Without a doubt the best Old
Pulteney I have tasted so far. It will set you back around 650 EUR, tough.
    • Nose
Very fruity and aromatic nose. I
can smell it before even putting my nose in the glass. Pineapple in its own
juice, mandarin and a touch of gooseberry. The whole is sprinkled with soft
spices like cinnamon and vanilla. A touch of mint and a handful of nuts. After
a few moments a hint of mocha appears. It also has something ‘dusty’, if you
know what I mean. This is nice, soft and mouth watering.
    • Taste
It is gentle and oily on the
palate. Mouth coating. The spices are a bit louder now (and nutmeg joins the
fray) while the fruit concentrates on citrus. Next to the mandarin some blood
oranges appear. Rum raisins, some chocolate. And then suddenly it turns dry.
Leather and sniffing tobacco. Midpalate it also gets a nice salty edge.
    • Finish
In the medium to long finish,
this Pulteney proves that it is a tightrope walker. Great balance between the
sweet fruit on the one hand and the mildly drying tannins on the other.

    Balanced and pretty drinkable
    • Nose
      89 89
Green apple, little nutty, malty, dry hay, spices, pepper, hints of vanilla, oak wood - really not bad
    • Taste
      90 90
Nutty, oily, creamy, spicy, little nutmeg, little fruity, more apple, fine oak wood - very good
    • Finish

      Medium long, warm, balanced

Not one of their better efforts I must say. OP 21 is better. And I'll take a Talisker 18 any time.
    • Nose
Old iron factories, maritime, unripe pears/apples
    • Taste
Salty, oily, peppery, slightly metallic and grassy, very shy fruits, thin mouthfeel.
    • Finish
Peppery finish, citrusy, a bit bitter, not long lasting.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Thick, juicy slices of fruit cake, with cocoa and toffee sauce drizzled on top. Clementine segments and vanilla pods.
Palate: More citrus notes, with honey-nut cereals and plump raisins. Sherried spices, old leather and a waft of sea-breeze.
Finish: Long and rich with plenty of raisins along the way.
Overall: A shipshape dram with masses of character. Lovely work as ever from Old Pulteney.

A really rich, old whisky with all the deep notes expected from such a dram, but I felt the wood was a bit too dominant here.
    • Nose
Wood. Naphthalene. Craft glue. Ruby grapefruit. Celery. Salt. Linen. Dry potpourri. Chocolate coating berries. Orange peel. Custard.
    • Taste
Honey. Wood. Stewed fruits. Bitter coffee. Brine. Light cinnamon. Allspice. Sandalwood. Sultanas.
    • Finish
Long. Warm sandalwood. Vanilla. Toffee. Naphthalene.

    Old Pulteney 35 yo
    (42,5%, OB 2014, 2700 btl.)

Nose: a gentle starter, pleasantly old-style, taking off on oily notes and waxed papers. A bit of mint and exotic spices. The it moves towards fruity notes (tangerines, whitecurrants, hints of pineapple). Also echoes of vanilla cake and floral honey, with some leathery undertones. Soft and subtle, you shouldn’t rush this one. Mouth: quite fruity, mainly on oranges (fresh and marmalade) and raisins. Even more leathery notes now. Hints of old wood, mint and eucalyptus. After a while almonds and walnuts, dipped in chocolate. Nutmeg and a subtle coastal edge. Finish: quite long, rather on the dry side now, with oak spices and a few tannins, although the juicy raisins are still present as well.

An excellent dram again. I prefer the even more exotic fruitiness of the 40yo but this is playing in the same league. Around € 650 – a lot of money but some other distilleries ask more for their 30yo.

    Score: 90/100

N: First impressions - it’s so very Clynelish-esque. Salt smashed into honey, chilli and lemon - wonderful combo for a fresh sole fillet.

T: Malty, woody, limestone - good and complex arrival which softens quickly on the palate, becoming buttery, creamy and oily with grassy notes.

F: Soft wood oils, close to almond oil in consistency. Waxy, vanilla, fresh aniseed and fruits salivating to the last

C: Very good balance between wood and malt, a balance often a lacking in younger expressions. As a result it’s the best Pulteney expression i’ve tried to date, due in part to optimum maturation levels and conditions. Super stuff, outscoring the Balblair ’69 too. Like Balblair, the Pulteney spirit can handle the years - must be something to do with the climate up there.

    Producer's Notes

    Appearance: Light amber

Aroma: The initial wave of honey sweetness, exotic spices and citrus is followed by fruit cake and bitter chocolate. Over time gentle undertones open up with hints of fresh vanilla and sticky toffee pudding. A truly indulgent whisky on the nose enriched and fabulously balanced by the long maturation.

Flavour: Full bodied and bursting with attitude. This exceptional dram is sweet and spicy and quickly develops a range of signature Old Pulteney flavours from honey, rum soaked raisins and Californian oranges to the heavier notes of seasoned leather, pralines and a touch of the salty North Sea air.

Finish: A slow long finish with gentle waves of dried fruit and silky tannins.
