The taste is pretty simple but neat with hints of nice sweet barley again followed by vanilla, dried bananas and apricots.
    • Finish

  4. Collegiate scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Solid and musty with a bit of that Springbank brine. A really well made drop, but just leans a little too much on the tropical fruits in the finish for my liking. If you enjoy those tropical elements, it’s a must have and you can easily add a few points on to my score.

  5. Boletus did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

More reminiscent of a Lowland whisky that was allowed to mature in a maritime climate. On closer interaction with the malt, however, one recognizes its origin, even if the brandy is cleaner than the rest of the distillery portfolio. As you would expect from ''Springbank'' this is a high quality whisky that is fun to drink.

Similar to Oban 14, Balvenie 12, and Clynelish 14. But better I think.

Super waxy and oily mouthfeel. Certainly more “industrial” than standard SB as there’s nothing here to hide it. Balanced tropical fruit with black pepper. Notes of nuts, heavy cereal, vanilla, and pomelo peel.
    • Finish
      90 90
Longer than expected. Woody. Peppery. More industrial. On the dry side. A hint of bitter almond (don’t worry, it’s not cyanide).

N: Light on lime/lemon juice, melon, smooth yoghurt, genteel barley juice, no char/phenols – clean soft yet never thin.

T&F: Creamy barley, lychee, brioche,… plenty of tasty curiosities along the way through.

C: The 10yo is benchmark Hazelburn, as it is for Springbank, Ardbeg, Talisker, Ledaig, GlenMo,… I find it doesn’t necessarily get better as it ages, just different.

Lots of coconut oil followed by barley, orchard and tropical fruits, gooseberries, damp earth, minerals, lychee juice, lemon, wet leaves. Plenty of farmy notes too. Nice, waxy texture. Wow, this is super interesting without compromising on deliciousness! Superb whisky.

N: tons of primary tropical fruit. ripe banana and mango. Slightly sweet candle wax. Sweet cereal grains. A lot of vanilla. A touch of curry powder? It reminds me of a delicious sweet rice pudding with fresh mango slices from a great Thai restaurant. Incredibly pure: big on fruits and cereals with little of that dirty Springbank funk (that’s not to say it isn’t there: there’s the slightest hint of machine oil). A disappointment to some, but not this one…

P: as one would expect from the nose. Big ripe tropical feuit, cereal sweetness. Now a slight, creeping metallic note. And greater hints that this was distilled in Campbeltown: a touch of machine oil and wax. Also a hint of smoke (in an unpeated whisky)? Oily palate and big on flavor at 46%. Alcohol not noticeable. Flawless.

F: long. Here comes the machine oil. Chalky minerality. Over it all: cereal sweetness and mango essence. It’s also kind of smoky?

Very, very, very nice. But perhaps it will disappoint those looking for a typical Springbank malt.

The core expression of a malt which everybody has to try, no matter the preference. Main asset here is the oakiness felt troughout with both the nose and the palate. Slightly immature, though. Needs a bit of time after opening or wee bit of water to open it up but those usual tips dont help a lot with this one. Definitely more acceptable than the 8-year old which nobody needed. Overall, good value for price.
I just hope thay start making older only-oak versions on a regular basis.

Creamy on the nose of banana and a hint of vanilla. In addition, a light, tangy, sour fruit (fresh, light grapes, mandarins?). Overall very light and lively in the aroma, reminiscent of white wine.

Fruity and sour again in the mouth (kiwi?). In addition, an association after wax.

In the finish then more on the spicy-bitter side with a little oak and coffee. In the background now more dark fruity like dark grapes.

Nice Everyday Dram, which is still a bit young and rough, a few more years would have made it a little rounder and even creamier.

    Grade: 2+

Hazelburn 10, 46%. A 2018 rating which I do need to revisit. Subtle aroma is very well put together. Creamy estery pear crumble. That's it it smells like pear crumble with cream. Good. Taste is clean and creamy, juicy and fairly oaky all integrated, crisp, quite oaky. Decidedly woody but still has balance. Crunchy barley note is reminiscent of standard Speyside bottlings. Ok 3.3/79

Considering how many varied Hazelburn’s I’ve enjoyed and admired over the years, it’s hard to believe this is the first bottle of standard Hazelburn 10 I’ve ever bought for myself.

