Today I once again had my personal PLV winner in the glass.
    • Nose
      90 90
Fine butter almonds, dark fruits, rum raisins, a touch of marzipan and some spicy oak
    • Taste
      93 93
Rumrosins, roasted almonds, marzipan, walnut, sherry and of course the spicy oak
    • Finish
      92 92
The rum raisins and marzipan fade first. Almonds and walnut take the upper hand, carried by the spicy oak. Then the Rumrosines will call back shortly.

      Conclusion:
Over several years I was allowed to enjoy this malt again and again. Still I'm thrilled again almost a little bit of this great malt and again confirm my originally made years ago rating of just 92 points (90/93/92). Of course, he does not come close to the Family Casks, but I could stock him for just under 60 €. Only small criticism: he is already dangerous süffig :)

  2. dRambo scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

fruity - but also spicy - intense - a great classic Glenfarclas - so much better than the standard range
    • Nose
Orange scent - orange oil, orange peel and a little mint, peaches, a hint of cherries, strawberry jam, waxy spicy well-bound oak,
    • Taste
Strawberry jam, oranges, sparkling spicy, oily, slightly astringent oak, warming, sherry sweetness, dry - astringent, cocoa, milk chocolate, pepper, vanilla, the oak flavors are complex and always on the move, sometimes tingling - intensely vegetable - then again something bitter, then rather peppery spicy - fruits with nice mild acid form a fruity opposite pole
    • Finish
Mint and orange oil dance on the tongue, tart oak tannins dress spicy - slightly bitter, slightly spicy, spicy and dry

Delicious. I like him. A nice, dark winter whisky with neat PLV.
    • Nose
A great nose with MonCherie. In addition spicy oak and the alcohol underlines everything. A musty, swampy note is also there. Exciting. With a little time more dark fruits come. The alcohol evaporates and even the Modrige disappears into the background.
    • Taste
In the taste then a full broadside oak. Cherries again. Again, the alcohol is back, but very pleasant. In addition dark spices and chocolate.
    • Finish
The finish is long and again very oaky. With chocolate, dark sherry and cherries.

  4. StyrianSpirit scored this whisky 93 points Expert Senior

The intense interplay between sherry, dark berries and oak flavor is more than pleasant. A really dense sherry malt of 20 years. That's how you like Glenfarclas - and with an issue price of 60 euros (!) It was a real price-performance miracle.
    • Nose
      93 93
Sherry, pleasant freshness, oak, dark fruit. Very crispy. Tight.
    • Taste
      93 93
Pleasantly thick sherry, dark berries, some plums, oak planks. A full arrangement; looks more intense than 46%. The wort becomes stronger in the mouth; In addition to the herbs, there is also a little damp forest soil.
    • Finish
      92 92
The long finish is determined by the oak and the spice and forest soil notes; before sherry and dark fruit report again.

[September, 2019] I had a dram during a blind tasting of the FoSM club...

...that is an average-only 'farclas with a minor sulphurous touch which is not distracting. Most probably a mildly sulphured cask slipped through the quality control of this batch. Easy quaffable stuff, but there are much better 'farclas releases out there.
    • Nose
      87 87
The colour is amontillado sherry and the nose offers a modern sherry profile with minor whiffs of sulphurous notes that are bearable (like sulphured raisins). The sherry itself is fine but not very bold and the 'farclas malt easily shines through. After some breathing the wooden notes grow stronger but they never dominate.
    • Taste
      88 88
The taste is that of an average moderately sherried modern dram, easy to quaff but not spectacular (do all whiskies need to be spectacular, I doubt). The sherry and the malt-driven flavours are in balance and the sulphur hides in the background, luckily. Water is not recommended if you are sensitive to sulphur (it grows upon reduction).
    • Finish
      87 87
The dram arrives warming and a little coating on the palate with a minor drying feeling (the typical sulphurous touch). The finish is of medium length and adds more spices which are very welcomed to enrich the taste. There is even a chocolatey note if you chew the dram long enough. A minor drying feeling develops towards the end which indicates the sulphur is still there.

