A pleasant surprise. Very well balanced, and enough little intricacies to never get boring.
    • Nose
Light, soft and round. Subtle sherry and an even subtler peat influence. Plums, brown sugar and a hint of soy sauce. Both sweet and savory.
    • Taste
Earthy peat smoke with soft spices and herbs. Black pepper and thyme. Charred oak and oranges. Nicely balanced.
    • Finish
Peat smoke lingers for a long time. As does the oak.

An old Ardmore in sherry casks. Why not? Opened it in 2022. So it sat in the bottle for 9 years. Quite a long time.

N: Sweet and sour apples. Some green some red. Very deep. A bit bitter perhaps. Nutmeg. Raisins and plums. Some dark caramelized oranges. Extremely malty. Wood notes, old books and leather. Everything wrapped into a nice subtle earthy peat smoke. (85)

P: Soft, balanced and full. Such a nice mouth feeling. Starts of with some bitter oranges. Dark caramel and creamy vanilla. Huge amount of oak from the 17 years. Nutmeg. Some raisins and black tea. Some sea salt and iodine. Very subtle peat. Extremely drinkable and pleasant. (84)

F: Extremely long. Lots of oak. Dark chocolate and bitter oranges. Medicine and peat. (85)

I like this. It needs a bit of time in the glass for sure. 43% is fine but I would have preferred a more healthy 46%. But we can't get everything can we?

Tasted this on a fine afternoon in Edinburgh at me friend's house. This totally blew me away. Such a nice example of what a nice Ardmore can be. If it was bottled at 46% it would even be better than this.. 95/100 for me still.

nothing fruity here, this is about peat smoke, wood and dark spices, very good, love that present, but not too prominent peat smoke. Very substantial, dense, decent cask influence.
    • Nose
at first slightly soapy, sweet and sour green apple (think granny smith), very dense, subtle peat smoke, licorice, gently bitter, wooden spices, nutmeg, quite intense at 43%vol, adding water works well
    • Taste
Soft and gentle, very sweet dark caramel, creamy mouthfeel, spicy peat smoke, there is a lot of oak, but not too much, dark toasted bread, roasted chestnuts, overbrewed tea, gets very mellow
    • Finish
long, turns dry, more oak, bitter medicine, chocolate, peat smoke lasts very long

this is good stuff, boys and girls. @ GM Next year at 46% please!!!
    89/100
    • Nose
very fresh, very mild oak, very mild sherry influence, linseed oil,
apple basket, the expected peat needs time to become obvious. but it´s quite sooty.
to be honest, had I nosed this blind I had guessed  longrow.
the longer I nosed this the more I liked it
    • Taste
wow, the palate is really very nice, I think 46% would even do a better job. very longrow with an ashy fruitiness and quite some dry and salty sherry influence. finest liquorice, finally some barley
    • Finish
      medium to long, salty.

Rather light-bodied. All in all a very decent dram from an interesting distillery with occasional heavy peating!
    • Nose
Gravenstein apples (green), quite a lot of clean peat smoke, a faint sherry note and stirred strawberries, chocolaty liquorice, vanilla, melted sugar, mellow wood sprinkled with a fruity powder, white pepper, heavy caramel in the background, ice coffee, a little bit of ash, some corn-syrupy malt, lots of spices, dusty old wooden cellar, a tad of grapefruit, an almost rubbery/oily presence (very faint and pleasant), white flowers and a hint of honey.
    • Taste
Burnt syrup, cream, a zesty-sweet presence, some unburnt peat, a bit of Fino sherry (?), thin caramel.
    • Finish
Shortish - clean smoke, some faint vanilla and wood spices, some mellow oak and a faint trace of red fruits.

This semi-official Ardmore is a good whisky. But, it could have been better, if the dilution was not so important. The mouth lacks attack and body, which is even more frustrating as the aromatic palette is very interesting. This is still a very good dram that will make you have a good time tasting!
    • Nose
quite discreet, with a thin smoke in the background. The foreground is gradually revealed, starting with notes of hazelnuts, toasted almonds, then evolves to a sweeter register: applesauce, pear, quince jelly. In parallel, more mineral notes bring freshness, supported by anise and mint.
    • Taste
very light texture, like this Ardmore was too diluted. The smoke is more present than the nose, even if it remains soft and light. The aromas, although light, cover a wide spectrum: dried fruits (roasted almonds), spices (pepper, cinnamon), fruits (apple, pear) and citrus fruits (oranges).
    • Finish
hot and quite persistent despite the reduction, with notes of apple crumbles and smoke.

Ardmore 1996 (43%, Gordon & MacPhail 2015) Nose: roasted almonds, toasted oak, complemented with some red apple sweetness and a hint of ripe banana. It’s lightly peated with a gentle mineral side and hints of wet wool. After a while the minerals, pepper, aniseed and chlorophyll have taken over. Mouth: a lighter attack than we expected, but richly flavoured. Warm smoky notes, pepper and gentle peat, alongside candy apple, cinnamon pastry and roasted almonds. Finish: long, warm and smoky, with an underlying toffee sweetness.

This is an excellent introduction to smoky whisky. The sweet roundness and balanced spicy notes are a good match for the gentle peat and toasted aromas.