N: Everything a whisky should be, there’s every aroma you may well pick up in & all around the distillery site in Campbeltown. A style that melds so well with bourbon cask maturation, we’ve mild chocolatey grassy barley juice with my key favourite – the quince jelly profile note [also found in Auchentoshan], that helps define and identify triple-distilled Hazelburn no end. As the bottle goes down, I tap into the distinctive toasted mash-sweet heavy ‘mineralic’ [thanks Matt] lemon-sour phenolic oily caramel character. Yum!

T: There’s absolutely no gimmickry with Hazelburn. It’s a big yet [organically] composed barley spirit on [more] quince jelly and sour~sweet lemon [& juice of]. With a consolidated sooty/farmy < dry-wood peaty smokiness, it shifts up and down through many toasted waxy barley-faithful gear changes.

F: The broad yet relaxed spirit doesn’t stop flowing. We see more phenolic sour interplays over savoury barley mashy malty sooty chocolatey,.. stuff. One could write a book, and yet, it’s all in a day's work for the Springbank distillery.

C: [Still] a cracker, and crazy-affordable, it makes me wonder how other whiskies [at this price and provenance] get a look in? Strangely, it’s the one the converted seem not to chase.

Not a very memorable expression of a Campbeltown whisky. I made my way through a bottle and could not find anything interesting to be honest, just few, slightly melony aromas.
It is a well-made malt though, hence my rating acknowledges the craftmanship.

Light in colour and thin, but far more rich and complex than one could expect. Its vanilla and apple nose opens up to a slightly oily palate with lot of apricot fragrance.
A full body is balanced by a wide spectrum of fresh fruit notes, for an enjoyable tasting experience, even for non Campbeltown addicted.

Comparing this head to head with the Springbank 10, this comes out as the surprise winner for me. Where the Springbank edges it on the nose, the Hazelburn is much better on the palate. This is crisp and austere, oily and brilliantly shows that good bourbon barrels are all that this spirit needs.

The Springbank 10 is bigger but also dirtier, with some off notes from less than stellar sherry casks.

Yes, that's good. The change from sweet, sour and tart entertains and the 46% suit him well.

I like (without the direct comparison) the Springbank 10 anyway, because it is a bit dirtier and the smoke fits well there.
    • Nose
Honey-sweet on the nose, light fruits with citrus notes, slightly grassy and herbaceous, but in the foreground the fruit sweetness with a slightly acidic touch.
    • Taste
Nice intensity. Fruit and sweetness paired with citrus-fruity acidity, then it turns into the more spicy, springbank-typical, slightly dirty, and ends on a sweetly bitter note

  42. gallfux did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

A really good standard. That's what Springbank is used to. Less "dirty" notes from memory than with Springbank 10. But you can already tell that it comes from the Springbank distillery. In addition honey and fruits, which even have a slope into the tropical. But also oak, which adds flavor to the malt.

    • Taste
In the mouth then more of everything, a lot of spice, orangeate, even some smoke, the distillery's origin can not be denied.

We begin with an ideal looking sighter, one I’ve not had before. The nearest I’ve got to it is a 10yo Rundlets & Kilderkins batch which I loved, but of course, it’s a totally different beast.

N: A light nose but the quince & blackcurrant jellies are pleasingly present.
T: A drop of water is highly recommended. Tasty!
F: An example of excellent composition.

    • Nose
Sweet and fruity - tropic fruits like ananas and papaya; after a while dry notes are developing - dark demerara sugar and a little bitterness. The oak and with it the vanilla is in the nose.
    • Taste
Very fine and uncomplicated. It's a taste of vanilla and sugar. Oily and warming. On the palate there are dark fruits, which can also be found in a sherry cask matured whisky. The sweetness is delightful.

