... I liked the nose the best
The feeling of having caught only a part of the actual whisky, I have not so much with him, as usually with Caol Ila ...
the mouth falls off against the beautiful nose
    the finish is too bitter
there is no harmony or tension 85 out of 100 points
    a welcomed dram
    • Nose
he smells of vanilla and glue
      sterile medicine
      maritime, lots of salt
      Honey and herbs
      Clementines & coffee
      a touch of marzipan
All flavors you find in a wicker basket
which stands in a warm saltwater puddle
    • Taste
cool and sweet at the start
      Your tongue is burning
Chocolate, alcohol, some fruit, wood, cold smoke
    • Finish
      medium
      bitter, woody
      smoky bitter ash
      dark dry chocolate

Classical intense Bourbon Caol Ila - the alcohol should be better integrated
    • Nose
cooling ash, salted vanilla, menthol - strong alcohol
    • Taste
Campfire smoke, sweetness and saltiness, black hot pepper
    • Finish
medium with smoke and some wood

[October, 2014]  I had this dram during a "Feis Ile 2014" tasting at Bonn.

    In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 90. My notes state a sweet, delicious and well rounded malt that is very, very quaffable...  No flaws that I could find!

Nose:Quite classic Caol Ila here. Starting with creosote, seaweed and seaside (salty) notes, lemon drops , peat and ash. Vanilla topped lemon curd pie. Sweet smoke ,fresh leather and brine. It’s a Caol Ila alright, nothing fancy or out of the ordinary, not bad though.

Palate: Oh. Starts quite strong with mint, pepper and tons of sweet creamy smoke. Lots of peat which transforms to sweeter maltier sensations. Bitter ash galore.

Finish: Long . Classic finish of dry ash, seaweed and brine.

    Bottom Line:

No surprises here. Not an ultra complex or ground breaking dram, but It’s not bad either. However for the same price of the superb Lagavulin, I do expect more than just a Cask Strength Caol Ila (you can buy for a lot cheaper). This is a rather disappointing bottling after all, and does not offer a good Bang for your buck ratio. We expect more from a festival bottling, and this one did not deliver.

A great "Feis Ile" issue where the distillery went out of its way to pick some sharp barrels for the 1,500 bottles. A few drops of water make it even more powerful. Stop a real Islay Malt !!

typical young caol Ila from now days! It's not bad...

  16. SteveW110 scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

It's a pretty "wild" malt ... Not round, more with rough edges ... Reminds me strongly of a Talisker 12yo
    • Nose
The first thing I have in my nose is fine smoke with a great bourbon note (vanilla), but also a salty note that reminds a little of the sea and a certain sprit is undeniable. Also a hint of peanuts are to be found ...
    • Taste
Short sweet caramel start followed directly by spicy, mostly salty note. The smoke joins nicely. The malt reminds me of fresh / unripe green pears roasted over vanilla fire ...
    • Finish
Medium long finish with slightly bitter notes (almonds / grapefruit)

Well, what can you say, a benchmark Islay Malt. Pure and genuine, no frills. But never boring. That's the case with the Feis Ile Bottlings, the distilleries do not let themselves get lazy and look for really good barrels, even if they are not fully convinced on the paper (12yo refill ...), the truth is in the glass. What sets him apart in my eyes clearly from an ordinary Islayer from the Bourbon keg is the significant gain in flavors with some water. For my personal taste, it should have been a sherry keg again ;-)
    • Nose
Pure: a perfectly balanced, typical ex-Bourbon Islay Malt. And no stinker! Fierce, beautiful sea flavors in the summer, no medicine, no tar, just open campfire on the beach with friends. Fine vanilla and caramel notes. Very intense the whole thing. Classic and good. With some water: looks even fresher, even more maritime, holiday in the glass !!
    • Taste
Pure: nice sweet and slightly sharp onset, delicious bourbon barrel notes, light spices, salt, medium smoke level, damn balanced, but not ordinary. With water: now even better, sweeter, freshly lemony and salty, like a wave of cool sea water straight into your face.
    • Finish
Medium long, sweet smoky, salty, coast.

The nose is like an ultra clean-yet-spicy version of the standard 12yo. Definitely a Caol Ila but much more aromatic and complex than the standard 12yo. Water released some softer fruity notes. Lovely! Crisp yet soft peat (difficult to explain) on the palate, but once again more complex spices and fruits add considerably to the attractiveness of the whisky. Lingering soft and smoky finish. I really liked this dram. Got a chance to try it head-to-head with the 2013 Feis release before deciding which one to buy. Both were fantastic, but the sheer class of the 2014 won me over.
