Very very generic. Some sort of commonly accepted whisky. Doesn't make it bad, just very dull.

  2. wisekycourse scored this whisky 76 points Connoisseur

a bit toasty, roundness, but its particularity is to associate it with a parma ham with pine nuts!
in short, no novelty in retest!

    Fresh Figs

The Cardhu Distillery is the spiritual home of Johnnie Walker. This Speysider has been (and continues to be) the fingerprint malt in the world's best selling whisky. Until 1981, the distillery was called Cardow. Only 25% is bottled as single malt. This is one of them: the Cardhu Amber Rock. I guess you could call it Cardhu's answer to the NAS-releases.

The nose is very sweet on honey, Granny Smith apples, yellow raisins and mandarin. It also has a herbal side and some freshly sawn planks. Evolves towards fresh figs. Very softly spiced. After a few moments, it falls somewhat apart and goes all stale ale on me. So do not leave it too long.

The body is rather light, but not watery. On the palate, it is less round than on the nose, to be honest. Loads of sweet malt, oranges (peel included), raw sugar and even coffee grounds. It has a slight bitterness too, probably from the wood.

The finish is surprisingly long on cinnamon and oranges.

Not a grand malt, but very accessible. Just a tad to better to my taste to be really good. Goes well with a sweet plum pie, though. Not even 35 EUR.

    Nose, wood, wood and glue
In the mouth, one side patissier, velvety, alcohol almost nonexistent
In the final, it's short with a woody return

Distillery that provides JW at almost 65%, a double ripening that provides only too few flavors!

I find myself at the Cardhu distillery having only had one Cardhu before WB. Let’s make up for that and try six [starting with the NAS WB]
N: Light, of course. Water sweetens it. Some pancake notes.
T: Ok, yep it's young, dry, sour-ish and a little bitter - dry,... as a bone with a lovely development and establishment actually.
F: ,.... a hint of smoke on the finish, but sour in the main
C: It's actually not bad - no echoes of ‘Winter's Gold here’. Let’s try another NAS WB.

    I can't remember a Cardhu that I liked more.
    • Nose
Hugely orangey, herbal and more powerfully nosed than other Cardhus. Plenty of custard and sharp apple pie.
    • Taste
Nicely malted with orange barley sugars, cinnamon, coffee grounds and caster sugar.
    • Finish
Long, but very gentle with soft spice and fruit.
