An honest and well done sherry.
    • Nose
      85 85
Honey, heather, wax, some wood spices, traces of varnish a little lively (fruit alcohol) that betrays youth, beautiful salty point and toffee in the background.
    • Taste
      85 85
Rather dry texture, moderately sweet, plum, milk chocolate, coffee, creamy caramel, then a younger finish, with a vegetal bitterness.
    • Finish
      83 83
Very short finish, wood spices, dark chocolate. A little below.

If you’re on your travels, the Balblair Vintage 2004 sherry matured bottling is a good buy. For around £50 you’ll receive a whole litre of this well-made, spiced sherry number. It’s not the most complex of whiskies, nor something you’d classify as an overt ‘sherry bomb’ but everything fits together nicely and the cask spice and astringency keeps things for turning overly sweet. You could do a lot worse than this whilst in an airport with time to kill.

    • Nose
Opening with rich toffee covered raisins and ginger nut biscuits. There’s demerara sugar and honey sweetness, but also some bitterness from liquorice and cask spicing.
    • Taste
Dried red berries (cranberries) are enhanced with some depth of dark chocolate, light furniture polish, cigar leaves and oak bitterness. There’s still a good dollop of honey here, amplified with pleasant vanilla. Spicing comes to the fore now and quite peppery
    • Finish
Medium in length, bitter and with some drying astringency – neither of which are overpowering.

  5. Calmar scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

A very pleasant young sherry mole, a beautiful dense honey-nut flavor, which continues its equally dense and thick taste, sweet, honey-confectionary and gently releasing the finish in which the sherry effect is more clearly manifested; youth makes itself felt by the sensation of a certain dampness, immaturity of the product and residual moonshine echoes, but on the whole came out a very worthy whisky for lovers of sweet.
    • Nose
Open, saturated, the first nose - green apples; then dry spicy wood, vanilla, honey-nut notes, nut halva, baklava, raisins, dried apricots, wood dust, a little lemon, light mineral notes, weak grains and moonshine shades.
    • Taste
Dense, oily, oak, grain, malt, moonshine, bitter young bark, walnuts in honey, baklava, Turkish sweets.
    • Finish
Soft, honey with oak bitterness, burnt biscuits, kvasnoe must, light beer bitterness.

I like it. A great, balanced sherry whisky. I would blindly tap a finish, so that ex-Bourbon barrels were used. Alternatively, a good portion of very squeezed sherry casks to bring out the fruity character of Balblair. But the batch still contains enough meaningful sherry casks.
    • Nose
First a dash of alcohol, but it disappears quite quickly. Then a strong spiciness, licorice, a hint of salt, before the sherry aromas come to it. Toffee, rum raisins, but also lighter fruits and honey are added.
    • Taste
A strong tingle, then fruity components with honey, as well as sherry flavors, which also bring a certain spiciness and bitterness.
    • Finish
First sweet, a minimal touch of sulfur, then getting bitter, sherry barrel flavors, oak bitterness, a touch of cigar box
