  1. Imp scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Nose: fresh and elegant, apples, currants, red berries (dogrose), salt, rasins, hint of peat.

Taste: delicious, honey and nuts, spices and wood, chocolate and cream.

Finish: long one developing on salt, sour red berries, nuts, oak and spices.

Overall: perfect balance and development, the only fault feature is quick fading of the nose, after 30 min it melts away significantly. Though when it's just poured it gives you real pleasure. If it lasted longer the score would have been 89/100 at least.

    Score = 21.5 22.5 22 22, 88/100!

    Heavy for Japanese whisky
Not leaning towards fresh nor citrus but deep and rich

    Coffeee chicolate

    Good for its retail

I taste this malt during my trip to Japan in September 2019, together with a Yoichi Manzanilla Wood Finish bottled 2018, at the Cordon Noir in Kyoto
    • Nose
Even more intense than Manzanilla, lots of good fruit and wood that comes from aging
    • Taste
Good fruit, not very sweet, slightly spicy, no peat
    • Finish
      Long

Do not find it any better than its younger counterpart, which I would rather grab at prices then.
    • Nose
Plum, raisin, dark honey, walnut, hazelnut, noticeable oak, good corner more than the 10s / 12s, the light smoke is also back, green apple in between and peach
    • Taste
Red apple, plum, raisin, chest of drawers, all sorts of nuts, cocoa, thyme, oregano, very dry and herbaceous, previously lit kitchen herbs, some burnt gum, flamed orange
    • Finish
Medium long, the oak, dry apple slices, raisin and nuts

    Mizunara
Well, what have we here (say this in the Lando Calrissian voice, please): a Yoichi 15 Year Old. Let me dust off the sample bottle and pour this baby. It has become almost unaffordable at this point (if you can find a bottle, that is), so allow me to take my time for this. It was taken off the shelves some two years ago and it does not look like it will return inside a decade.
Waxy and fruity nose on apricots, peach and yellow plums. Hint of incense, marshmallow and lots of vanilla and nuts. Freshly cut Granny Smith keeps it quite fresh. Young, green twigs. Mizunara wood. Very nice.
The body is very light, which is a bit disappointing. Lots of citrus on the palate, joined by something milky. Pretty sharp at first sip, but quickly becomes a lot more delicate. Clear presence of peat. Oriental spices from the wood.
The finish is medium long and brings out more of the fruitiness.
A very accessible, lovely Japanese whisky. But the new NAS-releases (especially the ones on sherry) are no less good in taste or intensity – au contraire.

  10. Alex Fridays scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Old leather, furniture polish, chocolate, allspices, christmas cake, sweet fruits, light creosote, coffee and cream notes on nose.

Creosote, peated smoke, spices, oak cask, chocolate, coffee, green apples, dried fruits notes on palate.

Spices, vanilla, coffee, green apples, light creosote, dryness, floral, green tea notes on long finish.

  11. Dram Dracula scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

Just a few years ago, the Yoichi 15 and the Yamazaki 18 were readily available on shelves here in US. Ahh... those were the days. Anyways, I've always enjoyed the less expensive Yoichi 15 more than the Yamazaki 18. I find there is more depth and complexity to the Yoichi along with a nice subtle peat that the Yamazaki lacks.

  12. Calmar scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

Very soft and calm whisky, but at the same time can not be called smoothed, there is in it both the depth and character. A worthy representative of the country of the rising sun, with its softness and delicacy reminiscent of Isle of Jura.
    • Nose
The first nose - a little smoke, bourbon, wet stone, then light lacquer-acetone notes, dried fruits and all this against the background of a freshly broken green apple.
    • Taste
Soft taste of wood, citrus freshness, sweetness, spices, everything is very delicate and soft, light smoke and peat.
    • Finish
Continuation of taste, fading spices and spices on the background of wood, at the end - light echoes of fruit compote, puree from vegetables, peat.

A thoroughbred, slightly smoky malt. Too bad that these former standards are so hard to come by. Three years ago, it was still in all convenience stores ...
    • Nose
Very slight smoky note, first. Since the 10-year-old was more violent. There are also beautiful woody aromas, spices, cloves, grapes.
    • Taste
Very light and pleasant in the taste. The oak outweighs.

It will have taken me some time to be convinced, but yes, it's a good dram!
    Enthusiasm 4/5
    • Nose
Light peat and melted in a delicate and floral freshness. Malt and hazelnut. More and more same.
    • Taste
Well spiced with malty sweetness. It grows with each sip.
    • Finish
Pretty imposing with a note of smoke.

