Whisky Reviews for Caol Ila 1982 Wy

8 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 89.69 points

  1. checkpointuk scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

http://kaypingers-whiskyblog.de/frontend/fullarticle.php?id=311 Color: pale gold Nose: Waxy, fruity-sweet and phenolic. Dull aromas of peat, cardboard & leather, beeswax, salty-gray smoke and lime juice with green apple. Taste: Soft, very spicy and ultra salty. Lemon extract, smoky cedar wood, slightly bitter and decorated with subtle peat and coal and pencil leads. Sweet honey with grapefruit and a lot of vanilla. Finish: Medium length - fresh, slightly green and sweet. Honey, apple, vanilla, sweet peat brew, ashes and dry wood. Remark: All in all good, but a bit unspectacular. Rather a "newfangled" Caol Ila, who misses the clenched peat structure of its predecessor. 89 points N: 90P / G: 89P / F: 88P

  2. Monsieur Dram scored this whisky 91 points Expert Senior

Nothing to say. Everything is in its place. It's perfect, it makes traveling. We say "pfouaa, what is good", and it does not happen often today. So, yes, if you have a bottle of this Caol Ila, congratulations. If you do not have one, try to taste it anyway, it's worth it!
    • Nose
powerful, but fine and delicate. The smoke is discreet to give way to very maritime aromas: oysters, seaweed, anchovies. The whole is very salty and, with the opening, we would almost think of tapenade (olives, capers, anchovies, lemon). Added to this are some hazelnuts and almonds as well as hay notes, bringing some drought to this Caol Ila 1982, which becomes more complex with the arrival of medicinal notes (camphor, antiseptic). In the background, we guess a fruity side, very discreet, but that plays its role perfectly.
    • Taste
frank and well chiseled. It is quite dry overall with a good smoke, hazelnut, almond, and a good dose of salt. Some notes of apple peels and lemon bring acidity, notes of aromatic herbs (thyme, bay leaves) and medicinal complexity, eucalyptus and mint of freshness, pepper relief and fruits (apple, pineapple) sweetness. In short, you'll understand, this is complex, rich and really well done.
    • Finish
long notes of smoke, shells, salt, pepper, mint, herbs, lemon. In short, it's long, it's good and we do not want it to end.

Nice but would have scored more with a longer finish

Nice easy drinking Caol Ila at 46%
    • Nose
Brine, lemon, fresh crisp peat, a little bitter apple.
    • Taste
Very fresh & citrusy but it is also quite waxy on the tongue. There is a little blood orange and some lemon sherbet but also a little bitterness from the sherry
    • Finish
Medium length and sweet to the finish.

Slight disappointment, not enough punch IMO. This dram doesn't rock.

Caol Ila 1982/2014 ‘Smoke on the Water’ (46%, Wemyss Malt, hogshead, 255 bottles)  I‘m not sure Wemyss are the first to nickname a peater ‘smoke on the water’. One must take risks! (But they may have chosen this name at… around 4 in the morning, while listening to Ian Gillan and gang.) Colour: pale gold. Nose: these whiskies are evident, they do not need to argue, you cannot do anything against them. Magnificently elegant, very racy, superbly balanced. Seashells, fresh walnuts, small lemons, almond oil, pu-erh tea, brine, fresh butter. Perfect combo at an oh-so approachable strength. Mouth: oh my how good this is! Again, the strength is perfect (cask strength is not always the best choice, in my opinion), and the flavours, the flavours! Olive brine, lemon juice, two anchovies and one sardine, cigar smoke, green apples, oysters, one drop of cough syrup, a little grapefruit… Coal Ila ages wonderfully and gracefully, and this is just another proof. It’s just like that American actress in House of Cards, Robin Wright. Please excuse me. Isn’t she American? Finish: medium length, super, briny, ashy, lemony and smooth at the same time. Comments: £120 a bottle. You read that right. Google is your friend, we don’t do smelly affiliation. SGP:467 - 92 points.
