Incredibly interesting whisky. On the one hand, you can’t drink much of it, but on the other hand, I applaud standing for such a level of bouquet and such a powerful and complex versatility.
This is not a light, rounded whisky, these are complex and heavy rum spirits, one dram a night is enough.

    • Nose
Rum, thinner, woody sherry, red plum, blue cheese, a little pine needles, balsamic, very hot either with alcohols or with spices, cognac vanilla, citruses, ginger, bitter and white chocolate.
      Water reveals copper
      Saturation: 10 out of 10
    • Taste
Taste is incomparable! This is A'Bunadh!
Continuation of the nose, power and assertiveness of the entire range of fragrance. Tart astringent, red plum, a mound of dark chocolate, something cheesy again, lemon juice, leather, bright spices and a bunch of spices like cinnamon.
It is difficult to describe in one phrase the unique taste of the A'Bunadh line, it is a rum sherry-salty red plum with something cheesy and coppery. Licorice acid.
      Saturation: 10 out of 10
      Sweetness: 9 out of 10
    • Finish
Very long and persistently tart, sherry-sour and very astringent

    COLOUR: dark amber (without dye)

    - a very intense sherry whisky
    - the high filling strength leaves a lot of scope for
    Dilute and experiment
    - this batch is one of the best batches I have done so far
    tried (5 so far)
    - if you can still get it for less than 70€ =>
    strike
    • Nose
full nose with sweetish sherry aroma, fruity, apple, grape / raisins are clearly noticeable
    • Taste
Strong, voluminous attack, a lot of sherry, grapes, raisins, becoming dry, very powerful in the back palate, very voluminous, the 60% is clearly noticeable
    • Finish
      long, spicy-fruity finish;
damn long fruity dry aftertaste, stays in the mouth for a long time, with a slightly spicy - alcoholic taste, some oak remains

A great batch. Compared to # 54, it is much more pleasing, more harmonious, less bitter and less astringent.
    • Nose
      88 88
Diluted to 54%. Well-integrated alcohol. Ripe red fruits. Raspberries, cherries, currants, also pickled plums. Vanilla, strong oak spice, raspberry juice, raisins, marzipan, bitter almond aroma, a hint of mint and leather.
    • Taste
      90 90
Powerful start, nice and oily. Heavy oak, pickled cherries, raspberry froth, crumbled vanilla sticks, leather, tobacco.

Medium-long finish. Vanilla, beautiful oak flavor, blackberry wine.

A'bunadh is to my opinion "bang for your buck". Not expensive, when you wait for special offer mostly round 50 euro. Lovely dram for that price! To my opinion, A'bunadh, have one in your collection!
    • Nose

At first I thougt well 83 will be it. The after few drops of water and some rest there it was, wow, lot to discover here.
    • Taste
      89 89
As with all A'bunadh a mouth full of taste.
    • Finish
      88 88
I like the medium long finish with typical sherry notes.

  13. Whisky Hamster scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

One of the better casks of this new, less sherry-heavy, style of a'bunadh. Well put together, great sweetness and no off notes among the always powerful abv. Works well with water, becomes creamier and more pleasant (and I won't water down all a'bunadh just b/c of abv., some work better at full strength for me!). All in all this batch is miles better than the dreaded batch 40. Bravo!

  14. NorthCoast500 scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

A fine dram of Aberlour Abunadh, that gives you a typical Aberlour sherry bomb flavour profile. Dark red fruits, oak and a big spice boost.

Did this one in a h-3-h with batch 47 en 52. This 49 is the smoothest, more on fruits and less on leather. Also more floral than the others, and although quite similar, the best of the three.
    • Nose
      89 89
Fruity, red fruits, raspberry, also some floral elements, later on some slight hints of leather, but also washing powder. Only a little alcohol, also some orange.
    • Taste
      90 90
Surprisingly smooth, full taste, only a little tingling. Floral, light red fruits, berries, raspberry. Some orange and honey as well.
    • Finish
      89 89
A lot of blue berries now, smooth. Full taste, long finish. A bit drying mouthfeel.

