It is okay but not in the same category as the 001 batch, which was just brilliant. Also there the essential virtue was not versatility but a perfect balance of the narrow core. This one is a bit too young for me and not half as well balanced.
    • Nose
At first, especially first months after opening the bottle the youth of it was a bit too much: homemade brew and yeast. But after that the smell I am used to associate these with came to the fore: taffy, malt and cereals, dried figs and apricots. It's compact and straightforward, rather concise.
    • Taste
It's really closed and quite bitter, really needs water. When it opens up there is honeyed grain, malt, taffy and some chlorine.
    • Finish
Pleasant malty toffee. Not very long.

If 2023 were the standard for cask strength (CS) standard whiskys, it would be a pleasure drinker's dream.
An old bottling (before the end of 2015) of this Glengoyne CS.
I've only had a Glengoyne CS once before and it was really bad. It's not this one at all.

Starts out like a good sherry monster without tartaric acid, but on the palate it's too many percentages for me.
With a little water comes more of the typical Glengoyne fruitiness, but it doesn't get as thin as today's Glengoynes.
If all standard CS for less than 100 euros were that good today, I would have more sherry whisky in my portfolio.

For me between 88 and 89.5 points. Much better than expected.
    • Nose
      89 89
      88.5
Intense sweetness of sherry, cherries, light wood spice and overall very rich. But what is important: hardly any tartaric acid, so not just wet barrels.
I like it very much for a standard CS (better than, for example, the Glendronach CS Batch 10).
    • Taste
      88 88
Again, a good mixture of lush sweetness and at the same time beautiful spice. Good harmony, hardly any acid and comparatively much leather and dark wood. For a pleasure whisky, that's still too many percentages for me, but diluted by 10 percent, I like the change into the fruity. For 89 points too hot without water and still good with a lot of water, but not as intense in aroma.
    • Finish
      89 89
      88.5
Good, warm and full mouthfeel. Exactly what you would expect from such a whisky at best. Slightly dry at the end and therefore at least medium-long in the finish.

A well made Glengoyne. A bit youthful and pierce but the distillery character shines trough. Full on orange peel, fudge and chocolate sweetness and quite some spices and bitter wood. With some water, and you don’t have to be careful as it can handle it, this whisky eases down and makes things more enjoyable.

Unfortunately, only shortened Stammtisch notes were available, it was very massive and tasty in itself, but a bit lacking in character.

    • Nose
      Colour:
      Amber

      Nose:
When pouring already came a nice grape aroma from the glass. Look what happens in the glass ...
A bitter Sherry scent comes first. Very fresh and impetuous. Fresh sour cherries, peach and a little wet steel. Then come hazelnuts, a little nutmeg and paprika. Has something of pepper chips. Behind it is orange and lemon tea.
    • Taste
Tingling, spicy start. Then it gets rather fruity. Am there again with peach and apricots. Honey sweetness with vanilla follows. The typical sherry flavors are there, but not really intrusive. Also in the taste a bit bitter Nussigkeit. Marzipan, subtly milk chocolate. The second sip I still have a nice, fresh sour cherry. A creamy, nutty mouthfeel. Has just something of hazelnut liqueur with pepper. And I also swallowed a fruit fly ...: D
Sour citrus notes come at the end and clean up the field neatly from the back.
    • Finish
Medium. Espresso. Then the nut again. Then a certain honey sweetness occupies the entire mouth.

  10. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Many sweet sherry notes in the nose. Figs, fruits, orange peel. Sweet, tasty, but in the nose
a little harmless. In the mouth again very strong at first, typical sherry notes, a little sulfur, toffee, spices. Very fine aftertaste on spices, dried fruit, a hint of tobacco

Spicy (pepper, curcuma, coriander) and salty, mildly sulfured sherry, toffee, raisins, dried apricots, dates, honey, leather, quite vegetal.
    • Taste
      85 85
Full on flavour attack, needs some water to tune the initial alcohol bite down somewhat. Honied liquorice, fudge and butterscotch, spicy, raisins, dried fruits like apricots, quite some black pepper.
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium length: a little honey, dried fruits with a juicy feel, liquorice, spices like clove and mild wood bitters.

