Beautiful fragile Ardbeg from a nice vintage... Definitely not a peat monster, this is all about subtleness with a little raw peaty edge. This is how I like Islay.
    • Nose
It starts with lots of cured ham and heavy bonfire. Brimstone. Lemon juice and green apples intermingled with ashes (if you know what I mean:-)). Some grassy and farmy notes. Tobacco smoke. Eucalyptus. Very complex and very, very good.
    • Taste
Rich and peaty. It's maritime and tarry with oysters and fresh kelp. Anchovies and dried-crab-shells. But also lemon pie and kiwi-fruit. Mandarins. Mint-praline. Still quite gentle, may be because of the 50% ABV.
    • Finish
Long. Pine resin and liquorice. A litte black pepper. Salty at the end. Perfectly balanced.

    • Nose
Very peaty, burned wools, robust and immense. More gasoline, shoe polish, chocolate nuggets.
    • Taste
Sweet and peaty, quite balanced and sweet, peat syrup, leather syrup. Lots of high esters.
    • Finish
Long, smoke, peatiness, cigar smoke, damp wools, roasted almonds.

Nose: Butter block, cured ham, rich medicinal essence (dendrobium), sea salt, eucalyptus oil, kerosene and tar in the back, very expressive and complex, I think this will be the one that Ardbeg Fans is more familiar with.

Drink: This is a thug in a suit. There is a magnificent sense of strength everywhere, but it will not hurt you at all. MSG, dried kiwi fruit, fruit juice, charcoal smoke, and a cool mint at the end.

This is nice stuff, shows good balance.

A different nose to the 72 28 year OMC I have just tried this is much heavier and meatier on the nose, more sherry influence.
This is an ashy, smoky peat like raking over bonfire embers, there is a little lemon in the mix and hints of grapefruit but they are in the background.
    • Taste
      91 91
The peat is in control from the start, peppery and salty but it is also a little drying with a little woody bitterness mid cycle but then a final blast of fruit, like fresh pineapple mixed with sweet lemon.
With a few drops of water the peat is less aggressive and the fruit is more evident but then there is a nice kick back on the peat if you leave it in your mouth for 30 seconds or so.
I am getting a little sherbet fizz, honeycomb and a few cake mix notes.
    • Finish
      92 92
Good length, peat and fruit grappling with each other

Refined, creamy Ardbeg, with a low dose of peat. Serious stuff!
    • Nose

    • Taste

Peat, hazelnut, mandarin, After Eight chocolate, burnt gum and orange peel.

      Long, creamy, spicy.

Ardbeg 29 yo 1972/2001 (50%, DL Old Malt Cask, sherry finish, 432 bottles)Colour: light gold. Nose: some sherry (sweetish) and the usual Ardbeg. Very bold and rich. Mouth: great interplay peat-sherry. Lots of iodine, tar, and some burnt tyre notes ala Port Ellen. Long finish, on some strong medicinal notes (campher, bandages). A beauty, and in this case the finishing seems to add some complexity. I wouldn't say a 'naked' version wouldn't have been better, though. 92 points (Davin 95, Olivier 95).
