    Blind tasting:

Smell: fantastic nose: tropical fruit, salty air, tobacco, cedar, almond, apple, white grape, hay

Taste: full and creamy, tropical fruit, orange, apple, cedar, spices, liquorice

Finish: almond, apple, salty sea, long and soft.

An interesting whisky, which does harbour some of the classical BenRiach notes (as far as I know them). In particular, the late development in combination with a drop of water was a added bonus to the experience. I got some rather unique notes not often found in matured whisky.

It starts fairly quite with some fruits (apples, oranges and tangerines) and a few citric and grassy tones. Old wood, hay stopped by a kick of the spirit. Probably this needs some time and water to open up. So after 1 and a half tea spoon of water it indeed provides a wider range of scents. Lemon merengue pie, cucumber, more tangerines (now from tin) and after a while suddenly liquorice and marzipan arise. What a pleasant surprise! Fruit liquorice (cherry-flavour), marzipan chocolate figures, and it gets fruitier with cooked peaches, perfectly ripe nectarines and freshly made almond paste.

Oh yeah heavy kick of the alcohol, followed by minerals (iron, calcium) and lemon juice. Also some waxy notes, baked apple, old wood, straw and copper. Water brings more minerals, wax, wet wood, and also here after a while liquorice and marzipan. Black liquorice, dark chocolate filled with cherry liquor, old Spanish style rum and drying wood. The aftertaste is rather long with more liquorice, rum, cherries, chocolate and wood.

A good dram, not that complex, but very enjoyable. I like this style of whisky.
    • Nose

Light in fragrance, wort, vanilla, flowers, fresh grass, macadamia nuts, white chocolate, after a while it loosens more with some tropical fruit and also something buttery and bread that was not there before.
    • Taste
      88 88
honey, vanilla, custard, red velvet cake, little citrus, lemon.
    • Finish
      87 87
The honey lingers for a long time, a little wax, gets a bit drier. Later on, the citrus also emerges slightly.

It takes a while for this one to really reveal itself. This profile reminds me of Ben Nevis and Tobermory. Blind tasting (ProefOlympics), didn't think of Benriach.

First grainy, cardboard. Then honey and butter. A dirty touch of caramel, getting stronger. Little vanilla, little banana. Eventually peach, quite a lot. Pineapple too.
    • Taste
      88 88
Honey, apple, cashew, vanilla, butter, peach, coffee and banana.
    • Finish
      87 87
Honey, vanilla, salted caramel and peach.

  6. The Macallan scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

A nice sherry cake like fruity whisky
    • Nose
A lovely palette of sherry aromas, some warehouse smell, matured, aromatic with chocolate and fruit
    • Taste
Very tasty, sherryfruit, woody notes and slightly sweet.
    • Finish
Dry with fino like influences, slightly fruity in the back

Tastes good! For a top rating missing the variety of fruit flavors and a slightly better bound alcohol, otherwise pretty much what you can expect from a good bourbon barrel BenRiach. More please.
    • Nose
Very fruity on the go with notes of pears, grapes, melons ... after a while in the air develop sweet / spicy aromas, eg marzipan, vanilla, honey,
    • Taste
a lot of honey and some spiciness (alcohol, but also menthol), pear also available here, liquorice, some wood
    • Finish
Sweetness and fruit are also dominant on the finish, with some wood / bittership at first, which, however, passes away relatively quickly
