Very enjoyable whisky, whose flavours certainly demand time to truly open up. Given the addition of a bit of water I would describe this whisky as smooth yet complex and quite rewarding.
    • Nose
      1. Without adding water but 30min in glass: fresh fruit, green apple particularly, some vanilla, cinnamon, bitter as in fresh walnuts.

      2. With the addition of water: Nose gets a lot softer, honey becomes more apparent, perhaps even toffee
    • Taste
      1. Without adding water: rather stringent and sharp, perhaps even a tiny bit overwhelming. Strong bodied and peppery. Green apple is again noticeable. Overall a rather floral and spicy mix of flavours

      2. With the addition of water: Taste is immediately a lot softer, even though I didn't add a lot of water. Due to the lack of the alcoholic punch, a range of pleasant tastes get a lot more prominent, such as the green apple, fresh fruit and now also the sweetness of honey. As someone wrote here, soft but yet complex at the same time
    • Finish
After about 15-30 seconds a very subtle hint of smoke or dried leather becomes discernible. In a way very similar to the finish of a decent cigar.

A delicious malt. There's still some life in the whisky. This is not disturbing, but makes it interesting.
    • Nose
Quittengelee. Yellow Gooseberry. Peach ice tea. bergamot oil. rose water. wood sugar. malt sweetness. Minimal wood stain. Removes nutmeg. Some white pepper and wood spice. After the first sip, the nose tends to get a little darker.
    • Taste
Nice honey sweetness. Glucose. Overripe pears. Orange jam. Then it tingles pleasantly and the oak sets in. There is a certain sharpness, but it is not unpleasant. Then cocoa.
    • Finish
grape seeds. Bit of chocolate with tart cherry bits.

    Ralfy review 446: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-A6zCXh_ok (87/100).

"It reminds me of another whisky... slightly bitter malt that takes a while for the, you know, you get the cask interference and you kind of... it's a bit off-putting and then it settles down. And I was wondering what it was and I realized that is Bushmills."

On the nose, woody, with coffee (persistent this time, subtle sherry, chocolate, spices and fruits (cooked apples) .In the mouth, feeling of maturity but also ... alcohol! With water, the nose chocolate is maintains, but all the rest loses power, the volume of aromas becomes super low! In the mouth, it is honey and spices that stand out, while the alcohol is still present! It is clearly above the 14 years, but the flaws are the same! Enthusiasm 2/5

    • Nose
Cocco. Molto piacevole.
    • Taste
P: molto coerente, molto buono. Ancora brioscia maltosa e mielosa. Buono! Frutta cotta (sempre mele e prugne). Un velo di spezie (cannella).
    • Finish
F: piuttosto lungo, molto coerente: frutta cotta, marzapane e arancia rossa multiforme.

Lovely Arran that bursts with spices and is therefore a little less fruity than we are used to from this house. A touch too dry on the finish in my book. I do not think it is logical that you pine for a glass of water after a dram.
    • Nose
Great nose on candied fruit and brown sugar, green apples, blood oranges, a hint of pear drops, banana peel and honey. Soft on the spices with both pepper and aniseed and a hint of oak. It’s a bit old school, which I quite fancy.
    • Taste
The arrival is very austere and creamy and sherried. Loads of spices with ginger, aniseed, cloves, soft pepper and a hint of cinnamon. Then the fruit kicks in, translated into loads of citrus – orange peel included – red berries and some chewing tobacco. It even turns a bit sweet and sour, but in a way that works.
    • Finish
In the long finish, it turns very dry on liquorice, orange liqueur and again aniseed.

Much better than the 16, pleasant, tasty and highly recommended ....

(Head to head tasting between 16.17 and 18)
    • Nose
Darker, more sherry notes, blood orange, raisins, light floral with honey.
    • Taste
Warming, lubricating, sweet (honey), beautiful complex. do not show excessive violent sherry.
    • Finish
Medium length, as with the 16, the wood tones now appear, with a pleasant spiciness (ginger, cloves, cardamom) and a little liquorice.

soft yet complex and elegant, surprisingly
good except for the distracting spiciness
    • Nose
      rich floral bouquet, light honey,
heather, grain, light fruits, elegant sherry
    • Taste
      wood sweetness, light fruits,
dry and really spicy, orange zest
    • Finish
      medium, light caramel sweetness,
light fruits, orange peel, light marzipan/cake, chinese
wedding floral tea at the back

    Nose:-
Soft fresh sour fruit with rich barley. Complex and diversified, a
masculine version of Arran with heavy wood influence, a class and taste
of its own. Lightly heated with airy paper fragrant. Palate:- Very dry mouthfeel, rooty and hot young ginger. Vibrant,
complex and unbendable. Water bring out more wood character. A dram that
demand attention and make you think. I would say it is acquired taste,
but I think I love it.

