  1. Malthead19 scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

    - a great older single malt
    - very round, soft & comfortable
    - but for the top it lacks some depth and character
    - for a 21 year old single malt it is between 65 and 70€
    a damn good price
    • Nose
Sweet malty, round, sherry, honey, not quite as intense as the 1989
    • Taste
soft, warm, voluminous attack, super balanced, sweetish sherry aromas, the sweetness stays in the mouth
    • Finish
medium long, soft finish ; round, sweetish aftertaste, raisins or plums, nuts, unfolds the full flavor here

[October, 2021] It is quite a long time ago I had this dram and I wonder if my perception now is different - because of all the modern cask-driven and "spiky" stuff which flooded the market since then...

...and yes, I appreciate it much more in the current context. This is easy quaffable stuff without any highlights to explore and without any flaws or imbalances either - just the way malt whisky was made before the hype (remember: It was made for smooth drinking only, and not for detailed analysis or social media hype postings). Slàinte!
    • Nose
      85 85
The colour is deep copper and the nose offers a subtle malt-driven profile with marginal cask influence only. It takes its time to open up so do not hurry this dram and let it breathe for at least 20 minutes (you know the rule of thumb: one minute per year of maturation). After that it displays the typical delicate and unspectacular old Speyside profile with mainly grassy-floral aromas in a waxy-earthy setting. The fruits are shy and the wood provides a firm backbone without trying to be dominant. Okay to sniff before taking a sip, but not really interesting to explore.
    • Taste
      87 87
The taste is nice to sip and unspectacular but to be honest: I like this much more than most of the one-dimensional "woodsky" or "shersky" creations of today's whisky world (but this is just my humble personal opinion). Not a dram crafted to be investigated in detail but very nice to quaff when watching the major football league or the like. After some chewing the barley sugars combine to a tasty milk chocolatey impression and the spices grow stronger, both turning the taste much more impressive. So I suggest to take your time while the dram is on the palate too, otherwise you will miss the best of this delicate profile.
    • Finish
      87 87
The initial mouthfeel is warming and nicely coating without distracting moments, this is a pretty good arrival (so the texture of the dram is fine). The finish is medium to long and adds more barley sugars, honeys and spices before it slowly fades. Again no distracting bitter or astringent moments here which proves the wood is in balance. Water is not needed.

    • Nose
      85 85
Sweet, slightly fermented fruit, delicately vinous, butter honey.
    • Taste
      85 85
Sweet, creamy, very fine and easy drinking. Slightly peppery,
delicately fruity. After a long sip, it was also clear
peppery. Can be chewed for a long time.
    • Finish
      82 82
Wood spices, very soft, bitter - sweet.

    Tasted on 02-28-2021.
Alcoholic, wooden but not much flavour at all. Even the 12 year old was better.

  5. DanishDistilled scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

This is a very good example of age not determining the quality of a whisky. 21 years did not make a real impact.
    • Nose
      86 86
Fresh wood and sawdust. Fresh notes come forwars slowly.
    • Taste
      86 86
Liquorice, fresh wood, plums, caramel. Much better than the nose.
    • Finish
      83 83
Almost exaclty the same notes as the nose.

Yes, ok, not a bad whisky ... But of course the expectations are higher for a 21 year old. He didn't have really good sherry casks - more vanilla flavors than sherry fruits. The whisky is colored, I assume it is much lighter ...
It's a Diageo whisky: a bit of color fake, not bad, not big - missed a chance.
It remains a latent bitterness - but it lacks the impressive finish that a 21-year-old would have deserved.

  7. rottendon scored this whisky 79 points Connoisseur

Had him again in a blind tasting with a slightly cold nose, this time gave him 82 points. Due to the cold, the old rating remains.

Drinkable standard, there are definitely better but also significantly worse.

    Notes from a blind tasting.
    • Nose
      82 82
Yellow fruits and herbal tincture determine the first two breaths, honey is added, the fruits become a little stronger. After some time in mirabelles and peaches soaked in alcohol, the herbs are gone. The herbs come back warmed.
    • Taste
      83 83
Honey, a slight tingling, which increases significantly towards the back, quite sweet, otherwise there is not much. A bit of bitterness towards the back.
    • Finish
      81 81
The finish is rather short, when the reheating and tingling are over, the malt is also gone. You can find some liquorice, possibly also a few dry herbs.

