I suspect / detect some Ben Nevis at work in here!

Very nice, slightly peaty, oily, and muscular blend. Could use a longer finish but otherwise a decent sipper.

  2. ColdAesthetics scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

I think it's absolutely great, the most beautiful of the three Pure Malts and also one of the best beginner Japanese to prove to everyone what they can do.
    • Nose
Has a bit of oldschooliges, different, beautiful drupes in oil, apple, apricot, peach, with seeds everything, lighter subtle match wood smoke, some moist leaves, herbal honey, nice full, fruit bowl and salted toffees peated from Scotland
    • Taste
Also here strong onset, apricot, wild berries, peach, red apple, orange, all with a nice bitter and dry shell, also here the lightly reminiscent of matches, farther back, autumn leaves, some tobacco box, herbal honey, darker malt
    • Finish
Dry fruity, eigtl almost everything from the taste again concentrated, the foliage and the Tabakkiste especially with a little orange oil, medium to long

Overall great dram at the price. Salty on the nose, with light peatiness. Some fruit as well. Old oak on the taste, with aforementioned peat and salt coming through with apple and orange. Quite a short finish.

Not as good as the "Whisky from the Barrel" Nikka but a decent malt after all.Concerning price/performance ratio: 8/10
    • Nose
Fruits, smoke, yellow fruits (lemon, oranges, apples), vanilla, caramel, honey.
    • Taste
Fruits (apples, oranges), bitter oak, vanilla, caramel, smoke and salt.
    • Finish
Medium. Hints of espresso, dry and a bit bitter oak.

Pleasant Nikka combines the fruits well with sherry and smoke.
    • Nose
Lots of fruit. Salted caramel, antique skin. Touch of peat and sulfuric smoke.
    • Taste
Sweet fruits and bitter oak. Peat, smoke, sherry, vanilla.
    • Finish
      Medium length, spicy, oaky.

    Maritime Japanese
The Pure Malt Black from Nikka, should it have been a Scottish product, would have to be called Blended Malt Black. It is composed with mostly Yoichi malt whisky, but upholstered with peated malt of which it is being whispered that this might be Islay malt. I last tried this in 2012 and thought it was okay. I wonder if this batch, more than four years later, is still good.
On the nose I get a mix of exotic fruit like mango, pomelo and a slice of pineapple, but discrete peat stops it from becoming truly fruity. The peat gives it a dirty edge. But after a few moments something candy-like and some bubblegum appear.
On the palate, the peat is a lot more outspoken and a grand smokiness develops, giving the fruit even less room, but it does work. It is nicely oily and very spicy. Think pepper, ginger and a bit of nutmeg. And salt! Yes, suddenly a brackish note appears, giving it a somewhat maritime character.
In the finish, the peat slowly fades away, offering the final word to the sweet, yellow fruit.
A lovely and very affordable bottle of Japanese whisky, that will please lovers of peat, I’m sure.