The nose was young, but not disturbingly so. On the palate and finish, this is simply marvelous. But unpeated? I think not.
    • Nose
Sturdy, creamy nose on breakfast cereals, white fruit, paraffin, frying oil, litchi from a can and vanilla. Underlying you’ll detect the typical characteristics that you also find in Springbank such as chalk, jute and ship’s rope. Soft and inviting, though clearly young.
    • Taste
On the palate, I immediately think of Springbank as well, but without the peat (note to self: doh!). Very creamy, spicy, waxy on paraffin, lime, chalk, (a lot of) ginger and something of cod oil. A salty note. But claiming this is completely unpeated, seems a bit off the mark. Could it be residue in the pipes? I do get an unmistakable peaty tang on the nose – which is very good, by the way.
    • Finish
The finish is medium long, mineral and waxy and – surprise! – quite smoky. It dies a mildly bitter death.

pleasantly intense and round, but one-dimensional I like the light smoke, which I clearly notice (non-smoker). Officially, non-smoky malt is used - maybe residue from the fires for Springbank and Longrow?

we all know, that this should be unpeated, but if you have ever stood in the kiln of springbank after they dried the barley for a longrow you get an idea of how peat aromas find their way even into a hazelburn.
very sooty and ashy in the first two minutes. then a fresh and mouthwatering fruitiness emerges mostly on lemons, grapes and peaches. a very fine acridity. icing sugar.
      very good!
    • Taste
fruity and superclean. mineral, lemons, cereals, a very light maltiness. waxy mouthfeel.
sounds like a simple whisky, doesn´t it?
    • Finish
medium to long, very clean and appetising.

Beautiful classic whisky from the bourbon barrel. Straight, no frills and good!
    • Nose
Salt or actually much more a clear mineral note! Vanilla, pineapple, slightly earthy.
    • Taste
      Salty, peppery tingling, ginger, slightly bitter, floury and dry, somewhere hiding fresh green apple. Again pineapple, dried pineapple to be precise, vanilla in the background;
    • Finish
Medium-long, dry, again salty and mineral at the same time, a pleasant oak note.

    Wow!
    • Nose
Erinnert sehr an den Laddie Ten, nicht wegen des leichten Rauches, sondern wegen eines Anhauchs von Babykotze.

Da ist aber auch sehr süßes Holz, milder Honigduft.
    • Taste
Im Geschmack eher würzig, vollmundig, sehr angenehmes Aroma. Etwas pelzig, trocken, fast wie Holzspäne.

Jetzt ein Hauch von Vanille. Der wird immer besser...
    • Finish
      Mittel, fruchtig.

well made (as it is with all the springbank
    lineup), but
    nothing special,
similar to a vanilla floral speysider
    like ancnoc
    or balblair
    • Nose
      sweet, grassy, floral, musk, vanilla/almond
      extract, light earth, farmy,
      oily butter, hints of citrus
    • Taste
      grassy, citrus, butter, spicy alcohol,
      lime, slightly lime peel bitter
    • Finish
      short-medium, grains, grain
sweetness, lime peel, grainy bitter, grass/nuts and
butter at the back with hints of orange/lime followed by lightly roasted sugars

Devilishly effective! Why pay more ? Enthusiasm 4/5
    • Nose
Fruit syrup, sweet, more and more malty. Is there really peat?
    • Taste
Full and ultra fluid. Sweet spices. Fresh fruit, vanilla, coconut.
    • Finish
Not very long but slightly exotic for the fruitiness.

    Surprisingly complex! :)
    • Nose
Elegant. Flowers, unripe bananas, kiwi, waxy apples, white chocolate, caramel and orange peel
    • Taste
Sweet peat, tobacco, caramelized apple, cocoa, honey, vanilla, pepper and chili
    • Finish
Medium length, nectarine, ash and bitter oak

    • Nose
Light fruits such as orange, pear, grapefruit and lemon dominate the first nose. Some honey is added. Vanilla and caramel complete the rather light and fresh-looking aroma.
    • Taste
Strong, voluminous, sweet and fresh start thanks to the 46 volume percent. Very oily, creamy mouthfeel. In addition to the bright fruit notes from the aroma to crystallize exotic fruits, such as mango and papaya added. The lemon and grapefruit make for a slightly acidic impact. A light honey note and a little milk chocolate make themselves felt. Some spice can also be perceived, which is increasingly powerful, but not too dominant.
    • Finish
Medium long, sweet, light fruits continue to dominate and a fine spice passes the dram. Overall, very round and balanced.

