After a fortnight of loosing the olfactory sense for two weeks, I am on a rehab into whisky, despite the extreme hot weather here in eastern China. But this dram really have me suspected whether I recovered from my previous cold, as it is hard to catch something from it.
    • Nose
      65 65
No, I woudn't buy a bottle of a cheap blend, but the sample I had was spoiled by the silicon rubber cap, which imparted loads of white buttons into the dram. After sticking my nose into the copita I found a hint of date, raisin, herb and sugary water.
    • Taste
      70 70
Light body and light arrival, what do I expect? Mushroom again hit first, followed by soft peppery spices, raisin, some salty soysauce, orange peel, moss. Some umami from milk.
    • Finish
      70 70
Spices continues and stayed for really a period. some sweetness from raisin, sweet milk. I can hardly find any other notes for the finish besides those aforementioned

It surprised me because I expected it to be much more aggressively alcoholic, easy to drink, goes very well with traditional ice, but is worthy of an uncompromised tasting without ice. A fruity classic.
    • Nose
      73 73
Immediately vanilla, caramel, sweet malt and light oak, then pineapple; if you take a deep breath alcohol appears and attacks! In the drum with ice, the alcohol disappears, keeping the vanilla, in addition to yellow fruits.
    • Taste
      71 71
Vanilla, yellow fruits, bread dough, spicy although I expected more aggressive. With ice there is a slight note more salty than sweet, in addition to the bitterness of grilled vegetables.
    • Finish
      70 70
      Medium to weak finish.

  9. Boletus did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

Malt and grain whiskeys complement each other to create a very soft overall picture with a light smoky note, carried by toffee and a light sherry fruitiness. ''Strathisla'' clearly stands out as a lead malt. Only the somewhat furry and slightly bitter finish shows that the barrels used were afflicted with slight flaws, which spoil the overall pleasure a bit.
    • Nose
A fruity-sour basic mood accompanied by a very low and delicate smoky note, apples and pears, everything is carried by a light grain note of damp cardboard, some lemon refreshing tissue, lots of toffee, banana, a little nutty towards chopped hazelnuts, little oak, more liquorice and liquorice , caramel and vanilla with a hint of honey
    • Taste
Toffee and fruit gums, cherries, apples and pears, caramel, some honey on baked banana, butterscotch, milk chocolate with roasted hazelnuts, silky soft mouthfeel, some lemon and orange bring a tingling sourness into play, very little cardboard indicates the grain content, this but gives the malts enough leeway, the oak speaks up belatedly, reservedly and bitterly, a hint of liquorice
    • Finish
Medium length, somewhat furry with a slight bitterness, black tea with a dash of lemon, milk chocolate, caramel, but also clear malt, minimal heather, some conservative oak and liquorice, slightly roasted, the delicate smoky note shimmers through again, toffee remains in the mouth

I haven’t had any whisky for a couple of weeks, but this seems okay-ish. Alcohol’s poorly integrated but there’s some hits of fruit. Appears very young.

Vanilla, coconut, white grapes, alcohol, honey.
    • Taste

A hit of green apples and grapes. Coconut returns, along with obvious vanilla.

Light and mildly fruity. Oak x vanilla x honey. More spices coming up towards the end but remain tamed.

    F 20

    - a good solid blend and all day dram
    - has a nice soft character trait of a
    Blends and little grain noticeable
    - as a standard blend with 12 years already a high
    quite good qualitative start
    - on offer at 20€ for the 12 year old whiskey a good one
    price and good quality

Nutty maltiness with a fruity touch for its mild 40 vol., the alcohol can be clearly felt on the tongue and on the palate with a sharpness that speaks for a young whiskey. This spoils the round impression of the nose and the first taste and also dominates the finish. Therefore, the overall impression is 74 points for me.

  26. CellarToberi scored this whisky 85 points Member Senior

Long narrow slow primary and midsize slow secondary legs. Water pushes up cereal notes on the nose, while, surprisingly, sharpening the palate. A smooth Speyside style classic blend.
    • Nose
Surprisingly rich for a blend. Light and smooth in the Speyside style. Cereals: grain biscuits, malty notes. Floral: heather. Fruity: fresh, citrus, and stone fruits, candied fruit note. Sweet: light honey and caramel. Spiciness: light vanilla. Light oakiness: notes of older charred casks. Notes of sharp earthiness and light creaminess.
    • Taste
Sweet and spicy upfront. Fresh fruit and more spice on midpalate. Pepper and tannins on the back. Develops chocolate on the longer run. Nutty: hazelnuts. The transition, although evident, is short. The nose is richer than the palate: not very intense.
    • Finish
Short to medium: follows the palate with additional lingering tannins. Sweet: sugary, sappy notes. More restrained than the palate.

Sadly a pale shadow of what it was 25+ years ago. Designed to be inoffensive, but very grain-dominated blend. 12 years of maturation barely noticeable compared to entry level malts. Better buy Fiddich 12 instead for only a few bucks more.

Not overly complex, but recognizable. Smell of medium strength, pleasant taste with hints of smoke and oak, medium aftertaste. But finishing a pleasant evening with your beloved woman and your favorite tobacco is what you need. It may be a little expensive for its level, but you have to pay for the used brand :-)

    Seriously, I expected worse.

[2019 bottling] Sure, it's totally inoffensive and unmemorable, but it has no evident flaw and it's certainly less grain-forward than many of the equivalent best-selling blends. Seriously, on the palate, the malt part speaks quite a bunch I believe. This could have been worse.
    • Nose
      78 78
It's not bad in any way. Green apples, a little vanilla, and even a minuscule touch of smoke (or dry minerals) maybe ? The grain part is noticeable but far less dominant than in comparable blends.
    • Taste
      79 79
Quite some presence actually with some dry malty notes, a bit of earth, green apples and ever so slight smoke. Very thin texture wise though.
    • Finish
      76 76
Expectedly short and bringing nothing new to the table.