    —— blind cost ——
    • Nose
      86 86
Full, sweet and nicely spicy, yellow fruits, some citrus, honey, maybe a little waxy. At the beginning, a little alcohol stings - but this goes away in the glass over time. Otherwise, the smell hardly changes over time.
    • Taste
      84 84
Oily, and also slightly watery, quite spicy, subtle sweetness, fruit notes I can not define, over time it gets fuller in the mouth.
    • Finish
      86 86
Impressively powerful and quite long. Oily, spicy wood, some salt (?), Slight bitter notes, maybe soap (lavender?), Cocoa, then drying slightly.

    • Nose

At first surprisingly bright and fresh. Sweet bright honey. Some fresh citrus fruits. Behind it comes out but then an old dusty spine. It gets oily and shows some waxy notes and sweet caramel. Exciting nose.
    • Taste
      83 83
In the first impression rather light and mild. But on the tongue he shows his age with a strong malt note and dark chocolate. Elegant bitterness and dry oak on the palate.
    • Finish
      81 81
Rather mild and medium in length. Dark chocolate stays behind

  11. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

Sweet, malty, mashy, woody, something from the multivitamin effervescent tablets in the nose. In the mouth relatively alcoholic, spicy. The finish a bit harsh from the wood, bittersweet. It's OK.

  12. ctu scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

Despite 21 years and 43%, it's wild. Slowly maturing type?!
    • Nose
Sweet fruits, apple, honey, raisin, pepper and ginger. Bit of oily walnut.
Much containing with air there is a touch of mint.
    • Taste
Powerful. More oak, spice and oil than in the nose. Lot of fruits. Cheese.
    • Finish
      Medium length, oaky, spicy.

[September, 2014]  Together with friends I emptied a bottle that I bought for 57 Euro in September, 2014.

    In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 85.  My notes state it is easy to drink and quite delicious but a little simple.

  14. Marko_I did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

Hui, quite decent board, so I had the or the some Knockando 21, which I know, not in memory. The here is in its woody expression very interesting and peculiar, but certainly not for everyone, no cozy 21er Gaumenschmeichler, but in itself is the Master Reserve with about 65 ¬ today 'a very good price house number.
    • Nose
sweet with a tiny dusty note, raisins, honey, a touch of ginger (but only the aroma, not the sharpness), after a while a light sour note towards mead / cider
    • Taste
For 21 years very strong and spicy, wood, pepper, a harsh forest honey note, some walnut, resin, quite different, than the nose can expect
    • Finish
medium to long, the oak fires well, pepper, bitter, camillan, walnut

quite disappointing for a whisky of its age apart from the price; certainly not bad, but also for simple drinking there is better and cheaper
    • Nose
fresh and light, soft fruit, roasted aromas
    • Taste
some wood, walnut, a hint of cocoa or chocolate, soft, not so complex
    • Finish
      Medium to long, but simple

Accessible whisky. the taste is a 'minty-like' note. (described as eucalyptus.) Coppery taste, caramel. toffee. Interesting to hear that this whisky is in the coldest place in the warehouse to get a 'slow maturation'. Tasted during NaT in Wijchen.

  24. rottendon scored this whisky 79 points Connoisseur

aja, for a 21 year old rather disappointing. Good, he is also very cheap. Whether I personally consider him cheap, I'm not so sure. The 18 year old I liked better. He flattened especially with increasing temperature, unfamiliar. Just made the counter sample again, directly from the bottle, the aroma is back. Does not tolerate heat! Warm benevolent 75 cool from the bottle quite well worth 83. Averaged rating.
    • Nose
Distinct sherry, overripe grapes, raisins and dates. Vanilla and honey. When heated, there is a distinct note of fermented apple that dominates, the sherry notes are gone.
    • Taste
Strong pepper, honey, also clear alcohol. Strong salivation. Creamy yet surprisingly dry. Some oak tannins are also present, with the vanilla of the aroma and the lack of bitterness in the taste of many Bourbon barrels.
    • Finish
While the alcohol and tannins fade, a nutty creaminess remains. Overall, rather short.