    • Nose
Thick sherry sweetness. Sweetened raisins. Some leather and blueberry liqueur. A bit of tart wood and gingerbread spices. The alcohol is very restrained. Tart blackberries in the background.
      Very nice nose.
    • Taste
Slightly dry, tart-sweet start. The alcohol is now developing properly. Bizzling in the mouth. Sour cherries, hints of tobacco and bitter walnuts. Nutmeg and blackberries. Has something of mulled wine and Christmas market.
    • Finish
Rather long. Slightly light fruitiness in combination with tart, dark berries. Then becomes nicely spicy and brings dryness with it.

Review of a bottle opened in 2015 (score 91 points in 2015).
The nose is the strong point. Absolutely magnificent for a whisky lover aged in sherry barrels.
For the price at the time, it was an absolute MUST. What made that Aberlour arrived in the big leagues.
    • Nose
      93 93
      Sherry and chocolate.
      A lot of chocolate.
Alcohol that can be tamed by adding water.
      Deep and greedy.
    • Taste
      85 85
A little dry and alcoholic. Probably the result of a certain youth.
      But the chocolate is there.
    • Finish
      90 90
      Long. Spicy. Nuts. Cocoa.

  20. Portfolioman scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Very appealing whisky, qualitatively beyond any doubt, if it is enjoyed pure.
Absolutely drink undiluted, otherwise he clearly loses!

    • Nose
      87 87
Sherry, heavy, sweet raisins, peach compote
    • Taste
      88 88
      without water:
strong, concise alcohol, creamy, raisin-sweet; little oak, tends to pencil shavings

      with water:
loses significantly; peppery-spicy alcohol note, sweetness recedes, young whisky with a metallic taste
    • Finish

      warm, sweet, long lasting

    Nose:
He did not like it so much. The nose very closed, in the mouth too alcoholic. But the whisky opens up with water and becomes a nice young sherry barrel whisky.
    • Nose
surprisingly shy in the beginning, then sweet sherry, liquorice, dark fruits, spices, quite alcoholic, but still not very responsive with the flavors. With water, the nose opens up and becomes nice and round.
    • Taste
strong, warm, a lot of sherry, some oak, some licorice, then a bit tart. Very warm. With water, the oak comes through stronger, even a little salt. The whisky becomes very intense.
    • Finish
still pretty warm, then comes beautiful oak, some gingerbread spice, almost a little Christmassy. More sweet than dry.

A really interesting dram and one that changes over time if you let it open up. It is quite a complex dram but you have to spend time with it and really search into the depths of what it has to offer.

If you love a sherry whisky, then you love Abunadh.
    • Nose
Be careful with the strength, as the nose is very lively. Dried fruits, candied fruits, nuts, grassy notes oils and old wood.
    • Taste
Chocolate, nuttiness and fruit cake. The sweetness from cooked fruit (stewed plums or maybe prunes). This can take a lot of water. The water brings out the wood notes, oranges and enhances the sherry hit.
    • Finish
Even with a lot of water, the finish is long and sherry all the way!

    • Nose

A very tasty and flavory sherry bomb. And a bang for your buck.

    Tasting note from August 2017.
    • Nose
Strong sherry nose. Prune, figs, orangey notes, dried fruits, a bit of varnish.
    • Taste
Punchy, sweet, fruity and spicy. Caramel, candied fruits and wood strawberries. Coffee and chocolate notes.

      Long, spicy, drying.

A hot, dark, fiery mess ... a few months of oxidization and adding lots of water does almost nothing.