The bitter chocolate in the finish and the intense sherry aroma characterize this whisky.
    • Nose
      (88)
      - sweet dark fruits, apricot cake, almond biscuits, oak, sweet stollen, marzipan
Milk chocolate, almonds, walnut, shortbread, apricot jam, powdered sugar
Sweetness goes a bit back, English wine gums, gooseberry cake with cream, light citrus fruits, currants, raspberries
    • Taste
      (92)
Apricot, sherry, dark dried fruits, oak
    • Finish
      (92)
a lot of dark chocolate, which is getting sweeter and melts in the mouth. Mocha with a lot of sugar

      very long

  7. Marko_I did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

Delicious, robust, intense, not round, elegant, a direct, honest whisky, priced with formerly ~ 60 € very fair, as usual at Glenfarclas.
    • Nose
starts a little dull (you could say it smells like it was cloudy ;-)), then very fruity, mushy-fruity, overripe, peated fruit (orange, peach, pear ...), jam, some acid .. on the edge a little caramel, tockenes wood, cinnamon
    • Taste
a little more orange marmalade, more chocolate and spicy, nut nougat cream, marzipan, pepper ... yes longer in the mouth, the darker the chocolate and warmer the hotter
    • Finish
      long, dry, cocoa and warmth

N: Nutty sweetness, candied sugar, leather polish not intrusive, wet socks, plum compote, hidden lemon and orange fruit, nice nose, very balanced T: fruity sweetness, peppery or spicy on the barrel, nutty, the aromas of the nose are again, oak emerges but not dominant F: medium long, bittersweet, espresso notes, light dryness paired with covered tongue, fruitiness comes back, interplay of flavors

Not overloaded for the color, tree sap, light fruits, a few dark ones, thick nose, thick in the mouth.

Much less bitter than the successor models.

  13. LDB scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Almost reminds me a little of the old Dailuaine 16yo flora and fauna. A bit too dry for me to find it better. But overall successful.
    • Nose
Tart, spicy Oloroso nose, slightly nutty
    • Taste
Very dry, but smooth, with lots of walnut oil, lots of dried apricots and flavorful honey.
    • Finish
Very dry in the mouth, with toasted almonds that are not sugared. Quite long and astringent.

  30. Gloin scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

A nice honest whisky that does not try to be more than it is. The age is noticeable, although certainly not the very best barrels were used. A whisky to drink and enjoy without having to deal with it intensively. Nevertheless, it shows a neat complexity.
    • Nose
The whisky starts very sweet, with a lot of sherry. Still, it's not as over-crowded as any other sherry whisky, including Glenfarclas or Glendronach. Fruity, oranges, lemons, a touch of strawberries, herbs, even a hint of mint
    • Taste
A rather light mouthfeel is followed by a medium onset. It's sweet again, but on the palate the whisky is spicier than in the nose. Oak shows up, provides a counterpoint to fruitiness. The interaction is reminiscent of Seville oranges.
    • Finish
In the finish, the oak is then dominant, displaces the fruitiness. The bitterness is only modest. medium

  31. Kaltduscher scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Very mild. Fruity. Sweet and sour at the same time. Citrus fruits. Oranges. Easy sherry. Ripe raspberries. Some oak.
    • Taste
Significantly more sherry, as the nose suggests. Fruit compote. Oak. Citrus fruits. Almonds. Oily.
    • Finish
Long. Mild entrance. Dark chocolate. Mocha. Bitter orange. Raisins. Currant cake. Drying. Pepper.

  32. Hemdl scored this whisky 78 points Connoisseur

Well, what should I say. A nice sherry malt, but has a lot of air up. A few more first-fill barrels might have helped to increase the intensity of the whisky after such a long barrel maturity. So remains in my eyes interchangeable and at best neat malt.
    • Nose
First comes out a clear alcohol note that covers everything. Then, of course, the typical Glenfarclas sherry, after a while then also vanilla, unripe fruits.
Not so impressive in the nose, certainly not as full of sherry flavors, as one might expect. There were probably a lot of refill barrels in use.
    • Taste
Sweet sherry, with light fruit flavors (green apples and grapes), almonds. Very mild. Not as intense as I had hoped.
    • Finish
Extremely mild and soft, medium long. Very slight bitterness, which is probably due to the barrel maturity. At the end but sweet and slightly dry finish.

orange, fudge, herbs and lemon - 7up
    • Finish
      orange, suryp and pepper

  34. KayMeertens scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
Plum, cherry, caramel, bramble, apple compote, almond, raisin and vanilla.

    • Finish
      Plum, leather, toffee and chocolate.
