This is a decent Oloroso-matured whisky, and it is interesting to see what a cask strength version (to be released somewhere this fall) is like. But it's no competitor for the Aberlour a'bunadh and I doubt it will become one at a higher abv.
    • Nose
Lots and lots of sweets, like a cherry-flavoured candy cane. Orange and raspberry. The nose has a youngish, spirity smell. That's not terribly surprising, since this is a NAS-whisky, unlike the regular 16yo Nàdurra. Underneath all the sweetness it has a strange beer-like, almost sour quality. Is this what the wort at The Glenlivet smells like? All in all a pleasant nose, but a bit one-dimensional.
    • Taste
More spicy (mint) and more wood-influences. It doesn't even come close to the sweetness of the nose. Some dried red fruits, a bit of tobacco and a slight overall dryness.
    • Finish
Warming. It lingers for quite a long time. Red forest fruits, cherries, sugar, tobacco.

in general, the aroma is not very impressive, pale. But everything is cool in taste, you just want to drink it)
I would love to try this release at barrel speed)

A rare option when the taste is higher than the aroma, but combination of aromas and tastes is very nice.

A little disappointing - not matching the oomph of A'bunadhs and falling short on complexity. I found the experience a little flat throughout - nothing bad, but not seat gripping stuff. The original 16yr old Nadurra's  I found far more exciting.

Smell: orange juice, sweet cherries, citrus, a hint of mint, some caramel Taste: orange and malt, alcohol is noticeable, light spice, a little young, slightly metallic, lots of power Departure: short to medium-long, slight bitterness, a hint liquorice Conclusion: Good, but not more. The whisky is tasty and makes you want more, but the special something is missing a bit. He has big bucks with his 48%, that's good for him. Good would have done him, however, even a few years in the barrel, then the Sherry would certainly clearer and the lack of maturity would certainly disappeared. So it's just a promise for the really great older sherry barrel glenlivet. 84 points

Impressive presentation from start to finish. The Oloroso finish is polite and restrained and such a refreshing change from the numerous and often over-egged contemporary sherry bombs. Its subtleness shouldn’t be misinterpreted as inferior or substandard compared to louder competitors. This isn’t an obvious ‘wow’ sherry malt but a sophisticated and consummate rounded performer, perfect in its own way.

    Scores a B+

  16. Alex scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Powerful and intense delivery, which was unexpected. The taste is smooth and fresh on dry sherry, first quite fruity, later develops to more nutty notes. Nice dram.
