Whisky Reviews for Caol Ila 1993 DR

A really delicious Caol Ila, there is nothing more to add to my notes ...

    23/22/22/22 (89 P)
    • Nose
Pale straw shines in the Premium Snifter, on the glass wall sticks a variety of thick and oily "legs". Wonderfully soft peat aroma blows out of the glass, a subtle mineral smoke note joins in while slightly acidic citrus fruits show up and end in a hint of caramelized sugar. The maritime influences are becoming more and more noticeable, a touch of salty seawater, gust, algae, minimal iodine provide the maritime touch. Above all lies a sweetish sugar note with hints of apricot, green apple and lemon ...
    • Taste
Mild flows the first sip over the tongue before suddenly violent smoke, peat and ash spread in the entire mouth and mercilessly stimulate the salivation. Sharpness penetrates through the unrestrained saliva, black pepper mixes with wood sharpness and extinguishing embers, fly ash spreads on the palate, citrus flavors dissolve from slightly burnt wood elements, roasted hazelnuts swim creamy on the tongue. Herb and dark, the second sip makes its way over the tongue, again peppery sharpness massages the tongue, burnt wood aromas settle on the palate, the saliva is massively stimulated again. Chubby heat pulls through the throat into the stomach, a campfire burns down slowly, the glow goes out, fly ash rises ... Herb and dark wood flavors come to bear, once again glues a creamy and greasy film on the tongue, hazel and walnuts from the intense wood tones, dark fruit flavors emerge. Grilled peaches and apricots, hints of raisins and abrasion of orange peel ends in sour citrus flavors, minimal tart grapefruit on the tongue.
    • Finish
The chubby heat sounds, as well as the intense and peppery sharpness. Smoky wood elements still stick to the tongue, oily and greasy, the ashes are only minimally visible on the palate. Slightly salty come to the end again maritime tones to the fore before the tasty finish is coming to an end.

    • Nose
some smoked bacon; dry sour; fresh with citrus notes; something phenolic
    • Taste
      clearly smoke; strong; Herbs
    • Finish
dry; long; minimal bitterness; again clearly smoke / peat

  4. Helgo scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

The nose I feel in contrast to the body still the most exciting ... Then the whisky flattens unfortunately. With a little bit of water all flavors vanish immediately. Without water, however, the alcohol is too dominant for me. However, I appreciate the sticky sweetness, which also brings this CI with it.
The wort is missing a bit. The smoke is very dominant despite the age.

  5. Albaron scored this whisky 81 points Specialist

A sealed whisky, comparatively flat in flavors, barely complex, oak and smoke dominate

    Created during a blind operation.
    • Nose
oily, phenolic smoke, lemon, some vanilla, salty, slightly alcoholic
    • Taste
strong onset, oily, phenolic strong smoke, citrus aroma, some vanilla, oak
    • Finish
      Smoke, oak

  6. Kantenmechaniker scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

The notes were recorded during a blind sample!
    • Nose
Hui, quite a lot of banana at once !, mixed with noticeable smoke, the smoke is more in the spicy direction, like smoked ham, in connection with the banana makes an interesting mix, again and again I have to think of these sugar foams of Haribo, vanilla is definitely there too, but it is very difficult to identify more notes besides the banana
With water: if it had not already been pure banana, I would say even more bananiger
    • Taste
Here, too, much more smoke than in the nose, smoked ham, also again a lot of salt, light sweetness, vanilla, the banana is now missing, alcohol well integrated
    • Finish
Here the banana comes in the background again, the smoke is less, but then it lasts the longest.

  7. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

A clean ex-Bourbon barrel smoker. The age is noticeable to him, the nose is light, but complex and beautiful. In the mouth then quite a peat bomb.
    • Nose
Limoncello, sweet and fresh, then slightly cooked pear. A hint of peat, some marzipan, almost woodfree. With water, the nose is a bit lighter, it adds light maritime notes. Nevertheless, rather a fresh and light nose, little peat.
    • Taste
      strong, smoky, ashen, astonishingly tart.
    • Finish
Ashes, tart notes, menthol, fruity with time, the limoncello comes to light again.

  8. Gloin scored this whisky 91 points Expert Senior

An impressive Islay whisky that beautifully combines citrus and medicinal smoke. A first-rate, boisterous and untamed smoker.
    • Nose
Lemons and smoke, slightly artificial and medicated, engine oil, sweet, grapefruit. The nose is getting better, the longer the whisky has breathed in the glass
    • Taste
The impressions of the nose are confirmed, again citrus fruits are paired with medicinal smoke, after a short moment comes a sharp impression, which is replaced by a light, sweet vanilla note at the end
    • Finish
astringent, strong smoke and bitter oak, citrus fruit, the medicinal impression remains long on the palate, long finish

  9. ASWhisky scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

    tasting note of a blindtasting:
    nose
Much more intense, sharp smoke, charcoal,
    something sweet and something soft

    Mouth:
    Smoky start
The smoke is a bit spicy and medicated
In the smoke is sweet fruit, smoldering charcoal
Very warm, almost hot in the throat

    leaving
    dry, long
    spicy
the finish is the most beautiful thing about him

    by 83 points
    my advice:
    a Caol Ila edit
Last year I gave him 86 points!
