  1. Marko_I did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

The last vintage OA by AnCnoc was great, but this one is still a round better, delicious, full-bodied whisky, the sherry barrel has the upper hand.
    • Nose
"dark" - plum jam, sugar beet syrup, Storck giants, cocoa, coffee - fat & full
    • Taste
spicy-sweet, cocoa, dark chocolate, roasted malt, walnut, light spiciness, nutmeg and woody notes, with a hint of wild berry jam
    • Finish
      long, spicy-sweet, chocolate, some pepper

Fantastic, complex nose where crystal-clean barley and bourbon-derived vanilla are enveloped by warm sherry notes (including roast coffee beans, dark chocolate, glacé cherries, hazelnut praline, poached pears in syrup). A drop of water brought forward hints of a dunnage warehouse and a slight grassy note. Great stuff! Similarly complex on the palate, with the crystal clean barley to the fore, again encased within the warm, fruity sherry notes. A very slight 'edge' (alcohol burn-esqe) I associate with younger whiskies was the only notable flaw, and in a way it actually enhanced the experience with the way it integrated with the sherry notes. Medium-length finish, where again you have both bourbon and sherry cask influences lingering. Excellent whisky, fairly priced, no colouring or chill filtering and a decent strength. What's not to like?!

    Notes from a blind tasting:

a very tasty malt. I think he drinks particularly well in summer because he comes across very fresh. I like it.
    • Nose
At first the alcohol is slightly present on the nose, then it becomes fruity with lots of light fruits, spicy, lots of herbs and floral, grassy notes. Slightly minty
    • Taste
spicy and slightly sweet, lots of light fruits, here again the herbs and floral notes as well as the mint. Later comes a little pepper, but it doesn't stay long. Then it becomes drier and a little bitter
    • Finish
Aromatic finish, lots of herbs and floral notes, a bit of malt and light sweetness, lots of fruit, I would say very refreshing. At the end comes the somewhat bitter, dry one again.

Aroma: the very first moment is a laundry sherry nose, cherries, chocolate, plums in cognac. (Aberlour A'bunadh) furthermore, the aroma is very strong and spicy,
Taste: absolutely delicious in taste, dry, cranberry smelling, sherry character,

A very more-ish dram and well put together. Drinks a little older with active casks but not too active.
A lovely partially sherry matured dram.
The unique mouthfeel and welcomed astringency at the end makes this more complex, compelling and challenging malt like most Ancnocs.
    Not generally a beginner dram.
    • Nose
Dates, plums and candied ginger on the arrival, reminiscent of a lighter Glendronach.
Brambles with light oak spices building to a gentle chai tea.
Rather syrupy with a nice balance between the spice and sweet.
      Vanilla custard and milk chocolate.
Charred oak and a nice spice bite.
    • Taste
Immediately fudgey, a nice big mouth watering presence, the sweet and spice mingle in a nice balance.
Again the chai with the ginger and cinnamon dominate.
    • Finish
Ginger and pepper spice leading to rich dark honey.
      Slightly drying with pleasant tannins.

Very pleasant dram--lively enough, slightly oily.

  10. dramspotter scored this whisky 71 points Connoisseur

An improvement over the standard 12yr but not by much.
    • Taste
      slightly orangey
    • Finish
      short