Very nice whisky, I think it is 100% ex-bourbon because of the vanilla and tropical fruits in the nose. I think this is how a good Lowland or Irish whisky should taste like.

I was surprised by this one. It's a very busy bee and quite complex.
    • Nose
Heather, grass, some flowers and pistachios. I was expecting a lighter style, but it comes out strong. Some unripe banana as well. With water there's some more kiwi notes and the flowers come out stronger.
    • Taste
Orange zest, lemon, hazelnut, some tobacco leaves perhaps? With water there's more fruitiness, the banana from the nose returns, accompanied by red apple and slightly burnt sugar.
    • Finish
Some orange zest, somewhat bitter oak, burnt sugar and a fruity note, perhaps nectarine?

    • Taste
Peach again, grapefruit, barley, brown sugar, papaya, some spice with little peat, more citrus, honey, toffee
    • Finish
Medium length, bright fruits, spicy tannins, some peat remain

Good quality white chocolate, vanilla, cakes, mature red apples.
    • Taste
Vanilla, a lot of apples, sugar, cake dough and some cacao.
    • Finish
Same as the palate. Very well balanced, and a whisky on the “sweeter side”. Still offers quite a lot of ‘oomph’, despite it being very sweet.

An easy and pleasant whisky, well done, not complicated for a penny. An aromatic wealth not huge and a low intensity, but the pleasure is still at the rendezvous. A good daily dram.
    • Nose
A first nose rather malty. Dry notes of cereals, wood, nuts and nuts. Not very engaging at the moment. At first sight, alcohol is well integrated. With a little opening, everything refreshes, with chlorophyll, fresh mint, but also vanilla, honey, wax. Then come notes of fruit, including peach, pear and apple but it is rather here on fruits not very ripe. A rather nice flowery side is pointing the tip of his nose. I also find some saline notes. With a lot of openness, the dry side disappears in favor of more creamy notes.
    • Taste
a fairly light texture. A rather vegetal mouth, with notes of malt. White fruits, like pear and apple. We remain on this impression of unripe fruit, a little dry with a very discreet taste. Honey is present in the mouth, like vanilla, grapes. The creamy side that was found with aeration is more present in the mouth, with particular notes of milk chocolate.
    • Finish
Sweet and long with notes of malt, fruit and milk chocolate.

A balanced malt. Not complex, but with character.
    • Nose
Bright fruits, the lemon outweighs. The smell of a beeswax candle.
    • Taste
A beautiful, fruity-fresh goose full of heather honey. Also on the palate are exotic fruits, where no longer the lemon from the nose, but rather papaya and mango are to be found. A touch of milk chocolate
    • Finish
A medium-length finish, beautifully balanced, reflecting the nose and palate.

Rich in flavour, our Hazelburn 10-year-old is awash with scents and flavours that will delight.

    Tasting Notes by Springbank
    • Nose
Stewed pears and baked apples are followed by honeycomb and fudge notes.
    • Taste
A lovely and rich whisky with vanilla and honey flavours, liquorice follows with a refreshing zestiness.
    • Finish
A refined milk chocolate cream finish that is oily and chewy.

    costaud daily dram. Excellent!
    • Nose
massepain, vanille, fumée, terre, humus (très finement tourbé). sève, levures, champignons. Dense, complexe, rond. Epices aromatiques (laurier, girofle), gingembre, miel
C'est long/malté/épicé. L'eau arrondit les angles et met en valeur la vanille, le miel, la bruyère. C'est très agréable.
    • Finish
une amertume fine et agréable clôture la bouche

  87. KayMeertens scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Compared to the 12-year-old (52767) this one is fruitier and cleaner, less peaty and oily. A bit fresher I'd say. For people who are not completely addicted to the Springbank profile this one is probably a bit more accessible. 85/86.
    • Nose
      85 85
Citrus, peach, orange, almond, caramel and a small whiff of peat smoke. The light spice of a white beer. Then the sweetness of wine gums, especially when comparing it to the 12-year-old.
    • Taste
      86 86
Tropical fruit such as peach, grapefruit, blood orange and papaya, now with a considerable amount of peat. Some caramel and a little vanilla.
    • Finish
      85 85
Peat, peach, mango, caramel and a little chocolate.
