Nose: wow, another league here, powerful sherry, coffee, red berries, old leather, bog oak, humidor box, hint of earth and smoke. Overwhelming power and complexity.

Taste: covers your tongue and slowly melts, red berries again, leather, salt, peat smoke, tobacco, chocolate.

Finish: long one, strong tea, touch of smoke again, polished silky oak. Maybe not so complex as nose and taste.

Overall: just delicious, powerful sherry side is balanced with oak, peat and tobacco notes, so don't get over-sherried monster.

Good but very disappointed compared to other tasting of this Yoichi 20yo.
    Bottle tired? Bad batch?
    • Nose
Liquorice, cold ash, sherry, leather, slightly lemony. Very small point of sulfur.
    • Taste
On the palate it is soft, slightly watery, on leather, wood, ash.
    • Finish
In the final on the ash, the cheese, the sulfur.

  6. Dram Dracula scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

I purchased this about 4-5 years ago in Tokyo for around $230 and I thought that cost a bomb. Well, good luck even finding this nowadays.
    • Nose
Rainy day in a buddhist temple, with incense in the background. There is also fragrant wood. Also something sour or is it pickled? Weird, but not off-putting.
    • Taste
Salty, a bit oily, spicy, peaty, cola candy, and always this beautiful incense/fragrant wood in the background which I also find in Hanyu and Chichibu, even though it's a bit more subtle here.
    • Finish
Nice finish, long. Perhaps you can taste "Wong Lo Kat" in the aftertaste (a sweetened, canned, Chinese herbal tea). A hint of high-mountain oolong tea also.

    Nose:-
Intense heat on nose, be patient and let your senses adapted to the
beefy puffs. Slightly shy to reveal initially but a monster when fully
unleashed. Intense sweet fragrant of dried monk fruit with whiff of plum
bouquet. Nose deeply, light decay note reveal, resembling peaty whisky from Campbeltown
    and very Longrow.

Palate:- Creamy and flavoursome. Cabbage rawness with nugmet sweet and
pungent. Masculine and rush of flavour, eye-watering spicy dram.

Finish:- Gloriously long. Well rounded and high on mark. Loud and solid
dram packed with loads of precious components. Gum numbing. Chewy.

With water I would say the bitterness is more evident but it is still very easy to drink.

This is really good and at 52% I do not think water is needed, recommended.
    • Nose
Coffee, strong sherry, treacle toffee, varnish, smokey.
    • Taste
Coffee, prunes, dark chocolate, oaky bitterness but in a good way, very smooth, elegent.
    • Finish
      Medium length, smooth.

    Blind tasting of Usquebaugh Society.
Apart from the heavy glue (I wonder how come this is not mentioned in anyone's notes), this is really good stuff. Glue is just a disturbing factor to me, for those who don't mind glue or even enjoy it this is a stunner.
    • Nose
Lots of glue. Raisin, bramble and mocha.
    • Taste
Raisin, dark chocolate, glue and a little sulphur.
    • Finish
      Raisin, mocha and dark chocolate.

Superb, recommended - what can I say more.
    • Nose
Sweet with notes of sandalwood, lotus flowers and tropic fruits (lychees, pineapple and citrus fruits). Some fish oil as well. A lovely nose.
    • Taste
Starts sweet with honey, then becomes spicier and spicier. Still fruity with a whiff of smoke in the background. Very elegant, delicate and well balanced.
    • Finish
Long, becoming oaky and smoky with liquorice and leather.

  15. numen scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Faint, not the most pungent here. All the same, there is beautiful integration. Pear, quiet apple and lemon, graphite. Oil (putty, I like this). Ginger. Stones and something almost coastal, but not fully. Sandalwood in the far rear, with just the slightest of spice and salt. (with water) Amps up the aromas. Moving here to caster sugar, sweet spice, soft and sweet wood. Candied walnuts and even a sweet smoke.
    • Taste
Yes, silky. The oak is so perfectly integrated. It shows up, and it's always in check and extremely balanced. Honey and honeyed. Graphite, light ash, and then some rancio. A little more sour fruit. (with water) A little more candied here as well, more rancio and walnuts, and delicious. Rather linear. Swims well, loses just a hair.
    • Finish
Some residual sweetness along with the graphite, lemon, and smoke - all subtle and dessert-like. This is really lovely and graceful, just a bit more subdued and linear than I'd have expected. Still, extremely well made, extremely enjoyable, and excellent.

Great whisky with excellent balance. Delicious taste, elegant and rich. One of my favorite Japanese whisky, beside Hibiki 21 und Yamazaki 18.
    • Nose
Some delicate peat up on front, strong tobacco, sherry, plum sauce, rich and sweeter than the 15yo, malty and earthy tones. Very complex nose.
    • Taste
Big, oily, compact. Rich, apricots in brandy, deep honey sweetness, a lot of chocolate. Little smoke. Very, very delicious.
    • Finish
Long, sweet, peppery. Smoked cherries. Lasting long on coffee and toffee.

  18. WhiskyNotes scored this whisky 91 points Expert Senior

It's a delicious and uniquely Japanese profile, but for some people it might be too extreme in its earthy savouriness. I love it though.
    • Nose
Big notes of cedar wood up front. Cigar boxes. Tobacco leaves. Old leather. Nice to see there's also an estery note (nail polish) but this fades away quickly. Dark forest fruits remain. After that, some earthy smoke, burnt cake and a little tar. Hints of dried mushrooms and soft spices. Incense as well. Light matchstick notes from the sherry. Excellent complexity and typically Japanese.
    • Taste
Punchy (bordering on pungent). Again quite savoury and leathery. Walnuts and roasted pecans. Deep, earthy peat smoke. Pepper, liquorice, anise, a pinch of salt. In the background a strong bitter-sweet harmony of burnt fruit cake and dark chocolate. Slightly sourish tobacco leaves.
    • Finish
Very long, smoky and chocolaty with traces of dry oak.

Excellent! This I really like - goes on the buy list.
    • Nose
Rich fruit and nut with a layer of furniture varnish.
Sherried no doubt - christmas cake.
    • Taste
Wow! Big spicy hit with an immediate surge of carameloranges followed by toffee. Malt in abundance and then sherry and nuts
    • Finish
Long, malt, malt and more malt. Wonderfully clean and then a nice dose of sweet toffee and sherry notes.

    what a nose!!!
    • Nose
INTENSE! Seaweed, salt & diesel (like a walk at a fishing harbour), pencil shavings, nut-chocolate, water adds some light smoky and fruity flavours
    • Taste
spicy, chewed grape seeds, malty-sweet, sherry, fresh, seaweeed
    • Finish
      spicy, liquorice, sweet
