- The first aromas from the nose are blackcurrant and blackberry. Very delicate. Like a bourbon but with a less pronounced vanilla. Sawdust that will be a constant until the final. On the palate, creamy and supple. Do not really do it 46%! Delicate and spicy. FInal long, with a beautiful persistence of fruits and spices. It reminds me of the Copper Fox Rye for wood and Johnnie Walker Gold like blends for flexibility. Only the length in the mouth "proves" that we are dealing with a single malt. Enthusiasm 4/5
It has been almost two years since the Auchentoshan Virgin Oak was introduced. Not too long ago the second batch was released. You will understand that I have no other option than to try this one as well. Do I hear some nasty people whispering ‘someone has to’? Very funny. I gladly sacrifice myself (and put a glass of the first batch next to it for comparison).
It takes a while for the nose to open up. The first thing I smell is grainy wood. Then apfelstrüdel and chocolate with praline filling follow. Peel of recently peeled mandarin. Candied orange rind. Cinnamon and some nutmeg. Becomes beautifully creamy. It even gets something bourbonny. Rye bread and vanilla ice-cream. Good nose.
Creamy body. Nice, mildly pricky arrival. The spices speak immediately. Nutmeg, pepper, candied ginger. A light bitterness from the wood. Becomes quite fruity. Everything from the nose, but in twofold. Add some pineapple from a can. A slice of kiwi. The chocolate from the nose is gone, though. Good stuff.
The finish is medium long on bittersweet touches and loads of warming spices.
I find this batch as good as the prevous one. My only point of criticism is the price. A NAS whisky at 85 EUR? That is a bit much in my opinion.

Vanilla, seasoning is more, freshly sawn wood (so joinery) becomes stronger, light pear is more, Haribo bear come, slightly red fruit (cherry?), Leather comes easily, sweetness comes to an end

On the one hand nice vanilla, maple syrup, oranges. On the other hand, too many bourbon flavors for me, very oaky

- This is clearly from the same stable, flavour-wise, as the very much cheaper 'Virgin Oak' - but pumped up on steroids. Tried as part of our whisky club - Spud's choice - tasted blind. very distinctive, very different. Four of us, each chip in £20 and take it in turns to buy a bottle up to £80. The buyer gets to keep what's left at the end of the night. It had a good reception all round - and I subsequently picked up a bottle of the Batch One from an auction. I was happy to pay £56, simply because for me it was a different and interesting dram.
Rich and full bodied, spiced marmalade and a difficult to describe sweet fruit with unusual spices – subtle cinnamon takes the lead, but perhaps with mace threaded in too. A touch of marzipan and bags of oak.
Oddly enough - I was reminded of the Kilchoman Madeira cask (minus all the peat smoke of course) - largely on the basis of it being quite a different whisky flavour profile.