  33. Calmar scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Frankly, I was expecting a classic "sherry monster", sweet-raisin, but the patient was surprisingly dry and completely not raisin (except for light notes in the fragrance), which in general can not be attributed to shortcomings, rather to pleasant surprises. Reduction in a few centuries has helped, I will not say that it has become everywhere and immediately better, but it also did not become worse, let's just say - turned from a different angle, opened new faces. In the end, it's a good, high-quality sherry pier of the barrel fortress at a reasonable price.
    • Nose
Dense, raisin-prune, fresh, raw, boiled condensed milk, toffee, mushroom, moldy notes, damp earth, generally slightly clamped. With water - the fragrance opens, it becomes sweeter, more dried fruit notes, a tree appears, light carpentry lacquer tones, acetone.
    • Taste
Oak, spicy, a wave of pepperiness, however softened with creamy sweetness, burnt sugar, boiled condensed milk, dried apricots, dried apples, on the whole quite dry. With water - sweeter and more rounded, more cream tones, but the oak does not lag behind, lemon notes appear.
    • Finish
Warming, dried apples, dried apricots, light lemon tones, burnt biscuits. With water, ginger is shown and biscuits disappear.

Powerful, nothing but the nose. Strangely, it evokes certain characteristics of bourbon: oak and vanilla. We also have red fruits (cherry?) And nuts. In the mouth, very well integrated alcohol, thick, unctuous, sherry expresses itself in full lungs. Fruity retro-olfaction.

    Enthusiasm 4/5

    • Finish
Slightly dry finish, the alcohol brings a lot of time, schmackig, the chocolate remains

  37. Xstream scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

Probably the best Aberlour I've had. Even though I got quite bored of their whiskies.

This one has a syrupy hint of coffee, caramel and cacao (like those toffees with cacao powder inside), mixed with fruit like ripe peach, apple with sweet berries and raisins.
Mouth has great balance of sweet and bitter. Finish is medium dry with the same profile but now the chocolate became more dark with some bitters and something like eucalyptus and menthol is added to the mix.

Tasted in comparison with batches 50 and 52, where this was my favorite. Just a little better than batch 52, but far better than 50.

Sweet sherry and cherries (dark fruits) on the nose. Together with hints of lemon, raisins and leather.

On the palate a full thick balanced dark body with chocolate and oranges.

The finish is medium long with a little bitter note from the chocolate, but in a good way.

Does need some water, then fruity, forest fruits, but also a dark side of chocolate, espresso and dried fruit. In the mouth idem, spicy too. The aftertaste is long and fruity, I even taste something of eucalyptus, delicious.

After a pretty bad start into the batches #40+, Aberour redeemed themselves with batch #49 and from what I heard batch #50 is pretty solid, too.

Nonetheless it must be said that batch #49 tastes younger and less intense sherried than many older batches (<35), but on the plus side there is none of the musty-ness that a couple of older ones suffered from.

All in all a big recommendation, this is a very good whisky!

    Aberlour a’bunadh (Batch 49)

    60.1% abv

    Score: 89.5/100

These a’bunadh write-ups are some of the most popular reviews on the site, so while to some it may seem almost like overkill to keep knocking out batch after batch of ’em, we’ll keep doing it as long as people want to read.

It also doesn’t hurt that they’re tasty beverages, and that sitting down for review sessions with these Aberlours is far from ‘homework’.

Each time I settle in to score up a new a’bunadh I generally try to taste at least two or three different batches side by side. It helps the subtleties take on a more pronounced difference, and ensures that the scores are kept in line with one another to a degree. Let’s face it: these are very much just tiny variations on a theme. A point of comparison helps keep the reviews on the up-and-up.

Batch 49 is a little bit of a black sheep from recent versions I’ve tried. Seems to me to be much softer of a dram. Perhaps we’re looking at more refill butts vatted into this one. Not sure. What I can say, however, is that the rather biting acerbic profile that has characterized the past handful of batches I’ve tried seems to have been softened here. To great effect.

Hard to believe we’re already at Batch 49, but so seems to be the case.

