theater

A magical dram. A tour de force.

Experience is the memory of many things. (Diderot)
    • Nose
Greatness of age, mastery of the blend and perfect balance that emerges. A slap.
Fruits, sherry, wood, floral, medicinal, everything is jostling. This dram wants to express itself and makes it known.

Quince, grape skin, strawberry, papaya, pineapple, mango, melon. A beautiful tropical variation delicate.
Good old and precious wood, rustic, lightly waxed is there to remind the age of the liquid. One feels in an old office frozen by time. Old dusty newspaper.
A little camphor is there without exceeding, to add a precious side.
A very light rose is there, with its almond paste.

Each puff is different. The flavors are turning, but each one is superb and balanced. Should we really drink it? The fear of falling back on earth is there.
    • Taste
Sirupeux, and once again only one word comes: Balance.
Precious wood is always there and is softer than ever in its wax and dust.
A more tertiary side, under wood and tobacco, makes its appearance.
The fruits are always of the part not worry but a little more cooked than at the nose.
A little black pepper and liquorice.
A hair less complex than the nose but still a work of goldsmith.
    • Finish
The finish is sweet, long, camphorated, on cognac and chocolate truffle, black pepper, mint. Slightly astringent but fresh.

The empty glass smells of mandarin peel.

Nikka have assembled their oldest cask of Miyagikyo, a 1969 and their oldest cask of Yoichi, a… 1945, while the malt content lies around 70%.

Comments: a gorgeous whisky. The nose was otherworldly. Happy birthday, Nikka!

The Nikka 40 yo (43%, OB, blend, 700 decanters, 2014)

Five stars A supremely elegant super-brand-new decanter done to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the founding of Nikka. I think they could teach a few Scots a lesson in design, erm… Look, the price isn’t low (500,000 Yen so approx 3,600 €) but Nikka have assembled their oldest cask of Miyagikyo, a 1969 and their oldest cask of Yoichi, a… 1945, while the malt content lies around 70%. I find the fact that they haven’t decided to bottle the 1945 as a single cask priced at 100,000€ particularly noteworthy and, I’d add, even more elegant. Unless, of course, that one was ‘worn-out’, but I doubt they’d have even used it here in that case. That would have been very un-Japanese! Colour: deep gold. Nose: e.x.t.r.a.o.r.d.i.n.a.r.y. It’s not whisky, it’s a journey, through Japan of course, with three main stages. First, the most subtle combination of tropical fruits. Two, a delicate blend of soft spices and precious woods. And three, more essential oils. Oh and four, after fifteen minutes, everything at the same time, but with calm and serenity. It’s almost music. As for more specific aromas, I’d mention mangos, bergamots, papayas, ripe strawberries, incense, cinnamon, camphor, eucalyptus, aniseed, crème de menthe and perhaps 5,000 tinier aromas. The freshness is absolutely flabbergasting. Forgot to mention touches of roasted sesame seeds. Love roasted sesame seeds. Mouth: a touch ‘below’ the nose, as always with old whiskies. Remember a significant portion of this whisky is 69 years old! So we have quite some dark chocolate and cinnamon in the arrival, as well as some black tea and tobacco, but what happens after just thirty seconds is rather miraculous, with some zesty lime, lemon balm and bitter oranges ‘lifting’ the whole. A wee touch of paraffin/plasticine, but that’s no handicap, especially since the orangey side tends to grow over time and balances it. Finish: sure it’s not the longest ever but it’s still fresh and lively, actually fresher than during the arrival. Comments: a gorgeous whisky. The nose was otherworldly. Happy birthday, Nikka!

Seems there is a bit of Ben Nevis single grain in that one! The grain is definitely noticeAble but great balance with the sweet spices from wood and the fruity malts from yoichi and miyagikyo, very good
