Whisky Reviews for Willowbank 15-year-old DoubleWood NZWC

3 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 82.25 points

  1. ColdAesthetics scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

A very nice, very easy to drink thing, I miss a little the red wine note, in the end, unfortunately, only a more expensive replacement for a good bourbon.
    • Nose
I have to join the previous speaker, acts as a high-quality bourbon with Portfassnachlagerung as there are some. Very sweet but also aromatic, overflowing caramel, light glue note, orange marmalade, a few red grapes in between, leather, vanilla, brown sugar
    • Taste
Pickled fruit, apricot, peach, yellow apple, sweet malt, light oak bark, peanut in between, vanilla, honey, caramel, some bread crumb also, sweetener, something mentholiges behind, but positively refreshing
    • Finish
Short to medium, sweet malt and honey remain, a few grapes now probably. in between, but more bright than red, dry-malty

Nose: Oh, a bourbon? Molasses, honey, chocolate, rum, cherries, glue and gum. In addition, slightly fruity aromas of orange purée and bitter orange as well as cardboard, dusty newsprint, furniture polish, leather and floor wax. After some time in the glass, the rubber is unfortunately very dominant.
Taste: Very sweet and dry-tart starting. Immediately the honey sweetness is present, but also the woody aromas. Sugar, sweetener and orange accompany a minty freshness. To the finish increasingly strong notes of oak and stain.
Finish: Quite long (for 40%) with bitter notes of wood, whole milk chocolate, espresso / mocha and sweet honey. All in all, it looks a bit contrived.
Comment: Very strange, but also interesting! After the wood notes have faded, the best that the whiskey has to offer comes to light.
    80 points (nose: 81 / taste: 76 / finish: 83)

Made from 70% Single Malt and 30% premium grain spirit.
Launched in 2011, the acclaimed DoubleWood heralded
the revival of New Zealand’s Whisky Industry. Its first 6 years of
ageing was in American Bourbon barrels, before finishing in French Oak
NZ wine barrels, giving ruby colour,  depth of character and
    long-lasting, rich flavours.

“Delicate fruit and floral notes over a delicious hint of toffee and sweet offerings”

World Whisky Awards 2013: GOLD - Best Australasian Blended Whisky
San Fransico Spirit Awards 2013: SILVER