    • Taste
Full bodied, strong, very light pepper, creamy mouthfeel, sweet, vanilla, honey, caramel. Some oranges as well.

  20. larswehmeier scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
First strong tingling in the nose due to the high alcohol content. Needs some time and air in the glass until it opens. Then it gets really nice sweet. There are caramel, vanilla and sweet biscuits. This is then gradually mixed with a light fruitiness. Perhaps sweetest grapes or raisins. The officially announced banana I do not think so right away.
He remains spicy, even after the nose has got used to the alcohol. This is probably the European oak noticeable. It becomes fresher and lighter with water. The sweetness gives the fruits more space. The sherry character becomes more obvious. At the same time something milder.
    • Taste
Lovely sweet and warm. Creamy texture. Almost liqueur-like. The alcohol of course pushes well, but is not too strong. For the color I would have expected, however, much stronger Sherry tones. He barely shows oak and remains surprisingly light overall. With some water, he is still sweet, but similar to the nose now fruity. He will be much easier again. It show raisins. Despite the addition of water, the alcohol is still surprisingly strong and with a lot of heat.
    • Finish
Medium. Warm on the tongue. With a very light touch of oak.

    • Nose
then add a breeze of raisins and pineapple and then increase the alcohol%. with renewed slight touches then the sherry notes appear beautiful and intense
    • Taste
First very creamy and balanced on the palate. then comes a nice vanilla sweet with dörrfrüchte to it. A nice malt note joins then very angehm with the sharpness of the alcohol.
    • Finish
The spicy and the malty remain pleasant and long on the palate.

About the whisky: Glengoyne was founded in 1833. It is a highland distillery, although half of the distillery is situated in the lowlands. Distilled in the Highlands, matured in the Lowlands so to speak. Glengoyne is owned by Ian Macleod Distillers Limited and is therefore one of the few independently owned distilleries in Scotland. If you don't like NAS whiskies, Glengoyne still overs a wide range of age stated whiskies: 10, 12, 15, 18 and 21 year old whiskys are readily available.
    Category: Single Malt Scotch Whisky
    Distillery: Glengoyne (Highlands)
    Price: 0-50€ (40-55€ in Germany)58.2% ABV
    Chillfiltration: No
Artificial Colour: NoNose: Strong arrival with some alcoholic notes. Dark dried fruits, you can taste the sherrycasks. Some strawberry and maybe currant with some sugared cherries in the background. Last but not least: a lovely vanilla note.
/with water: Sweet notes take over. Fruits, almost artificial ones and great smell of vanilla. I really like the nose!Taste: The alcohol is quite dominant in the beginning. I think I will add water later on. Strong influences of sherry with rasins and plums. A lot of bitterness from the casks.
/with water: Pleasant and it opened up. Sweetness with cherry and a lot of berries combine wonderfully with the vanilla notes. The texture is great: creamy and mild.Finish: Still strong and pretty long. Oaky notes and bitterness remain. Missing some complexity.
/with water. Again, like nose and taste the finish likes the added water. The oakyness retreats and some nice vanilla notes appear. Think of "oaky vanilla".
Overall Thoughts: No, this isn't a very old whisky. I think there are some old casks in the mix, but some young ones as well. The whisky shows what I love about cask strength: I like adding some water, some might like it without any. Some might want to add more... well, everything is possible with nearly 60% ABV! In addition, this dram shows a nice combination of a good spirit and a quality sherry cask maturation. Definitely worth buying!

