Old Tomatin, it is always a great
    adventure.
    • Nose
Oh, a tropical fruit bomb on the
nose. Passion fruit, kiwi, mango, melon, banana, you name it! And while I have
tried more fruity Tomatin (1976, anyone?), this is very succulent and creamy.
Smells like a rich compote. A bit of rhubarb in the mix, sprinkled with
      cinnamon. Some chocolate. Delicious!
    • Taste
Creamy on the palate as well.
Wonderfully fruity (all of the above), but now perfectly seasoned with all
kinds of woodspice. Think cinnamon, a soft pepper and a touch of nutmeg. Aniseed?
Some mint. Add some peach chutney that I keep in the fridge. Somewhat oriental.
      I think this is outstanding.
    • Finish
I would have liked the finish to be
somewhat longer, but I am not complaining. Becomes dry towards the end.

Tomatin 35 yo 1978 (46,5%, Cadenhead Small Batch for The Nectar 2014, hogshead, 216 btl.)

Nose: fruity. Hey, what did you expect? A slightly ‘greener’ fruitiness than most 1976’s though. A little more bubblegummy too, but really nice nonetheless. Oranges, stewed rhubarb and banana. Hints of yoghurt and quite some spearmint. A light, grassy oakiness. Aniseed. Oh wait, after some time it becomes even more aromatic, with some classic tangerines and pink grapefruit. Really good. Mouth: even more fruity. Bananas, tangerines, orange candy, pineapple. Hints of mango and strawberry candy. Rather sweet from the start, which makes this a great lemonade. Some candy sugar before it fades to pepper and cinnamon. An echo of the grassy notes as well, but no loud oak, nor any excessive dryness. Finish: long, slightly drying now but still pleasantly fruity and sweet.

Now that the legendary 1976’s are gone (?), this is probably the closest we can get to their profile. Slightly more bourbonny but overall a very similar, sweet fruit bomb character. Around € 270.

    • Nose
Without difficulty to detect, here is a beautiful package of fruits. At first glance, there are many fruity "chemical" flavors of confectionery. A lot of exotic fruits in shambles. After a while the nose evolves over more spices and wood (without being over-wooded). The nose is cleaner and more defined with nothing water. There are citrus fruits and overripe banana. A lot of floral notes too, like lilac, orange blossom. It looks like a Moroccan biscuit. I also found a trace of smoke. In short, it's fruity and complex.
    • Taste
Very fruity (ah good?) Clean, long, progressive and constant development in perfect equilibrium. Not demonstrative nor brutal, but vigorous and strong. The spices follow the fruity development, or rather form a hedge of honor with malt and fruit.
    • Finish
Long, slightly bitter and woody. Spicy and malty with a fruity reminder of the confectionery type. Vanilla.

A consistent and consistent whisky, very well done.
    • Nose
A fruit basket that perfumes: pear, peach, nectarine, mango, mandarin, banana. Vanilla honey. Very fresh and intoxicating. A high quality nose.
    • Taste
Honey and vanilla dominate. Yellow fruit jam. Mouth very well made but a bit monolithic.
    • Finish
Average final. Some sucracidulated citruses (yes I invent words :-p) make their appearance and attack the tongue and the palate.

    COLOR: light gold (bourbon barrel)

NOSE: flowery herb meadow, fruity, vanilla, pear compote, light caramel notes, sweet pipe tobacco.

TASTE: vanilla pods in fruit salad, cotton candy, pomaceous fruit (pear), beet syrup, floral grassy notes, freshly cut hay.

    Departure: light and medium length.

CONCLUSION: Good representative of this still. Just nice to wegschlabbern, but that is prevented by the ambitious price .....
