Whisky Reviews for Kilbeggan 1946

2 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 85.75 points

  1. MaltMartin scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Whiskey from the last known cask of Kilbeggan Distillery aka Brusna or Locke's which ceased its activities in 1957. Kilbeggan distillery is unique in Ireland in that it is the only distillery to have reopened (in 2007) after a long period of closure. One of the two pot stills that is being used at Kilbeggan Distillery was made in the early 1800s and is the oldest working pot still producing whisk(e)y in the world today. It was once used in Old Tullamore Distillery, which also closed in the 1950's.
    • Nose
The first associations are of old books in a library and dusty furniture. Mustiness. Oranges and tangerines as well. Hints of sherry and toffee at the background. Slightly woody, but some floral notes as well. Gentle but very fragile.
    • Taste
Soft buttery oakiness mixed with orange marmelade. Roasted chestnuts. Dried fruits of figs and dates. Lemon zest. Later on more on vanilla, honey and cream toffee (Werthers Original sweets).
    • Finish
Not that long. Cinnamon. A bit ginger and liquorice.

  2. WhiskyLovingPianist scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

The last known cask from this Irish distillery before it ceased its activity in 1958, although distilling may have stopped as early as 1954 Wm.
N: Oaked shoe polish. Some tomato, coconut, sherbet and sugared veg - Chinese style. Some seaside notes also.
    T: Rugged.
F: Some lip smacking extracts the oily maltiness. More iodine within this dense herbal-oaked-malt brew.
C: A taste of Irish history from a distillery recently reopened after 50 years of closure.
