Whisky Reviews for Clynelish 1996 AD

5 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 87.18 points

  1. Calmar scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

Concentrated sweet Clynelish, dense, rich, summer - all aroma characteristic for distillery are harmoniously mixed together, seasoned with a good fortress and ready to give a lot of pleasure to the tasting.
    • Nose
Warm, open, flower-mineral, wax notes, honey-confectionery tones, lemonade, lemon peel, a little carpentry workshop in the background - varnish, window putty, freshly scoured wood; a wet grindstone, oiled steel tools, a little malt.
    • Taste
Sweet, honey-herbal, floral, very dense, powerful pepper wave, pastry tones, lots of citrus fruit, exotic fruits, a little spicy oak in the background.
    • Finish
Sweet, ginger-orange, lollipops, creamy notes, lemonade, fruit confiture, candied fruit from exotic fruits, light butteriness, herbal notes, very dense and saturated.

Becomes more balanced with a few drops of water. Tasted 19/11/2015.
    • Nose
The first whiff reminds me of Revell paint tins, but then it's fruit galore! Some banana, pear, and something berry-ish. With a few drops of water the citrussy tones focus in on the orange, but somehow I also get some faint smell of cigars.
    • Taste
Very creamy mouthfeel; a mix of fruit (banana and citrus) and spiciness - a lot! With water the spiciness is toned down a bit and makes it more balanced.
    • Finish
Spiciness slowly dissipates in the finish, and the fruit lingers on for a while, with some caramelic sweetness as well.

Not too complex, but the flavour profile is really appealing, and the balance is also good. I like this.
    • Nose
Wow, this is fruity! Apple, pineapple and banana, with a hint of lime. Some minerals (wet rock) in the background.
    • Taste
Creamy and waxy with some chalk, but mainly fruit. Banana and lemon at the forefront. There some vanilla in the background, and it also has a spicy edge.
    • Finish
Some caramel, vanilla and yellow fruit.

  5. KayMeertens scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

I like the profile, especially of the bourbon-influenced nose, but it's not very complex and pretty overpriced.
    • Nose
Banana juice. Baked banana as well. Pear, creamy vanilla, lime and a little strawberry, but also a tingling edge like chili pepper. With water that disappears and gives way to orange and a little caramel.
    • Taste
Again a mix of creamy and spicy. Banana, pear, caramel sauce, vanilla, lime, orange and pepper. With water more orange.
    • Finish
Caramel, banana, vanilla, pear, orange and chestnut. The spiciness doesn't stick in the finish.
