Nose: This is it! it gives me delight! That intense sherry smell. The smell of chesterfield sofa's, tabaco and deep intensity of very much matured in a real sherry butt (the ones which actually matured sherry). Hint of glue too, but very very pleasing!

Initial taste: Sweet, sweet and sweet (sherry sweetness). Then leather, leatherpolish, tabaco. Muscat notes some cinnamon, but not much.

    Body: heavy bodied. Not oily.

Finish: medium - long. Those tabaco notes are joined with the sherry. raspberry and  other red fruits.

Price: I bought it for just over 70 euro's Which is an absolute bargain!

Presentation: as always with The Ultimate: sober but decent.

This is not a simple whisky. You could almost call it matured too long, because the entire perception of oak is dominated. A pronounced sherry-fruitiness and sweetness one looks for in vain. I like it a lot, but a few years shorter maturation might have led to an even better result. A whisky for lovers of oak flavors. The Brennereicharakter is difficult to recognize. Addendum: After the bottle is half empty and the whisky has drawn oxygen, the oak softens slightly. This will make him even better. I change my score from 87 to 89 points.
    • Nose
Sherry, wood, dark fruits, raisins, dried cherries, moist soil, herbs, caramel and tea in the background
    • Taste
powerful, tingling and astringent, relatively light body, black tea with lemon, oak, dry sherry
    • Finish
very dark chocolate and oak, bitterness spreads in the throat, thyme, long finish

    89, almost hitting the 90.

I compared this one to cask 6922 and it's a completely different whisky. None of the freshness and subtlety of that one but a non-compromising sherry bomb. Which isn't a big surprise if you see the difference in colour. I generally prefer this one, but on some occasions it might be the other way around.
    • Nose
A very dark treacly fruitiness like a first fill. Prune, date, dark cherry, cranberry, raisin, cinnamon and toffee. Initially also a little whiff of glue. Only after a while the heaviness turns down a bit and some orange comes up.
    • Taste
Prune, dark cherry, cinnamon, raisin, liquorice root, pepper and mocha.
    • Finish
Prune, blueberry syrup, dark chocolate, cranberry and pepper.

Blair Athol 1988 from Ultimate are all worth buying!

This style of sherried whisky is rare nowadays. I believe this cask held actual good quality sherry before the newmake spirit was dumped in. The sherry cask industry is an awful lot less romantic nowadays.. This Blair Athol is a perfect example of how sherried whisky should always be. Fruity, chocolatey, leathery and above all a solid integration. Some cons; the amount of oak on the nose and the strength of course. That's about all to criticize. If you can find this under €200, it's a recommended buy. Thanks again for the samples at fair pricing Rob!
    • Nose
Ah yes, oldskool sherry where leather and tobacco play a prominent role. Quite an oak influence as well. We have orange oil, dried apricot, raisin, overripe banana, cherry and rose water. Then the darkest of chocolate, manuka honey, caramel, sultana and licorice. Further on the oak I already mentioned, cinnamon, roast coffee bean, tobacco, leather, vinegar and damp cellar. A little peppermint note is hiding in the back too. A very good example of an '80s sherry cask with its leathery and damp notes. That's exactly how I want my sherried whisky to be, except for the amount of oak. It screams a little too loud on the nose. Everything else is spot on.
    • Taste
Lovely, a little thin but despite its watered-down strength still muscular enough. Starting off with orange, tangerine, raisin, fig and sour cherry. After that there's moccha, chocolate brownie, sultana, salted caramel and licorice. Further on honey, creamy malt, tobacco, leather, balsamic vinegar, roast coffee bean and a decent amount of oak. I expected this to be more oaky and drying. Nope! A well constructed and behaving complex malt, which leaves little to desire for sherried whisky fans. A little more oomph aka cask strength would be the icing on the cake.
    • Finish
Medium to long. Fairly nutty here with dark chocolate, treacle, dried apricot, banana bread, roast almond and a weird perfumy note.
