"The different component flavour contributors are so much together that initially you struggle to separate them until you spent time with this."

Not a bad young and strong mole, very dynamic and mobile, invigorating, open, nimble, of flaws - excessive spirituousness in the fragrance.
    • Nose
Warm, open, processed noble wood, lemon peel, confectionery notes - curd pastry, fruit jelly; light flower-grassy motifs, mineral tones - drying masonry mortar, raw brick, stone dust; slightly spirtuzen.
    • Taste
Woody with sourness (apple?), Peppery wave, sweetness, creamy notes, bitter herbs, orange, candied citrus, lemonade tones.
    • Finish
Grassy-bitter, spicy with creamy motives, caramel, slightly overcooked rusks, lemonade of Pinocchio, orange candy, dry orange peel.

It's actually fun to try something completely different. This is an example of such. It's not my favourite, but drinking it was still enjoyable. Over serious observers may say that this baby costs way too much and is way too spirity for a 16 year old whisky. The cask must have been rather inactive, and delivering quite some bitter notes. Maybe that is true. But since it's different, I tend to like it still.
    • Nose
Very intriguing. The herbal side, with grass and mint, gives away that this is whisky, otherwise you could easily think it's a fruit distillate that aged a few years in wood. There are different kinds of fruit to be detected: pear, lemon, but later pineapple and cherry. The wood delivers some creamy vanilla. With water, there is an extra green feature: olive oil. Next to that, lime stone and earth.
    • Taste
Rather austere without water. Alcohol, grape seeds, massive ginger and ultra dry lemon juice dominate. With water, it's easier-going, but not completely tamed. Lemon juice and pear drops dominate, with vanilla, grass and malt. Then, bitterness of grape seed, lemon zest and ginger.
    • Finish
Again, grassy, with vanilla, oak spice and lime juice. Ultra crisp.

Some pear, apple, vanilla and cinnamon, a bit spirity. The taste is more farmy and has less fruit.

tasting by SV : Royal Brackla 16 yo 1997/2014 (56.8%, Adelphi, cask #5564, 268 bottles)  Colour: white wine. Nose: bingo. Litres of eaux-de-vies, especially plums and kirsch, then a raw grassiness and quite some wet chalk and limestone. Also cider apples and touches of baker’s yeast, as well as a little mint. Raw and very naked indeed – so far. With water (the viscimetry is huge!): some oak comes through, a little cardboard, a little earth, mashed potatoes and… not much eau-de-vie anymore. It’s very dry stuff. Mouth (neat): again, plain fruit eaux-de-vie, barley water and grass. Very raw and almost new-maky when unreduced, this is a powerful beast. Maybe touches of bitter oranges as well, even artichokes and green tea tannins. This one bites you and will even take your tongue hostage. With water: same, more or les, just a little smoother and more citrusy. Finish: quite long, a little indistinct, kind of yeasty and always very grassy and leafy. Comments: pure, very austere barley eau-de-vie. Maybe not for the modern drinker? SGP:372 - 79 points  02/05/2014
