    Unearthed but no treasure.

The joy of moving my whisky collection is, during the task, I’ve got face to face with many bottles I had forgot I had, overlooked along to way to other more interesting bottles and in some cases, not even realised I even had. This sample of Stronachie falls into that last category. Turns out it came with a purchase from Rattray some time ago. A purchase long forgotten. It came in a nice little hessian bag (I’m using that for today onward to keep loose cash in the car from sliding about. A little bonus along the way).

So, this little bauble gets opened. Let see what it’s all about.

Nose. Lemony, dusty, raspberry leaves and some corn syrup and a curry leaf. It’s got a strange fruit note to it. Like those chalky sweets we all remember from our youth. I wasn’t expecting this from an Islay. It’s not big, in fact you do have to really snort the little sod to tease but it’s pleasant enough though lacking personality.

In the mouth and the lack of personality it apparent. Sweet arrival become woody but stays off going into bitter territory. There’s some honey, some slight salinity, some vanilla, flecks of lemon rind a slight floral note but it’s all so vague and, sadly, forgettable. It’s just really not very interesting.

It’s not bad by any means, it’s pleasant and gentle and feels fine in the mouth but it reminds you at every sip that it’s go few things to say. Putting this up against a lot of the similar things at the same price would be embarrassing. There much, much more engaging things to be had at the same price. This sample was enough for one lifetime.

Not so impressive comparing to the very first time I tried this whisky but very tasty, smooth and delicious anyway. One of the best and recommended regular whiskies!

Pretty sweet. At first, honey. Later on fresh fruit. Apples, pears. Vanilla and caramel underneath. A pinch of spices. A distant trace of a balloon underneath everything.
    • Taste
      77 77
Fresh fruit, not so fresh after a while. A pinch of spices. More smoke. Ash. Ripe apples in the ash. Traces of buckwheat honey. The bitterness of the oak. Vanilla.

Smoke traces. Slightly sweet. Honey and caramel notes. Some fresh fruit, a little more ripe. Spices. Warming up. Medium-long finish. Then a lot of oak comes in.

Aroma: open, first malts-citrus, further everything on light tones - light notes of peel, nuts, honey, coffee with milk (lots and lots of milk and a little coffee), oak bark, distantly trapped notes of metal, rubber, raw earth. All these half-tones are framed by a brighter malt component, bread crumb.

Taste: quite bright, spices, ginger, woody tannins, sweet malt tones, caramel, brown bread, citrus zest.

Finish: spices, zest, ginger, cumin, grapefruit, rye bread crust, wood, slightly mineral and peaty, average duration.

    Rating: 83

Bottom line: surprisingly successful dozen, very complex for this age, with a bit unusual profile for Spey. Behaves nicely at 43%, nothing fails.

[May, 2015] Together with friends I finished this bottle that I bought for 33 Euro in March, 2015.

    In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 82,5. My notes state an old style blend profile with an anti-boring profile.

Just an average step-in whisky. For inexperienced drinkers this can be an interesting experience, for more experienced whisky lovers this isn't any interesting at all.
    • Nose
      82 82
Very sweet and light, floral, some light citrus and vanilla.
    • Taste
      81 81
sweet, very smooth and soft, a little thin, very easy to drink. Only a far hint of pepper, some caramel sweetness and some milk chocolate.
    • Finish
      79 79
Some short actually, sweet and easy, but taste is gone pretty soon.

One of the few official tasting notes on the packaging, which does not completely miss the true content ... And then JM comes in his Bible with an incredible 94 points for this guy !!!! Flight tasted again: No, the not yet failed complex nose and then especially the less sustainable finish in my opinion do not justify the Punkteschwemme. I'm always ready to correct myself upwards, but not here: my 81 points still make me fair.
    • Nose
sweet honey, malt a gogo, apples, strawberries, very light mint
    • Taste
soft and pleasant with the previous essences
    • Finish
Bitterness, but not of bad parents, ergo almost marzipan; Vanilla, sea of flowers ... and whoops, then the magic is over pretty fast

    Nose:
Sweet, Marzipan, woodsap, freshly cutted tree branches. The smell is nice, but immature. Loads of honey in here too. Are they sure they haven't put sugar in here?

    Taste:
    Sweet, honeyed, sugar-syrup, Molasses,

    Body:
    Weak and thin

    Finish:
Short-medium length. Sweet, sweet, honey, hint of vanilla, sugar and gone in 20 seconds.

    Price:
Don't know this was a given sample

    Comments:
This is very much a sweet whisky made for people who just stepped of whisky and coke or so. Or this is meant for the American whisky lovers as an alternative. Not my cup of tea though.

    N-
Prunes and chocolate with masculine oak in the middle. Light honey and
floral arise to give it a complex and well integrate of aromas.

P- Grassy and spicy, oily texture with vanillin from the wood. Chocolate is there with trace of coffee.

F- Medium, good strength to carry the oily liquid well. Fruity flavour to last.

  17. Marko_I did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

Nice crunchy, original whisky (as a "remake" of a Lost Distillery should that be so?) For an acceptable 35 €, the fruit compote and cereal / biscuit go well together.
    • Nose
yellow-sweet-fruity (pineapple, banana, apple-pear compote), vanilla, not too mild, rather crunchy, biscuits, cereals
    • Taste
and again first the fruit compote, then vanilla, milk chocolate, wholegrain biscuits, followed by a good portion of pepper
    • Finish
      medium long, milk chocolate, pepper

A pleasant dram. Reminiscent of the Tomatin Legacy.
    • Nose
Fresh, sweet bright fruits. Pineapple, mango, apple. In the background vanilla, honey and malt.
    • Taste
Malt sugar, honey and fruit again. It is slightly peppery with some oak.
    • Finish
Short and painless with a pleasant malt note and some oak.