Nose: We’re back into the more fruity side of a’bunadh here. The last batch I tried was 47. That had some more savoury notes. Here we have deeper red jams and dusty, dunnage warehouse. More floral notes than normally found in a’bunadh. Maraschino-rich fruitcake (a bit a tasting note cheat, I know, but true nonetheless). Cinnamon and a touch of mint. Well worn leather. A little almond. Baked apple. Dark wine gums.

Palate: Nice delivery here. Sweeter than that B47 I mentioned, and lacking all of the bittering notes. Ooey, gooey fruits sauce or spoonfuls of mixed berry jam. Ever use your teeth to pull off leather gloves? Y’know that leathery flavour that lingers? Yep…that’s what I’m getting at. Baked apple with rich spices. Quite plummy and tangy. Juicy and mouthwatering throughout.

Thoughts: Gotta be honest. This is a’bunadh…but it’s not. The florals are a surprise. As is the relative softness. Especially in contrast with the asskicking abv. More restrained and simple than I’m accustomed to with this malt, but absolutely no less wonderful for it. And no matter what impression you get here, make no mistake. This is big fucking whisky.

Nose: Sherry!!! loads of sweetness in here. Chocolate and vanilla. Very full smell. Some coriander, nutmeg and garam masala. Hint of cirtus.
    The smell is very nice!

Initial taste: Bombastique, sherry, wood, chocolate. Deep brown sugar. Nutmeg, candied orangepeel.

    Body: big robust.

Finish: longstanding thick layer of sherry infused orange. very nice, some five spices after a while too. but fades a bit quickly.

    Price: excellent!

    Presentation: Quite decent.

Comments: a 100% buy if you see! absolute great. and a 100% proof that some whisky's really improve with water!

Oh man, if all NAS could be like this! Bare in mind this is a 50 euro bottle. It's exellent value for money, the finish is absolutely great.

Nose; pretty fruity/floral, oranges, some chocolate, toffee, raisins, plums, leather (couch). Bit spirrity, I guess due to some younger stuff in de bottle.

Taste; sherry all over the place, red fruits, sweet toffee, oranges and spicy, peppered.

Finish; Very sweet, leather, lots of red fruit. And very, very long! If you end with this one it's still present when you wake up!

Comments; great stuff again by Aberlour, highly recommended in this price segment.

Rich and loaded with fruits whisky with dynamic taste and long blooming aftertaste. On the other hand, young, spirity and lacking depth.

I like this one a little better than the previous batch I've got open, #44. Their profiles are very similar though.
    • Nose
Very fruity right from the start, like rose hip. Rose hip tea even. Cranberry, toffee, orange, pepper and a little yellow raisin. With water the toffee gets stronger.
    • Taste
Heavy toffee or fudge. Again rose hip. Pepper, cranberry, mocha and orange.
    • Finish
Toffee, mocha, pepper, rose hip and cranberry.

With water (a max of 40%): Sweet Popcorn! Salty honey, at least more oak. Every time a new adventure with many hidden paths!
    • Nose
Spanish oloroso Sherrybomb! Almost dried glue on a carpet, raisin, vanilla, plums, currantpie, apricots, hazelnut, medizin and mushrooms.
    • Taste
Brown sugar, raisin, vanilla, plums, currant, sweet figs, dates, a touch of rum on the edge and a new leather note.
    • Finish
A long and dry finish. Dark chocolate, mocha, touch of mint and a bit spicy.

The nose is closer than previous batches, but also feels less alcoholic.
It needs some time.... Opens up slowly to a sweet smell of honey and sherry. Very clean and fresh.

The alcohol is very well integrated, this puts previous recent batches in a different league.
It is sweet and smooth, very chewy. Very sherry driven, little malt or other cask influence is dominant. Some might say it is boring, but if you like the profile, as I do, its vey well made.

The finish has a slight sherry sour note, that balances the sweetness and keeps the dram fresh.

With water some malt does come out, and everything else is bigger and better. Definitly test with water!

Tasted side by side with batches 46 and 47, and as the rates reflect I agree it is the best of the 3 (and probably one of the better batches of the past 3 years).