  16. Donwaldorf scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

A beautiful nose ... we could smell it for hours without getting bored. The rest is more consensual and without any real surprise, but it is very precise. We will appreciate (or not!) This little persistent smoke throughout the tasting.
    • Nose
The first notes are clearly on the fruit whether it is exotic fruits with papaya, banana or fruit more unusual as peach or apricot. Some vanilla notes intertwine with this "fruit dance". After a few minutes of aeration the fruits gradually give way to almond paste and varnish, all covered with smoke that was difficult to perceive at first.
    • Taste
A light mouth that remains very conventional on spices, wood, chocolate ... behind this smoke that passes through time without dispersing. There are some vegetal and menthol notes on the finish
    • Finish
A rather long and pleasant finish on chocolate and spices. There is this strange smoke that lingers in the mouth and does not leave indifferent.

Light to medium-bodied. Would IMO have benefited from more cask time, but I find it a very good example of a very "Scottish-like" Japanese whisky and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone who enjoy especially the Scottish Island whiskies!
    • Nose
Old wooden boards, fruity and syrupy malt, some smoke, cantaloupes/melon, salty liquorice, a whiff of vanilla, some flowery notes, cream, a nice balanced herbal touch and a faint, but noticeable trace of sherried spices.
    • Taste
Cream, sweet toffee, vanilla, candied pears, a soft sense of sea (brine), honeyed sherry, a hint of lime and old wooden oak boards intermingled with some pleasant leathery tones. Quite elemental.
    • Finish
Quite a long finish: Old oak, some smoke (more present towards the very end), vanilla, unburnt peat, gentle wooden spices with a hint of sherry, some soft (pleasant) bitterness at the end, a hint of lime and perhaps a tad of Talisker-like pepper.

The nose is ok and the finish reasonable but the rest is rubbish. I will have to try this again I feel.

Just tried a Glendronach 21 Parlaiment after this, there is nothing wrong with my palate after all. The Glendronach was good, this Yoichi is rubbish.

This tastes too manufactured to me, I know I will be in the minority but its like a mediocre blend.

If I tasted this blind I would guess it cost no more than £20.

The price this costs its a joke to be honest.

I am going to try something else, perhaps my palate is having an off night?
    • Nose
Fruity sherry, raspberry and blackcurrant, dark treacle , wet leather and a few meat notes.
    • Taste
Yuk, that's bitter and dry. Insipid, surely my palate is at fault here???

It has some depth with a pleasant feeling at the back of the palate but no taste to speak of.

Weak, there is some sherry, biscuit and caramel but nothing else.
    • Finish
Quite short but right at the end a pleasant caramel taste.

Better than Taketsuru. The Yoichi is the most Scottish of all the Japanese. Good mature, full of flavor, but I miss the elegance of the top Japanese. Slightly salty note without being overly salty or smoky. On Neudeutsch: Have salt like road in winter, and on pommes. Comes expensive and mer, because no mer broduzire.

  23. Egge scored this whisky 83 points Expert Junior

    • Nose
A little salt, sweet apricots, honey. Discreetly baked almonds. Dried fruit.
    • Taste
Salty, the alcohol is strong. Spices and minimal fruit.
    • Finish
The finish could be longer. Some sweetness remains, as well as a slight spicy note.

  24. Rom did not rate this whisky Expert Junior

Feminine, floral and fruity nose with a slight smoke at the bottom. Attack sweet then tannins are present. The final is on alcohol and nuts, good no more.

  25. hartist scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

A Scottish soul and Japanese exoticism as a bonus.
    • Nose
Fee and end. Refined flavors of fresh fruits (peaches), oleaginous fruits (hazelnuts, nuts), a little citrus. Original puffs of spring floral bouquet with a touch of dried mint.
    • Taste
Mouth rather oily and alert. Notes of stewed fruit (apricots, peaches, melons) elegantly spicy (pepper, clove), a little salty and glazed with tobacco chips chocolate (it exists!). Background on vegetal and floral notes concealing a touch of clear smoke.
    • Finish
Rather long and complex, it concludes the mouth on notes more chocolate, "cappuccinated" and citrus.