Finish:- Burst of spices just before
finish and hang on the back of palate, the gently warms add attribute to
the medium-long length finish. Dryness remains.

Tasted 22/01/2016 in an Arran line-up.
    • Nose
Sherried as well like the 16yo Pure by Nature, but this one smells fresher, with more light fruit (green apples) than the 16yo, which smells "darker".
    • Taste
Same as the 16yo (creamy, sherried whisky. Dark fruit (red berries), nutmeg, cloves, orange zests - which gives it a bit of a soury edge), but it seems sweeter (bit of butterscotch).
    • Finish
Medium to long, warm, sweet with hints of aniseed.

    Blindtasting from the Easterwomen.
    Tip: Higlands,> 12yo, 46% Sherry Keg
So bad was the tip not at all.
    • Nose
First something burns in the nose, then dried fruits, flowers, a bit of hay, spice and malt
    • Taste
Soft, dry fruits, raisins, plums, oak definitely a sherry barrel
    • Finish
      Warmth, sweet and fruity

    Gets better every dram!
    • Nose
Fruity - exotic fruits and strawberries, orange and spices. Chocolate, almond paste, honey, popcorn, some glue en caramel.
    • Taste
Orange, some tannins, creamy fruity and dark chocolate. Some forest fruits - berries, iron, nuts - walnuts and mint.
    • Finish
Some bitter fruits, fruity - apple and citrus. A touch of sulpher and earthy notes - mushrooms.

A rich and complex dram, but lacking a little balance. Very nice, despite the lack of length in the final. Arran is still bringing us a nice whisky!
    • Nose
at first glance, sweet notes of varnish and candied oranges. Pretty complex and interesting. Honey, wood. Then, a sweet wave takes over with, as the main note, Queen-Claude. The fragrances are round and powerful.
    • Taste
lots of body, sugar, plum, orangettes (candied oranges and dark chocolate), spices, especially cinnamon. A very well made mouth, very rich. An explosion of flavors!
    • Finish
it is his weak point! Quite short on spices and yellow fruits, with a rather persistent note of metal.

Not your typical Arran but a really lovely dram, sweet fruits and soft spices with a lovely oakiness.
    • Nose
Juicy fruit gum. A definite dry oakiness. Peaches n' cream flavouring. Clementines, specifically the spray when peeling them. Cooked plums. Light cinnamon and allspice. Fermented apples. A slight raisiny/curranty note.
    • Taste
Quite dry. Very woody. Apricots. Coconut shavings. Hard cider. A nice floral note (there you are Arran signature!). Red fruits. Bitter citrus. Plum pudding. Jaffa cake. Milk chocolate. Very soft but prominent spices, allspice, cloves, cinnamon.
    • Finish
Medium-long. Dry wood, bitter and sweet fruits. Orange drops and a slight hint of anise. Slight hint of mocha.

Nose: A lovely sweet entry with soft vanilla, orchard fruit, a bit of candied citrus (mostly orange, but some tangerine too) , honey and golden syrup add more sweet sensations, and then some spices, and a touch of appetizing wood, deep but crisp at the same time. A superb nose in my book. Excellent start.

Palate: Starts sweet, with a peppery tang, then some vanilla and coconut goodness with a dash of spices on top of chocolate and candied ginger dipped in honey, and a distant smoky note.

Finish: Spiced chocolate, hint of smoke, sugar and dried apricot.

One year short of 18, and Arran has really come of age. Sohpisticated, classy, layerd and complex. A pleasure, and a celebration for the taste buds. One step at a time Arran whisky is becoming one of the better malts on the market right now at this age and price point. Period. The best Arran to date. 90’s. Cant wait for next year’s release. Really can’t.

Only 9,000 bottles of this nectar, so be quick!

A wonderful whisky. Would always give him preference over the 18-year-olds of Tomatin, The Glenlivet and Aberlour (which I've tasted lately).
    • Nose
Full but not intrusive. Sherry clearly noticeable, but also sweet, caramel and honey. Juicy bitter orange. Light oak bitterness in the background. Every nose move is different.
    • Taste
To the impressions of the nose join very clearly ripe, juicy cherries. Beautiful spiciness. Alcohol is noticeable but not disturbing.
    • Finish
Medium long to long with pleasant dryness and slightly pleasant bitterness. The cherries continue to be noticeable.
