    Gummi Bears

I recently was offered the possibility to try no less than nine Ledaig from Gordon & Macphail’s Connoisseurs Choice head-to-head, all distilled between 1990 and 2004 and bottled between 2011 and 2017. Well, that was an opportunity I could not pass up. Let’s give those a go. This is the Ledaig that was distilled in 1998 and bottled in 2014. It matured on Refill American Hogsheads.

Oh, yes, good nose. Very sweet on a truckload of vanilla upholstered with some young apples, lots of citrus fruit and gummi bears. Underneath is a layer of cold ashes and a hint of rubber boots. Not really dirty nor very peaty, but pleasant all the same.

It is surprisingly soft on the palate, mildly smoky and a tad alcoholic. Again very sweet. Barley sugar and some farmy notes. Again quite ashy, almost sooty, but very pleasant if somewhat simple. Nothing wrong with that.

The finish offers up some more citrus, dry smoke and lots of sweetness, but is rather short.

So far the Ledaig on American oak perform better than those on sherry casks. In this series at least.

    Notes from a blind tasting.

It hides its age and its maturation, I blindly did not recognize a refill sherry pre-filling of the barrels. Otherwise rather one-dimensional and not very complex, but neat.
    • Nose
      83 83
Cold ashy smoke. In addition, citrus, cooling freshness, tart apple, rubber abrasion.
    • Taste
      84 84
Unexpectedly soft, cold smoke, with a distinct malt sweetness, citrus.
    • Finish
      81 81
Rather short, sweetness and citrus fade quickly, dry smoke still remains in the mouth.

    • Nose
Extinguished campfire, burnt lemon, a little mint. Sour apple rings. A touch of diesel.
    • Taste
Smoke, lemon cookies, vanilla. Dry earth, some ash, rather short.

The influence of the refill sherry is very limited in this Ledaig. It's a rather restrained one anyways, it feels a bit 'muted' although it has most elements I like in a Ledaig.
    • Nose
      85 85
Medium dry peat smoke, some motor oil and salty maritime notes. Green olives and a some faint fruits follow: pear, cherries and sweet pineapple candy,
    • Taste
      86 86
Medium peat smoke and a dirty/earthy edge: burnt rubber and compost. Some oysters, vanilla and citrus fruits (lemon, tangerine) save the day.
    • Finish
      86 86
Again that typical not too heavy but drying peat smoke. The rubber notes reappear, just as the fruity notes : tangerines and cherry. A slight waxiness coats the mouth.

Interesting farmy nose, not quite as intense as Kilchoman. Cow stable, straw and hay. A little cold smoke (just faint), some ham, pears and unripe pineapples. I also find a whiff of salty Seabreeze by the ocean (could this be on the Island of Mull?). Taste: WOW!!! Ever had a farm in your mouth? Incredible. Me like… Quite unique profile. Very smooth but a little thin. Some wet wood, cold smoke and bonfire ashes. Any fruits you ask? Well…Gooseberries! Water tones down the nose a lot, some citrus notes come out though. On the palate we get more smoke. A coal pile and more cold ashes. Not many animals left but interestingly the texture gets chewy! Definitely worth exploring this with water. Ends medium long and a little dry, nice lingering aftertaste of musty warehouse. Well done Gordon. Well done McPhail. A Whisky that will give you a new experience every time…

Tasted 19/12/2015 in a tasting with a Gordon & MacPhail Connoisseurs Choice line-up.
    • Nose
Nicely peated with hints of rubber. Fresh fruit (green apple, pear) and beeswax.
    • Taste
Very nice! Surprisingly sweet (marzipan) and nicely balanced with a tobacco peatiness. It also has something citrussy (lime).
    • Finish
Quite long and lingering in which the tastes of the palate continue. At the end there's a faint hint of menthol.

This is not really my style of whisky, but it is one of the better Ledaig expressions I have drunk so far. The typical character of the Tobermory comes through more powerfully here and the smoke has dropped a bit further into the background.

    • Nose
A sweet, slightly sour and fresh whisky with notes of soft smoke, green apple, currants, pineapple, dried apricot, a hint of rubber, minerals, earthy notes, banana, hint of oak, butter, honey, beeswax, some pepper, olive , cereals and brioche
    • Taste
A rich, fresh and sweet whisky with notes of marzipan, lemon peel, plum, wine vinegar, orange, grapefruit, white pepper, butter, hint to tabac ash, smoke, licorice, a hint to maggi plant, milk chocolate, honey, brine and green olives.
    • Finish
A fairly long and slightly drying aftertaste with notes of honey, fresh herbs, citrus, soft smoke, salt and a hint of wine vinegar.

Campfire smoke, nice sweet, fruity, apple, pear, fresh, olives, some chocolate. Everything very harmonious .. delicious.
    • Taste

decent smoker, nice aroma with unexpected smells, in the taste but a bit spicy, at least 46%, rather more, touch on Ledaig but can also be Caol Ila or Laphroaig
    • Nose
Blind tasting! Sweetish smoke, young pears, campfires, olives, elderberries, then it becomes more medicinal and phenolic, then suddenly, suddenly, cocoa, caramel
    • Taste
rough and pungent, pepper, then a little musty, gum, nutmeg
    • Finish
glowing, ash and smoke, warms for a long time, harsh and a little bit sweet, oak hardly comes through

    Distillery: Tobermory (Isle of Mull)
    Distilled: 1998
    Bottled: 2014
Bottler: Gordon & MacPhail (Connoisseurs Choice)
    Key Type: Refill Sherry Hogsheads
    Alcohol content: 46%
    Price: about 55 €

My expectations: I've had some good Ledaigs in the glass lately. I should be surprised if this here from the house G & M would disappoint.

    Color: bright gold

Nose: ... Hossa, there is rubber, wet rubber like a dinghy or a swimming cap, I would almost go so far and bring a sweaty gas mask after discontinuing this into play ..., the other peat smoke and herbs ...

Taste: The gum is only in the nose, on the tongue I have something that would taste so, if you lick a smoker. He is quite mild and sweet, I have to think of drops from the role of my childhood. In the background are again herbs, which after a while remind of Maggi, lovage, very tasty ...

Finish: Relatively short, sweet and with smoke. I was on the water, he is good as he is.

Conclusion: Another worthy representative of his kind, the nose should not be for everyone, I like them, I like Malts with character. The short finish is the only criticism of this beautiful Ledaig. 85 points

Pretty bottle: an interesting alternative to Islay. It is also a double-sided whisky: a little austere to the nose, gourmand in the mouth.
    • Nose
Fresh white fruits (green apples, white currants), slightly oily and bitter notes (green olives), cereal scents (brioche), honey (beeswax), spicy (pepper); a touch of Spanish smoked ham on the finish.
    • Taste
Smooth and greasy mouth taking volume and amplitude: sweet notes of riper fruits also becoming citrus (oranges), spiced with white pepper, with an oily dimension a bit bitter and austere (olives, lime), finally subtle ashy notes of tobacco background.
    • Finish
Long enough on ashes sweet, spicy, gently astringent and slightly spicy, with a touch of liquorice.