  26. Akoo scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

An enchanting nose, but a final dram a little unbalanced. The mouth is quite surprising compared to the nose. The spicy / woody side takes over in the second part of the mouth. This is still a good dram.
    • Nose
First scents very sweet and refined. It is very melted and delicate. Almost captivating. Notes of apricot as I rarely felt in a whisky. It seems very sweet, with peach syrup, vanilla, caramel and honey in particular. A very springtime whisky. There is also a certain freshness, with mint, a hint of lemon. And, as if that was not enough, with a little opening, the profile takes a completely different direction, with notes of cashews, hazelnut, cereals and smoke. A nice nose, complex and very pleasant.
    • Taste
It's quite light, much less exuberant than the nose. It's sweet: vanilla, caramel, raisins, but especially spicier than the nose. There is a touch of pepper, a little cinnamon, salt and always a slight smoke. Nuts such as pecan and hazelnut also present. We still feel the wood that makes the whole a bit harsh. This remains pleasant.
    • Finish
Long and hot, with lots of spices, dried fruits and wood.

very complex- a hint of smoke, nice sweetness, apricots, honey, oak, spices, ginger candied fruits - for a 15 Y old Whisky a lot to experience. It changes its character with every dram.

Five more years did not bring him anything compared to 10 years of age. It's always lean, bitter, simple and uninteresting. All of these entry-level Japanese whiskys are at the same level as the F & Fs of the early 2000s.

It's in that good but not great category for me. A better finish might have lifted it 2 or 3 more points.
    • Taste
A bit salty to start, maybe too much, but it does get more mild. It has a very warm and creamy mouthfeel. It is bottled at 45 per cent abv, but it tastes like it should be above 50. There is also plenty of spiciness.
    • Finish
A medium finish with again the tiniest bit smoke. Not the best of finishes.

Nuts, reasonably waxy too, I get notes of citrus fruit, vanilla and caramel.
    • Taste
Red fruits, caramel, spices, then some licorice, slightly tingling on the tongue (soft pepper)
    • Finish
Medium long, the taste slowly disappears to a dry, light bitterness.

Lack of scale and complexity, however
    • Nose
      Fruity, floral, solvent, almonds
    • Taste
      Fruity, very light peat
    • Finish
      long enough

  36. totalatool did not rate this whisky Expert Junior

Tasted blind. I liked the nose much better than the taste, which lacked the balanced fruitiness of the nose.

I assume this was bottled in 2012/2013.
    • Nose
Quite a nice nose, with leather, spices and wood underpinned by fruit. There is an initial note of glue or varnish, which wears off after a while.
    • Taste
Fairly subtle arrival, but that changes rather quickly to become much more aggressive, woody and bitter. It actually made me think the abv was higher than it turned out to be. I had trouble detecting the fruitiness that was clearly there on the nose.
    • Finish
Quite long, spicy wood, slightly bitter.

  37. KayMeertens scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

    Needs some
    time to get my appreciation.

    Blind tasting.
    • Nose

      A fruity
nose with peach, apple, citrus and plum. Also vanilla, wax, nutty oak and
marshmallows. Quite spicy as well and a little bit of smoke. Unfortunately also
a layer of glue that needs some time to wear off. Not as dominant as in the Yamazakis I've tried, but still a pity.
    • Taste

      The initial
mouth feel is quite aggressive and a bit sour, which I would not expect for its
age and not too high ABV. It really needs time and perhaps a drop of water
before more fruitiness (peach, plum) surfaces. The spiciness of the oak is present all along though.
    • Finish
      Fruity
and spicy with a whiff of smoke.

N: liquorice, spices, herbs, grains - whole meal bread, bourbon, some qlue, creamy - advocaat, later raisins, vanilla, sugared walnuts and pepper
T: pepper, orange, bitter, salve - ointment, later bitter and some spices and herbs
F: spices, wood tones and later floral

TASTING NOTE LMDW: Color: amber with pink and copper highlights. Nose: fresh and sweet, it is marked by subtle fruit notes (white peach skin) against a background of oily peat. With aeration, it reveals a very beautiful softness in which are mingled notes of dried fruits (pecan nuts), varnish and dry herbs (hay, tobacco leaf). Palate: unctuous and oily, it evokes precise sweet-salty notes (barley sugar, iodine) .Smooth, it develops on flowers, anise mint, spices (clove, pepper) and chocolate . Final: elegant, it evolves on chocolate (bitter chocolate, mocha), coffee and citrus fruits (orange). It is prolonged, by retro-olfaction, on notes of fresh fruit (white peach).

    Complex and of high quality.
    • Nose
at first some varnish, strong tobacco, peat smoke, ash, then fruity, mustard, quite dry. Changing all the time.Complex.
    • Taste
earthy, malty, oaky (but not too intrusive), good balance. Tastes more 'Japanese' (special kind of oak) than the nose suggests. Wood smoke. Half sweet, half dry.
    • Finish
Dry and spicy with a nice fruity sourness. Later some chocolate.
