Closed in 1993 and soon to be revived by Ian Macleod, Rosebank remains one of Scotland's most iconic distilleries. This 21-year-old Special Release was matured in refill American oak and bottled at 55.3% ABV (bottle no. 3579). Biscuity and cereal-driven, the aroma unfolds with citrus cream, pears and a lovely herbal complexity. On the palate, floral and slightly bitter notes intermingle with parsley, barley sugar and a touch of mojito. Minty freshness and lemon zest mark the clean and very elegant finish. A much-missed Lowlander with unrivaled character!

Just as good as Glenlivet 21, no more. Wow guys you are really overrating hyped and expensive whiskies on WB. This is not a really good one and if the relationship between rate and price is positively linear, we don't need notes anymore.
    • Nose
      Vanilla, jasmine, sourdough, honey, pear
    • Taste
pretty like a fruit yoghurt, honey, flower tea, sourdough, lemon, fruit candies, oak & malt
    • Finish
medium length with malt, honey & flower

Superb Rosebank. It's a malt that makes you want to sit down and take the time to analyze it.

A superb mineral side, on chalk, pebbles.
We have candied lemon candy. A little bitter orange, cointreau. A little kiwi.
Light fresh almond. Dried aromatic herbs.
      It's very deep, defined.
    • Taste

In the mouth it is just as clean.
      Light rain water. Wet pebble.
Always this candied lemon. Light basil.
      It is candied, chiseled.
Light dust, pastry cream without sugar.
      Superb tension and balance.

Hard to pin down, really wasn't expecting that ! Its shyness will prevent it from being truly great in my opinion, but it confers this Rosebank an undeniable restrained classiness, with a clear old-school feeling and a beguilling complexity if you're patient. This somehow reminded me of the famous Clynelish BBR #6421, concept-wise.

Quite oddly, the first notes I get are rather industrial, with strange oils and waxes, then maybe some undefined plant-based ointment. With patience and aeration, gets very complex. Very old floral pot-pourri but we're not talking heady flowers, rather little dry meadow flowers. Orange essence, with a light fizzy acidity. Meadow grasses, morphing later on into very complex and unexpected notes of Parma ham. Sure wasn't expecting that ! To me, there's almost nothing at the fruit department here, expect a little transient orange. But I shall not complain because its herbal-industrial restrained complexity is very interesting. Water doesn't change much.

Very nice kick of these little meadow flowers indeed, meadow grasses. Great alcohol integration. We're soon back on these super peculiar industrial notes then, with a strange waxiness. Vegetal freshness, tea, very complex notes upon later sips that I can't seem to describe. Very interesting but again, rather restrained and austere.

Quite short actually. Quite milky and malty, clean, with white tea, dried cut grass.

1610) Rosebank, 1992-2014m 21YO, Diageo Special Release 2014, Refill American Oak, Limited Edition
A distillery not only with a beautiful name, also one of the few that exists at late 18th century, with the original location and equipment gone for good, destined that any replica version in future has to breath without the old soul.
    • Nose
N- Fresh citrus essence brought along chocolate-y malt and scents of floral. Shy tea and earth, but sufficiently lay over the comforting nuances of orange and exotic creamy custard, coconut chendol? Soothing light and breezy, but chirps like a flock of chicks. (90/22)
    • Taste
P- Lush-y mouthfeel, compote of coarse honey and citrus upfront with semi creamy sweetness. Subtle but refine assam-boi at retro-hale. More earthy coal emerged as it breath. (92/23)
    • Finish
F- Medium long, fine oak remains at the tail, with full bloom of waxy citrus coating upfront. Intriguing semi-cream sweetness. (88/22)

B/B- 92/23 Clean, elegant and bright with substance.

A gracious Lowlander, who brings everything, what one hopes for. No daredevil and certainly not for an evening with many whiskys.
    • Nose
Restrained and definitely needs time in the glass. Then fragrant flowery, not perfumed. Fresh lemon balm, buttercups and lemon blossom. Earthy (without moldy, rather dry potting soil) and a bit dusty in the background. The alcohol is not noticeable.
    • Taste
Surprisingly dense and creamy, also here no alcoholic stinging. Grain and vanilla are on the tongue and give off a pleasant sweetness. The lemony fresh note from the nose comes here slightly spicy (not alcoholic) therefore, grated ginger, I think. A typical grassland of lowland, fresh grass, no hay.
    • Finish
long and fresh, the alcohol carries the whisky slowly and persistently into the throat.

Unusually powerful character from a triple distilled lowlander, but it's fine.
    • Nose
Floral. Vanilla, citruses, honey and pear.
    • Taste
Spicy. Citruses, honey, mixed fruit jam, pineapple, malt, pepper and oak.
    • Finish
      Long, creamy, fruity, spicy.

    2015

N: Dense, creamy and floral. ‘Nice’

T: One of those generally good ‘whisky’ whiskies if a little brash

F: All good but fades fast.

C: Good standard malt, but one that may have passed me by had it not been a Rosebank.

    Scores a B- [85]

2016:Tried this last year and though it good but no more. After hearing better things of it, i decided this late 1992 vintage was worth a revisit.
N: Malty-putty, sour mash like the previous Millstone but then opening with notes of cheesecake and some vanilla ice-cream. Theres a subtle complexity throughout.
    T: Sugary>lime=citrus, peppery distillate malt.
F: Long finish includes more sour mash that seems identical to the Bushmills

21yo WB i had previously. So confident was i of their similarity that i took the Rosebank to the [TWE Show] Bushmills stand [much to their delight], to compare them both direct - and the similarities were very fair indeed.
C: A lovely [Bushmills-esque] whisk[e]y with a subtle depth & complexity. Much preferred this, this year.

In part, exactly what you'd expect from a Rosebank - high aromatic perfume notes of the sort that you just don't see in modern
lowlanders. And yet, there was a substantial savoury flavour there contributing unexpected depth.
    • Nose
      FWP, rosewater, pears, toothpaste
    • Taste
Sweet and savoury, chicken korma, pineapple cubes, cherryade

    • Finish

This is the only third original special bottling ("Special Release" or "Limited Edition") from the Rosebank distillery closed in 1993; the older bottlings of this series are: 1. 1981/2007 (25yo): http://www.whiskybase.com/whisky/632/rosebank-25-year-old 2. 1990/2011 (21yo): http://www.whiskybase.com/whisky/26177/rosebank-1990
