A very nice surprise. Really a lovely dram.

Really nice. Honeysuckle, lemon oil, vanilla, toffee, apricot jam, icing sugar, a bit of hay. If anybody had poured me this and said it was a lowlands whisky they could have fooled me. As it opens up, a slight hint of smokey notes show up though, along with light roasted pinecones and light minty notes. Fruity, fresh, sweet. Very nice nose.

Good start. A little woolly on the pallet, nice and thick, very chewy. Starts off with a good dose of muscovado sugar sweetness, even some icing sugar, a good amount of barley and cereals, some toffee, really an old school style full of cereals and toffee. Some tiny oaky notes, a little bitterness from freshly cut grass, very light smoke. Really nice, very good balance. Second chew is fuller and brings very light notes of ginger and peppermint, sweet red apple, more smoke, definitely more toffee, even some hazelnut sweetness. A little bit of dried apricot. Slight notes of prune or plum jam. Light cigar or tobacco notes. Definitely not bad. Third chew is super fat and oily, very juicy and mouthwatering. Ginger and black pepper brings good spice, but also tons of barley, muscovado sugar, rich smoke. Really, really nice. I can't believe I never tasted this one before.

Sweetness comes down first, and we're left with something slightly drier, still a good dose of smoke, ginger, definitely more oak, smokey, bitter wood, but there is luckily still some sweetness to balance things out, like a peppermint lollipop or something. Smooth and very nice.

    Style: Sweet and Complex

    Nose:

Soothing, aromatic notes of fresh apples, honeydew and apricots, heather honey dripping lightly onto pine cones. Red fruits, a delicate but vibrant floral core builds up with a gentle, smoky kiss. Mmmm, all the signs of a good Highland Park... Lemon peel and peppermint edges, which is rounded off with stewed tropical fruits and marzipan, mineral and maritime signatures to give an extra depth. Very nice.

    Palate:

What a lustrous and silky entrance, honeyed stone fruits, citrus, lavender and tobacco leaves knitting nicely together. More heather honey, tropical fruits sitting on top of molten dark-milk chocolate. Pine and green herbs honing the spicy edge, then we have wood shavings, malt biscuits all underlined with a coastal, tarry peat.

    Finish:

The tone sinks deeper - chocolate milkshake, Mocha, McVitie's, more tobacco leaves and finish with subtle hints of tropical fruits.

    Thoughts:

Wow, what a dram, it has been a while but I am still impressed by the magnitude of this whisky. Effortless texture, vibrant vibe and immensely complex, all arranged in such a harmonic and coherent way. Excellent stuff, certainly the best of the Valhalla series by a mile.

Loki the Norse god was a shape shifter, and so is this whisky. Very suitable name for this bottling.
    • Nose
Very rich, intriguing and almost mysterious nose.

There's some tobacco, something from a stable or farmhouse. Underlying sweeter notes.

Rather complex and hard to pin.
    • Taste
      Again rather complex and changing.

Citric, light and sweet, and yet it's also heavy, herbal, farmy.
    • Finish
Finish is long, changing with lots of uncommon combinations, salt, leather, tobacco, honey, citrus.

Loki is a high end whisky from Highland park. The price at launch day was approximately €175 and is rather high for a 15yo cask strength. This is a bit out of my regular bottle budget. And yet this 'limited' edition sold surpisingly good. A lot of them will end up in collections, others will be opened, and rightly so.

Highland Park delivered a cracking whisky with Orkney characteristics. I'd love to see this whisky reincarnate as a permanent budget version (read: without the wooden frame and the over-the-top storytelling).
    • Nose
The nosing sets off with a light smokiness. The smoke is brought to balance by aromas of rock sugar syrup or golden syrup and orange marmalade. It even reminds me a bit of Cranachan, the classic Scottish dessert made with caramelised oat flakes and raspberries.
Giving it some time in the glass, this Highland Park releases more spicy flavours. Elixir d'Anvers (an old ladies drink with lots of herbal and spicy notes), anise, fennel and maze.

Oranges, mango and liquorice manifest themselves when adding some water.
    • Taste
The palate is deliciously creamy. Key lime pie with ginger and shortbread. A sandalwood cigar box with grain biscuits and ripe yellow apples. Did you know there's an apple cultivar named after Odin?

Water enhances again the fruity flavours. Yet these alternate constantly with pepper and cardamon. Just lovely how the flavours are constantly switching between sweet and spicy.
    • Finish
The finish is ridiculously long. Coconut charcoals and bananas with whipped cream and a splash of rum on the barbecue. Sweet notes of cinnamon, vanilla and orange rind. A dash of pepper and again lovely fresh notes. I'd say lemon grass.
