  1. LeChiffre scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

Wonderful Caol Ila with a harmonious and exciting earthy-maritime-salty note as a counterpart to the often typical sweetness and citrus notes. Harmonizes wonderfully, a great bottling.

The whisky had to be open for a good week so that it could realize its potential. Still, he wasn't able to fully convince me.
Addendum from 09/12/2020: In the finish it was extremely smoky but is otherwise well balanced.
    • Nose
The complexity is very high, which the pastel color does not suggest from the start. The following notes come into their own: light smokehouse smoke, earth, vanilla, peat, wood and wood glue.
    • Taste
Very malty and spicy and sweet. Allspice and nutmeg.
Pepper comes into its own with water.
    • Finish
The finish is reminiscent of a newly built roof structure with fresh glue. Herbs can be heard in the background. The sweetness is no longer so clear.

I really liked my first bottle of this but when I bought another bottle and revisited it one year later, it soon became a little bit boring. Have had enough of this one, I guess.

Simple clean and sharp Caol Ila. Excellent.
    • Nose
Seabreeze all over the place. Smoke on the beach.
    • Taste
Strong, medicinal, salty. With water, lemon.
    • Finish
      Long, salty, earthy.

  9. Thermidor scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

There is a reason I've bought multiple bottles of this and it's pretty simple: it just is a bloody good Caol Ila that's dangerously quaffable.
    • Nose
This is barely more colored than Lagavulin 12.

Woodsmoke and very vivid freshly cut grapefruit. Some salinity and ever so little rockiness but the grapefruit really dominates the bouquet. Citrus is of course one of Caol Ila's signature markers but this is all in its own category. You sometimes find these Caol Ilas where the fruitiness has gone completely overboard and they are always a riot. A very clean profile too, no soot or ash.

With water the freshness just increases.

Compared to Port Askaig 25 and MacKillop's Caol Ila 1979 34yo in glasses next to it, this one does not have any of those 'odd' and slightly greasy aromas that I think are found in CI up until at least 1985, so by about 1995 they are just completely gone. I wonder what the cutoff year is, or how this works in general since they seem fainter in 1980s stuff than in '70s...?With water it just gets cleaner, and more marine with the citrus also coming out stronger.
    • Taste
Neat: Salted liquorice, nicely age-worn wood that just sits there and supports everything instead of stealing the show, and quite a bit of peat. Citrus is very prominent here but feels more like grapefruit than CI's usual lemon. Water really brings this one together. I suggest adding a few teaspoons, not just a drop.
    • Finish
Neat: Too fleeting, probably on account of the high strength. With water it hangs around. Mostly tar and wood, but in a well balanced mix.

D: Goßartiger Caol Ila! Jeder Tropfen ist sein Geld Wert.

E: A great Caol Ila! Every drop is worth it's money.
    • Nose
D: Zarter Rauch, eine kräftige Meeresbrise, geriebene Grapefruit- und Zitronenschalen, hintergründig etwas Nussiges

E: Decent smoke, a strong sea breeze, grated grapefruit and lemon peel, a faint nuttiness
    • Taste
D: Stark!

E: Whoa! The freshness of citrus fruits, sprays of seawater, perfectly balanced with wood smoke and a pepperiness. All the years in the barrel have added subtile notes and complexity, yet the Ci7 is youthfully fresh.
    • Finish
D: Lang, rauchig und dennoch frisch.

      E: Long, smoky, yet fresh.
