Grand Old Parr 40% 12 year old. Old fashioned packaging, labelled as a 2018 bottling for Colombia, with a valve top. Aroma is super-cheap and just not good. Papery, slightly nauseating, sulphured oak. Taste is burnt and slightly sulphured, a blend that seems like it should otherwise be good but that got messed up by one or two sulphured casks. Oak tea, apple flesh, soft peat starts coming up and lingers into the finish. My impression is that some mousy and sulphured casks got in along the way of this being a good whisky. A shame. Over time you get used to the flaws (or perhaps some air helps) and the intended nature of the whisky comes out, which could be really good. I get the sense that if the casks used for execution and bottling were as good as the samples nosed for the purposes of setting the recipe, this would score around 82 in my book. However they weren't and this is a max 3.0/72 (initially I was thinking low 60s). As I got more and more into the dram I felt like i could overlook the flaws, but that's probably just the alcohol talking! Maybe it deserves a lower rating, but then it's not like it was bad enough to stop me drinking plenty of it...

It's a blend, he can not hide it, but it's well composed and truly drinkable, even for the single malt lover.
    • Nose
Sweet, malty, light sherry notes, flowery, a little pear, oak, some coconut, slight grainy notes in the background. Very round, balanced and pleasant.
    • Taste
soft, toffee, cereals, slightly dry, oak.
    • Finish
slightly dry, oak, subtle sherry notes. Slight aftertaste of the grain, some pepper.

Pretty OK, very drinkable and quite enjoyable - better than most older bottlings
    • Nose
      Malty, fruity, green apples
    • Taste
Fresh, oily, liquorice, fruity, malty again, honey, some green fruits, but also exotic fruits, pineapples, nice sweetness
    • Finish
      Medium long, little zesty
