...a truly good friend! This is a delicious and flawless modern sherried dram with just about the right balance of the "holy whisky trinity" of wine-, malt- and wood-induced flavours. The nose is a little shy first so give it some time to breathe and play around with water - like many excellent drams this is a perfect swimmer...
The colour is amontillado sherry and the nose offers a fine modern sherry profile without any off-note. It is very shy first and demands some time of breathing. The sherry is rather dry and shows bitter notes of herbs and tobacco leafes beside the fruits and nuts. Some old leathers and a minor eucalyptus note pop up after a while as do the spicy woods, finally. An excellent modern sherry nose, for sure...
The taste is nicely layered on both clean modern sherry and malt flavours in a great balance. No one tries to dominate - they rather support each other. In later layers tasty chocolatey and toffee-marzipan notes appear before finally the spices and herbs kick in. No flaw or imbalance, this is just very, very quaffable. Some water releases additional aromas in the nose and turns both the taste and finish smoother (hence even more quaffable) - I like this dram both neat and a little reduced to about 43% abv.
The dram arrives warming and instantly coating on the palate with a fine creamy mouthfeel. The finish is very long and adds even more spices and waxes. No distracting bitter or astringent moments, these were perfect casks - thanks for that selection, dear Jim!