  44. Slàinte Mhath scored this whisky 78 points Super Administrator

As one of the best-selling Blended Scotches in the world, Chivas Regal 12 certainly stands out from the crowd of cheap and low-quality alternatives. Fruity and slightly aromatic notes with honey, caramel and vanilla characterize the nose. Don't expect any exiting features or great complexity. The lead malt Strathisla comes through on the palate: it tastes light and sweet with creamy toffee, red apples and pleasant hints of nuttiness. Old refill cask bitterness remains of a quickly gone finish. A flawless but altogether boring blend with age statement.

This is just a very well made blended whisky. The nose (which is the best part of it) is very inviting and promises a whisky that has a very fine balance. Yes, it's aimed a a broad audience as a friendly and easy sipper, but you just can't argue with the quality. I like to compare this with JW black, not in terms of flavour, but in terms of it being a benchmark as a quality entry level scotch whisky.
    • Nose
      82 82
Like stated, the nose is the best part of this whisky. A lovely combination of vanilla, honey, a hint of nuts, soft clove in the back and a faint touch of grass and red fruit with a gentle creaminess to round it all of.
    • Taste
      77 77
A typical blend, with the grainy, creamy note starting things up, immediately followed by vanilla, honey and a subtle wood note. Less complex and less rich than the nose, but none the less: unpretentious and a fine balance
    • Finish
      73 73
rather short, the taste just sort of fades out and then disappears allthogether, leaving with a slightly dry woodnote.

  46. Johnnie Stumbler scored this whisky 68 points Expert Junior

Nose: Polished wood, fennel fronds and vanilla custard. Moves on to toffee with some pleasing grassiness underneath. Really quite good.

Palate: Toffee sauce, brown sugar and dried banana pieces. A moment of slightly funky, cheap sticky toffee pudding and then it falls apart with a chemical bitterness.

Finish: The Achilles heel, I’m afraid. A little warmth, a little wood, a little boring.

Thoughts: Hugely drinkable and a decent price for what it is. The nose makes a few promises that the palate can’t live up to but it does the job.

The nose is nice. By cons after that does not follow.
    • Nose
Slightly fruity, vanilla ditto. We feel the alcohol, without it being abused either. This nose falls back in time. It's not sensational, but I prefer it to some entry-level single malt for sure.
    • Taste
It spoils a little here, the texture is very watery and it's still pretty aggressive. First sweet, then vanilla and finally bitterness that takes more and more space. Toasted caramel.
    • Finish
      non-existent

Needs a tiny drop of water. And likes time in the glass for more depth and definition in nose and taste. One of the better blends. Consistent in delivery, and readily available. Never compare to a malt, compare to a blend. This is good quality: blend-wise.
    • Nose
No water - beautiful nose, soft, summer flowers, vanilla, savoury/nutty tones, white chocolate.
With water - as without water, but warmer feel to the nose.
    • Taste
No water - hesitant arrival, then alcohol. Spicy development, with flowers, citrus. With water - citrus arrival. Development with black pepper and flowers.
    • Finish
No water - medium finish, bitter sweet, citrussy background. With water - relative short finish, bitter sweet.

Run of the mill blend. Uninspiring but not horrible
    • Nose
Woody, oaky ,a little honey, a chemical note that eases with a drop of water.
    • Taste
Weak mouth feel, oaky, very woody, vanilla, malty
    • Finish
Very woody short/medium finish. Slightly drying.

Not to much to it, but quite interesting for a blend.

    Concerning price/performance ratio: 7/10
    • Nose
A touch of sherry, fruit, vanilla, perfume, burned pear, floral, artifical flavour.
    • Taste
      Vanilla, fruit, spirit.
    • Finish
      Short to Medium. Wooded spirit.

In the restaurant usually a good choice, if nothing better is available. A clean blended whiskey without corners and edges. Pleasant and easy-going.
    • Nose
      Apple, vanilla, caramel
    • Taste
Honey sweetness, slightly sprittig, some oak
    • Finish
surprisingly long-lasting, sweet, slightly tart, blending into almond flavors.

Orange nose, vanilla, cereals. Soft palate on orange, caramel and a cool side. An unpleasant astringency at the end of the mouth. Short final. Drinkable Blend.

Nothing special.  I just couldn't find this whisky's character.  It was fairly bland.  There are better blends out there, that's for sure.  Still, it's probably good enough for cocktails.  Drinking it neat, however, is another matter...
    • Nose
Honey, raisin, with grain alcohol base (slightly like glass cleaner).
    • Taste
Vanilla, nutmeg?, pipe tobacco, slight chocolate, unidentified fruit, quite a bit of vodka-like burn.
    • Finish
Bitter walnut, slight wood, more grain alcohol with vodka-like burn.

Delicately balanced. Clean. Drinkable. There is an element of luxury.
    • Nose
Peach or orange blossom. Lemon. Hazelnuts.
    • Taste
Pancakes with cream. Orangey. Buttercups. Herbal.
    • Finish
      A little snappy and aggressive.

A decent blend without any particular character. Quite interesting on the nose and the palate is tasty. As with most blends there is no finish but it does what it is supposed to.

    (Rating interval 73-76)
    • Nose
Quite floral, a bit sweet, honey I believe. Bright as the spirit is quite apparent.
    • Taste
Floral, sugar nettle, some licorice, oak and corn flakes.
    • Finish
Short and insipid. Maybe some honey and alcohol immediate after swallowing but it's soon gone.
