[March, 2017] After the Russians (Krim), the English (Brexit), the Americans (Trump) now the Turks went crazy - only the Dutch stayed calm and I like the Dutch for that AND because they are great (quality) whisky drinkers. That is why I decided to call this a Brora day - I need something really, really good now.

And I will do two head-to-heads: the 30-years old 5th vs. the 25-years old 7th release and the two 20-years old Rare Malts from 1975 and 1982 against each other.

So the clear winner is the 1975 mainly for its bigger complexity (yes, peat induces a lot of additional flavours and aromas over such a long time) and punchy freshness. Nevertheless
the 1982 is very nice too, but in a blind tasting you would not guess these two drams are from the same distillery and at the same age. Really interesting to see the difference peat makes...

The colour of both drams is pretty much the same. Both noses are quite closed due to to the high abv. But you smell it already unreduced and, of course very much better with some water added, this is peat vs. neat part two. The 75 offers a full load of peatiness while the 82 is rather gentle on that side.
    • Taste

The 75 offers an incredible rounded and balanced profile of both peaty and sweet flavours together with lots of different spices. In contrast to this the 82 is more dominated by the vanilla aromas (and much lesser by the peat). Both are excellent swimmmer and improve significantly with some water added.
    • Finish

Again both have this bold, fat, punchy Brora-ish mouthfeel, really delicious. They stick literally to your tongue. Very long finish on both sides, but with clear advantages to the 75 for its complexity and more balanced flavours profile.

I tasted it in 2003 and it was my first Single Malt that I bought. I found it incredibly well structured, the balance of peat smoke, sea spray and the freshness of the seashore and its power invaded my body like never before. My love for strong and distinctive Single Malts started with this 1982 Brora

Apricot compote, lemon sherbet, vanilla, crème brûlée, honey, excellent!

I can’t imagine a scenario where someone would knowingly drop the money this bottle goes for and be pleased with the result. The price is for the name Brora and Rare Malts only, IMO.

Nose is quite modern, but very hot, lactic and sour on varnish, grapefruit. Only some wax. Very big. Out of balance I would say. Not a strong Brora, or even Clynelish for that matter.

Palate is quite hot and modern. Cayenne, mikes honey hot, a little melon and subtle wax. A lot of heat though.

Finish is white pepper, ginger, powerful spirit dominate, but a little wax, vanilla, melon poke though. Varnish still a little lactic. Certainly not bad but if you shell out current prices, you’re bound to be disappointed.

Not the greatest Brora but powerful and pretty drinkable

Honey, green fruits, dry hay, little citric, hints of vanilla, whiffs of smoke - very good
    • Taste
      90 90
Punchy, oily, creamy, subtle sweetness, lemony, lemon peel, grapefruits, peach, banana

      Long, burning, zesty

Very good, but nothing fantastic. Rather a clean Brora.
    • Nose
Apricot barley, light smoke, slightly floral.
      White pepper. Light hay.
    • Taste
In the mouth of the cereal, apricot, lemon.
Barley, vanilla, licorice, hay, dry grass.
    • Finish
Finale on hay, smoke, cold ashes.