Unfortunately, the alcoholic note outweighs too much (even for cask strength and diluted with water), possibly the malt is just too young. Unfortunately not my case.
    • Nose
directly one has a very strong apple aroma in the nose; sweet whole milk chocolate; anything spicy (maybe cinnamon?); Lemon and honey; Vanilla and marble cake; a clear alcoholic note
with water: the apples are a little weaker, but oak comes and it is even sweeter
    • Taste
very sweet, but also a clear alcoholic sharpness
with water: apple and banana; Oak with a slight bitterness
    • Finish
medium; again clearly alcohol; a little light oak and bright fruits
with water: the apples from the nose are back

Also good value for money, but 1 point lower in my book compared with batch #2 as it seems a bit more spirit driven.
    • Nose
A bit shy first, but reveals itself later. Toffee, pear drops, vanilla, seems to be less on sherry than batch #2. Honeyed, roasted nuts, banana and Dutch appelstroop.
    • Taste
Seems to be a bit spirit-driven. Honey, toffee, marzipan and roasted nuts, pepper. With water, it improves, again this Dutch appelstroop comes up.
    • Finish
Good balance of sweet/bitter/sour. Pepper, herbs, rather grapefruit skin than tropical fruits, honeyed cereals.

A very fine example of Glengoyne, although not the classical sherry monster, with a more balanced profile. Well worth the price tag.
    • Nose
A nice combination of bourbon and sherry influences. Starts with butter, wet hay, loads of farmy notes, dung, barn and nicely transforms into the fruity punch with apples, bananas and pears.
    • Taste
More fruity than the nose would imply, blackberries, pears, prunes and figs followed by subtle toffee and caramel notes.
    • Finish
Medium length, slightly spicy and oaky, but pleasant overall, makes you wanna reach for the glass again.

The sherry and high-powered alcohol strength work very well here. A
well-balanced, medium complex dram with an excellent value for the

    • Nose
Beautiful refined nose with lots of sherry, but not overpowering.
There's fruitiness coming up with peaches, apricots, strawberry and
gooseberry, along with creamy vanilla sauce. Quite a lot is going on
here, toffee, orange peel with nutty notes, and black pepper spice in
the background. The alcohol by no means is pungent but very well
integrated in this wide range of flavours. A rich and gorgeous nose!
    • Taste
Bold, intense, warm. Creamy balance with lots of fruitiness. Sweet
sherry again, burnt caramel and roasted almonds. Then spiciness is
coming through with ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and cracked black pepper. A
perfect combination of sherry, fruits, and spices.
    • Finish
Warm and medium length finish. Creamy, sherry, and a fruity nuttiness with a dry end. Sticks on your tongue, mouth-coating. WITH WATER: Gets softer and creamy. Still very toffee-driven, custard,
more strawberries coming through. Stays sweet and well-balanced with
      peppery spice.

Delicious Glengoyne – I am mostly
charmed by the duality between the nose and the palate. Around 45 EUR, which I
    find very fair. Thanks, Fred!
    • Nose
The nose is very sweet on toffee
and butterscotch with a high influence of sherry in the shape of overripe
banana, roasted and sugared nuts and dried fruit. Reminds me a bit of rum,
actually. Milk chocolate and a leaf of mint. Caffé latte. But mostly sweet on
      toffee, like I said.
    • Taste
      Powerful, peppery attack and
immediately very sweet. The sherry is a lot more outspoken now. Sweet malt and
some spicy oak precede all kinds of fruit like raisins, Sevilla oranges and
figs wrapped in dough. Some pipe tobacco. Cherries.
      Nice!

I do like it a lot! Quite some sherried whiskies tend to be kitchy by too strongly referring to the all the christmas associations. This one doesn't. Hole different story. Adding water opens up the spirit, but take care not to drown it.
    • Nose
beautifully refined nose for a NAS, sherry, rum or even armagnac soaked raisins and other dark earthy fruits like figs and dates but also some boskoop apple, overripe bananas, leather and well integrated oak

Nose: dark and heavy. Lots of sherry. A similar smell is in GlenDronach cask strength and BenRiach cask strength. Both sherry and is referred to as ripe banana's, which I don't get. Hint of oak.

Initial taste: Sweet stuff! quite some alcohol burst. Sherry sweetness. With water some malt shows up and a little oak.

Body: medium, just a lot of alcohol which has the flavour. With water settled a nice thin layer of oily stuff gets on the thongue

Finish: Medium-long. Quite some sherry which keeps coming back. And a little citrus comes in.

Price:Very decent and cask strength (so it's 1.5 bottle of 40%abv)!

Presentation: unfortunately no age statement! And quite a bit of marketing blablabla, but no colouring and non-chillfiltration makes it up.
