Is it me or is the Benromach 10 getting tastier with every batch? Incredibly impressive and proof that affordable whisky can still equal really, really good whisky.

Nose

Such a recognizable an yummy nose, they really know what they're doing over there in Forres. Plenty of sherry influence. Some oranges, shoe polish and soy. A whiff of barbecue smoke and mild notes of praline.

Taste

A subtle smokiness, some light peat and leather and a hint of cigar ashes. Cured meat, bitter oranges, tobacco and a hint of chocolate. All the while the mouthfeel is rich and oily. Fuck, I knew this was good, but this is really blowing me away now.

Finish

Light peat smoke and some sweet sherry. Medium in length.

It takes more than a few drams to decipher the great complexity of this lightly peated Speysider. The nose has numerous layers. Predominant features are delicate bonfire smoke, polished wood and caramel sweetness with apricots, green apples and raisins. Flavorwise, Benromach 10 arrives strong and spicy, turning slightly dry and mineral with a blanket of leafy smokiness. Well-balanced oak cask influence contributes to a nutty, savory and prolonged finish, leaving behind mild bitterness and peat smoke. It's a highly recommended, sophisticated whisky.

The good thing going on here is that they really succeeded in creating an old style whisky. They try to do things the way they did it decades ago. Also in a very low level of production. This means high and constant quality. In my opinion they did a marvelous job with this 10yo. There is a lot of depth and richness going on for a rather young whisky. The low subtle level of peat really compliments this whisky in a great way. It’s not that in your face peat smoke like islays. It’s a more subtle distinctive smokyness. Burnt wood, campfire stuff like that.

I’ve emptied a few of these bottles already but I never got to write an extended review about it yet. Dunno why but better late then never since this one really deserves it to be reviewed! To be fairly honest I totally dig this whisky! It’s a straight out of the shelves bang for your buck. You get a lot more then what you pay for. In the Netherlands around €35-40 which is a steal in terms of quality.

Nose

This is an old style nose. Something they look for on purpose at Benromach and they succeeded in getting there very convincing! On the nose it gives a beautiful and delicate whisky. It’s full bodied. Sweet and a wee dry. A complex mixture between sherry & bourbon casks. Absolutely the best of both worlds. Rich flavors is what I get. Red fruit mix with mild spices, mild smokiness and oak. I get forest fruits, kiwi, vanilla, honey and caramel fudge. Cream buttered oak and a whiff of smoke on the nose. Not peatsmoke. More delicate and subtle. Just terrific!

Taste

The palate is so incredible powerful and balanced at the same time. Quite stunning at 43% ABV. Really impressive. Again this reminds me to old whiskies. Whisky from a time that even at just 40% ABV the whiskies had such a full and rich flavored body. This Benromach proves that it’s still possible to achieve this. There is definitely more smokiness going on here but still in a very supporting way. On the palate I get hazelnut chocolate, red apples, oranges, and the bitterness of young kiwi. Cinnamon, charred oak, fresh leather and cigars are in play as well. The depth is incredibly good. If tasted blind I would have sweared this was an rather old whisky in terms of age.

Finish

The long finish is extremely delicate, oily and again balanced. But after the nose and taste already have quite a big palate of flavors, the finish again keeps me busy for quite a while. There is some much going on here. I get raspberry now as well as wood shavings and fresh tobacco. Again some kind of honeyed sweetness and crème brûlée. I get a kind of mint-like peat experience when breathing in trough my mouth. The whole ends in a campfire/wood shavings kind of flavor. Excellent stuff!

Big compliments to Benromach. This is without a doubt one of the best, if not the best entry core range whisky I’ve tasted.

Nice, delicious whisky. After standing - reveals in bright tar and blurry-strawberry tones.

Nose

A fire stewed by rain, salt, tar, spices, lemon, sweet strawberry jam, caramel and apples in the background.

Taste

Hot black pepper turning into wood and varnish motifs, astringent, citrus.

Finish

Tart-woody, moderately astringent, sour-mustard, with notes of nuts and citrus zest.

Another classic of good quality. A quality / price ratio almost unbeatable. In this context, there is nothing wrong, everything is perfectly mastered.

Nose

A nose clearly on the peat, earthy at first which turns quickly into smoking fish (Herring?). Some ashes and tobacco are walking in this smoke. Behind, salty notes, flint and leather. After prolonged aeration the fruits appear, especially citrus fruits.

Taste

Light attack but not too much. Mastered reduction, not too much alcohol, not too much water, just enough. A mouth very oily and oily. Peat / smoke is less present than on the nose. The saline and mineral notes are always present accompanied by citrus, cocoa and delicate and light spices. A beautiful complexity!

Finish

Finale of medium length on saline peat and ashes first. Then come some notes of fruit, leather and a slight bitterness.

For 10 years there is a lot going on, beautiful nose, lots of taste, slowly fading finish - the flavors change and surprise, the sweetness is nicely held by spicy and slightly bitter notes, a really nice standard, I like it.

Finish

medium-long, fast-drying, sweet-spicy-bitter, malt, orange, kumquat, dark chocolate with cinnamon, ginger, vanilla, blueberries, blackcurrants, raspberries, beautiful smoke, mint, eucalyptus, the chocolate is lighter, banana, the tea reappears and the wood ...

You want bang-for-your-buck? This is it. Big recommendation to anyone, but surely not for the complete novice. (as this would be just too tough to get your head around)

If it only had a slightly higher ABV... Oh wait, there's a 57% version ;)

Nose

Wonderully full bodied oldschool nose. Somehow this smell always reminds me of an old, greasy car garage. With mechanics in greasy, dirty coveralls and someone grinding through some chassis or whatever in the back with metal sparks flying all over. So yeah: grease, oil, metal, dried dark fruit (plums?), mint and burnt twigs. All brilliantly packed and condensed into one big aroma experience.

Taste

A rather watery arrival, must be the ABV. Dried fruits, old tin can, shoe polish and some mint or eucalyptus. Gets smokier towards the end.

Finish

A very rewarding finish. Medium in length, but very pleasant - tastewise. Toasted oak, furniture polish (the one you use for oak furniture) and some rusty metal.

quite a moody dram, sometimes it really shines, other times it's a bit shy
